What i love from this album is that is so real and raw, yet so complex.. and you never could understand it if you don't now how it feels to have a broken heart. But if you ever felt heartbroken, then you know exactly what Justin is talking about in all his songs.
It hurts me to look at him and it hurts to listen to his songs. There is so much pain in his songs .. I understand him because our situations are similar. I seem to hear my heart's voice when I hear his songs .. The body lives but the soul is torn to pieces every day....
I discovered bon iver with this album and i was immediately hooked I wanted to learn more about the album and this video is just AMAZING, it's one of my favourites now Thank you for explaining the deep emotions within each song🙏
This is a beautifully made video - I love the clips from these great movies (many of my own favourites): Eternal Sunshine, CMBYN, Submarine (filmed near my hometown in Wales, UK), Revolutionary Road, Into the Wild - I didn’t recognise the other one - what is it? You know Skinny Love is actually written from the point of view of the girl in the relationship…so it’s like she is singing it to Justin - he is the skinny love. That’s what makes it such a deep, self-reflective song. Re:Stacks surely is beautiful…the last line is so strong. I’ve always liked “Everything that happens is from now on”…so simple but a hugely mature perspective on life, leaving the past behind and growing, getting stronger. If you haven’t travelled to Wisconsin I highly recommend it. Thanks for this video!
@@OuiamAkchar thank YOU for your videos - I also really love "These are the things i remember." - that is a truly beautiful and honest piece of filmmaking. Your voice is really spellbinding
This is amazing, you did a great job at describing this wonderful album, which is also my favorite album of all time ever since I discovered it when I was 15, and it’s been with me through the ups and downs of my life ever since, I know this album will still be my favorite no matter what, it’s like a warm hug from an old friend. Congrats for the video! It was truly one of the most beautiful things I have seen in life, thank you
My wife has adopted a lot of the music that I love, but Bon Iver is one that she just can't get on board for. With the falsetto style of singing and how vague a lot of his lyrics are, sometimes it's hard to make out what he's saying or discern the meaning of what he wrote. I don't disagree with her on that, but I also argue that it doesn't matter. His style of writing invokes these emotions deep inside of you in a way that I can't describe, nor have I felt from any other artist. Take, for example, the cover of Skinny Love that Birdy does. I'm not saying she's not a talented artist, she most definitely is... but when she covered Skinny Love, she was 14 years old. She sings and plays it perfectly adequately, but there is an immense weight of life experience, of pain and hardship, of gut-wrenching honesty to it when Justin sings it that she cannot possibly convey. And that is what draws me back to Bon Iver time and time again. Just as you said, "I wear my garment so it shows".... his music is just pure unfiltered honesty in a way that is more than the melody, the lyrics, or the chords. The totality of it makes you, as you said, feel what and where he was when he wrote it. It takes you there, even if you've never been there. No other artist has ever made me feel like that. In the same way that I can listen to Adagio for Strings by Samuel Barber and have it cut all the way to your bones, even though there are no words, if that makes any sense?
It makes perfect sense, he sings feelings more than meaning and that’s what makes his music so raw and « feelable », you feel what he’s trying to convey you don’t have to necessarily understand it exactly, my favorite kind of poetry is the kind that you feel even when you don’t understand either the context or the words ( just like Richard Siken’s poetry) It’s one of the many reasons why I think no other artist can compare to Justin Vernon lyrically, he has his own unique unfiltered style and when it hurts, it huuuuurts
Incredible analysis; this really made me realize so much more depth to the lyrics; considering your great insight, do you have any thoughts about the bonus track from this album? Its called Wisconsin and I think it was only a digital release, but it puzzles me to its meaning
Let me start by saying I am very flattered that you liked my insight, I think the song Wisconsin is about him retreating to Wisconsin (in the cabin specifically) after a lot of suffering (break up of his band, break up with Emma, and getting mononucleosis) He’s in a lot of pain and the future seems dark, the lyrics show his belief that suffering will always exist and he’ll always be nostalgic about the past (“every place I go I take another place with me”) and his disbelief in love, his doubt, best showcased in the line “who will you love? What’s love when you’ve hurt?” But as I said I don’t think that’s his permanent mindset, he’s just in a lot of pain and needs to get it out in writing in order to heal and be optimistic about love and life again
Using clips from Into the Wild really adds a lot to the songs, that story easily fits with what for emma represents. Really nice video! Hearing a lot more of the lyrics and what they mean add a lot more to this already perfect ablum. I always thought this album was more built of the music, but the lyrics mean just as much if not more.

Exactly !! He conveys feeling rather than meaning

Why is Unitarian Universalist Church of Philadelphia depicted here? Is that where Bon Iver debuted the Emma album?
Great video :)
