I always find the final line “your love will be safe with me” to refer to the next relationship, but more than that, to himself, and his willingness to finally accept and love himself.
But the fact that we all draw something different from his lyrics speaks to the masterpiece that this song is, and to the insufficiency of language to ever adequately express human experience and depth of emotion. By leaving the metaphors vague, he can express his emotion, without trampling the listener’s. Absolutely beautiful.

Or maybe it's like the narrator in this video says. "A part of me will always love you. Don't take your love back. Let me hold onto a piece of it. It will be safe with me. I'll hold onto it for you. You don't have to hold onto me." Kind of a thing.

yeh i took it like that as well, especially when you take skinny love into consideration and how it suggests the person after would get a pretty terrible version of himself, re stacks kinda ends on what you mentioned, that he was able to get over the negative feelings he felt before

    • @myguykaikai9215

I don’t think it has anything to do with the next relationship or loving himself. I think it means he’s going to continue to love her.
I don’t think we ever stop loving the people we’ve fallen in love with. The relationship might end, but that love is still there. Even if it’s just a faded memory of what it was.

I just wanted to point out that, while his relationship and band ending catalyzed this album, it's not as simple as being about his ex. He's said this in an interview, that it's more complex than than that, even describing 'Emma' as an inerasable pain, and not necessarily a specific person. So, while I agree with much of this interpretation, I just wanted to warn against simplifying Justin's work and motives too much, as nothing that he does can be so easily boiled down to a simple concept, and is usually multidimensional in beautifully intricate ways.

If you think about it, the whole album kind of evokes a hard night, kind of like a bad dream about a distant memory. Re:Stacks to me is like waking up in the morning. It does carry the heavy mood of the rest of the album, but makes it distant and unimportant. As if he walked out of the cabin at five in the morning after the whole nightmare that was the rest of the songs, and I swear I can see the first sunshine trying to make it through the morning mist and the pine trees. Re:Stacks is the closure, the understanding that life will never be the same, but even if you choose to drag those stacks, life goes on.

When I was in high school, I paralyzed my left arm for about 6 months. As a musician, I was completely devastated, especially because I never knew if I would make a full recovery and be able to play music again. In a time when my entire life was a frenzy, this song really helped carry me. As cheesy as it may sound, when he would sing "This is pouring rain, this is paralyzed" I felt like he was singing straight to me and really understood what I was going through when no one else did. It was like musical empathy from a man I had never met.

Amazing! I remember the very dark times when my relationship ended. I was seriously depressed, turned to alcohol to relieve my pain, but it made only things worse. And then I did something crazy. I bought flight tickets and travelled Patagonia - all alone for the first time ever. I remember sitting in a cosy cafe in Ushuaia, drinking hot chocolate, eating churros, having a great view on Beagle Channel. It was a sunny morning, I was about to start my big, solo adventure in the national park and the speakers in the cafe played "Re:Stacks". This was the first time I evered heard this song and I remember how uplifted I felt. Now I realized what was that. I felt hopeful. That was a moment when I was finally at peace with my breakup and started looking with anticipation into the future rather than constantly dwelling on the past. It's been over four years since that sunny morning in Ushuaia and I'm still starting each day listening to this song.

I’ve listened to it well over 100 times. It inspires me to pick up one of my acoustic guitars. This was already my style. I have a wonderful friend that is a classical pianist. She wanted me to send her some of my work, and I did. Soon after, she sent me this song. She was confirming my style of guitar. It gave me confidence to write and play and record dozens of songs that were previously not in my mind, but were in my heart and soul. So I give thanks for this piece.

It took me a little while to realize what Vernon was talking about when he sings of "twisting to the sun". In my opinion, here, he's using a metaphor to compare himself to a tree. Like how an old tree is twisted and mangled, Justin felt like he was dead in the rut he was stuck in. He "needed to replace" or leave the run down front yard with the fountain in it. His "love was down in a frozen ground" like roots in bad, lifeless soil. But I also think he was being self-referential here, because he had previously said he kept "throwing it down, two hundred at a time ", as in gambling. Perhaps he means that his reliance on his previous band and his girlfriend was all based on a gamble?
    Really beautiful language.

For many who have lost on this magnitude, two steps are taken forward and one back. The black crow, to me, represents that temptation to go back and try again; the loss does not make sense and it feels like if one would just try again, things would work out. But no... it is just an empty taunt, like so many times before.

For Emma, Forever Ago will forever be my favorite album. Nothing else I've ever heard has made me feel the way this entire album has, Skinny Love was the song that changed my life and stopped me making the biggest mistake of my life, and I thank Justin Vernon for creating such a beautiful array of emotions

Thanks for a great video. You've got a natural expositional voice. I've always interpreted the last line "your love will be safe with me" as the first words spoken to his next person with whom he falls in love. In other words, it's akin to the first conversation with his new girlfriend after they cut through the small talk and he shares his story: "here is what happened. It was terrible. But I've grieved and learned. And you can trust me." I love that there are different interpretations of this excellent work of art. I come back to this tune often and can listen to it on repeat for an hour sometimes. Again, thanks for your video.

A well done and deeply insightful look into the workings of a gifted poet and musician. A lyric that touches so many so deeply
does not ever have the same meaning for all...Rather, it opens a view...to the richness of our own experiences. When mixed with
all the metaphor and paradox as they reflect and confuse...and let the anxiety abate for a little while. Poets , at least the courageous
ones, show us how to give ourselves to ourselves.
