      Those guitars are a lot closer than I would have guessed. My plans of getting a 335 are getting 2nd thoughts of getting a better LP than the LP I currently have.

      then Gibson has to confuse everything with the Memphis ES Les Paul. And the 335 is a center block hollow body where the 330 is a hollow body. The ES Les Paul is a center block hollow body also. The stop tailpiece is a give away as it has to mounted into solid wood. All are great guitars just subtle differences.

    I've watched a ton of these les paul vs 335 and, if we take a step back and are honest with ourselves they sound virtually identical. I tried out a real nice heritage 335 the other day and was shocked at how much it sounds like my les paul.

      Since the hay the same pickups, it is very hard, if not impossible to distinguish them in a blind test. The logical conclusion is that this hollow is only a matter of aesthetics.

    Personally I own them both. With pedals I can get the 335 to sound so close to the Les Paul it is not funny. With the Les Paul I have not been able to get the warmth out of it to mimic the 335 regardless of pedals. On that note I am 6'5 I just look way cooler holding the 335. LOL

      I‘m 5‘11 thin guy played a Les Paul Custom exclusivly for 10 years. Sometimes I thought that it looks kind a small on me. Bought a Gibson 335 5years ago. I hardly play the LP anymore. 335 sounds unbelivable similar but also more alive. Its lighter comfortabe and does Not look like a Ukulele on me 🤣

    • @pharmerdavid1432
      @pharmerdavid1432 5 років тому +1

      Greg Koch is 6'7", so he asked Reverend to build his new telecaster shaped guitar slightly larger than usually, so it wouldn't look small when he held it. This is 2019, so this is a new thing for Reverend, who released the model this year. I'm not so big, and may opt for the smaller Casino Coupe or Epi ES-339.

      Déus Herbert-Noel just seems to me, the difference is so slight, after listening to either one in the context of a band or recording for a few minutes, you're not going to be aware of any difference. Look nice, though. Now, compare something like a tele to either of these, then you're gonna hear a distinct difference.

    Gotta be honest - unless it's super-clean on the amp, they're pretty much the same. I can see why guitarists like to play a 335 on stage for the visual presence but I do most of my playing sitting down and I love the small size of my Les Paul.

  • @Valveus

    I've just watched a few videos comparing LP's to 335's, and most comments on all the videos favored the '335 over the LP, and I did too. On the other hand, some people prefer the LP sound. I remember when a friend traded/sold his 1959 ES-335 (and Junior too I think), so he could get a 1957 LP. This was in the early 1970's, so the price for the 1957 goldie (his name for her) was a little over $500. He said the LP had better sustain, didn't feedback at high volume, and had more solid mids. He was blues/rock style, just beginning as Etta James guitarist and bandleader, which lasted for a long time. Now he plays for Paul McCartney - I told him he would be famous someday...!

    I think I'd like the Heritage best, but I've never even held an electric guitar in my hands. I'm just getting started with an old Ovation acoustic. For me though the clear winner is the videographer/post production editor. This video is an excellent method of comparing these two very similar sounding, but distinct, instruments. Professional video editing all the way.
    Thanks.

    I don't really fancy Marty's videos that much. But I do like the fact that he doesn't emulate others by shredding and showing his credentials throughout the videos. He takes his time to enjoy the tones that the instrument produces. And that's the most important thing.

    I'm fortunate enough to own both a Les Paul and a 339 (smaller version of a 335) and it's hard to pick between the two because they are both my babies. I purely base it on how I'm feeling, when I want some roof blowing rock/metal I switch to Les, when I'm feeling almost depressed, or happy or soulful I use the 339. I use one for blues/jazz and the other for rock but nonetheless, they are both extremely versatile.
    My honest opinion, get both.

  • @rogerlecocq794
    @rogerlecocq794 7 років тому

    Depends on the pickups. If they both wear "57 Classics lets say that the sound gets closer but most of the time they wear different pickups. All being the same it can come down to size and neck reach. A 335 feels very long necked compared to a Les Paul, so your physical size is going to influence what you're comfortable with. Being of small stature I favour the Les Paul.

    A nuance for selecting an electric guitar of any type is to play it unplugged before you play it plugged in. The one that sounds best unplugged will invariably sound best when it's plugged in because the pick-ups can only "pick up" what is already in the sonic spectrum of the instrument. If you try it, you will hear it.

    While I love them both, the clarity present in the 335 is just so perfect.
    It isn't quite as overwhelmingly bright nor does it lack low end and body thanks to its hollowbody, ironically enough.

  • @Deliquescentinsight

    In actual fact the 335 has a solid block of wood down the center on which the pickups are installed, so the 'hollow' parts are only wings-they don't actually resonate through the pickups-although they are a little more resonant acoustically. So there should not be a lot of difference between the Les Paul, and yet there is!

    • @SteveG123
      @SteveG123 7 років тому

      The block under the pick-ups eliminates unwanted feedback, which is key. The 330, for example, a look-alike & precursor, is hollow and will howl at high volume. The pick-ups in the 335 do grab some of the acoustic resonance tones which is why the 335 is naturally warmer than the Les Paul but could not be as crunchy. I guess that's why they invented pedals. :) I had a re-issue 1968 Gold Top with soapbars & that guitar - I miss it to this day.

    Les Paul has a better Rythem tone overall, plus with things like Fuzz, Distortion, and Drop Tunings like Drop D or Drop C#.
    335 is hands down the best for lead with a light Overdrive and is easily the best for things like Jazz and Blues, it honestly sounds fantastic when used as a lead Intrument.
    I prefer Les Paul in general just because of the genres I play, but I won't deny that the 335 is fantastic.

Everything about them, cleaner, airy tone and more piercing, I just think 335 have such a traditional sound but they embody more soul/personality. Les Pauls too dark for me, since I prefer clean tones. Even with the 335 distortion it has a unique differences.

    The 335 edges out theLes Paul but they both sound great!

    Marty i was wondering if you could do a little tutorial instruction thingy on how to properly sort out the intonation on an electric guitar?

    its a tie because both have humbucker pickups 👍 but the LP is made for rock and the hollow body for blues

    Love both guitars- feedback is an issue on hollow bodies that needs to be managed. Both can do rock and metal and blues.

    Hey guys for me it's the 335 at the moment saying that I've just got a gretsch electromatic so I'm kinda smitten with hollow bodies at the moment
    How about a basic guide to getting various tones out of a simple rig - nice cleans , blues etc.
    OR just keep doing what you're doing great channel!

    I'd say the semi hollow would be my first choice.

    you should do a hollow body, semi-hollow and solid body comparison.

    Marty, great video. Not being a professional I have a hard time justifying a purchase of either of these beauties. How about a gear video on comparing lower end guitars?
    Quick question about the guitar licks course I got for signing up for the news letter. Is each lick supposed to take up one measure?
    Thanks again for your optimism and the fun you bring to you lessons and videos.

    For your style of playing the semi hollow body is a good fit. Unless you need long sustains at high volume like a trash metal then either is cool.

      Yeah, I just think the hollow body guitars sound better and have more variety of sound and you can play literally anything if u ask me
