Ruffly Skirt Tutorial - With Horsehair Braid
Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 лис 2015
- This was a lot of fun to make! I'm sorry if anything was confusing, it's a lot of information to put into 13 minutes.
You can buy horsehair braid from etsy or ebay! It comes in all different widths and colors. Most Jo-ann stores stock the thin stuff (1/2" and 1") but the thicker type works better if you want really defined ruffles.

Haha I realize how my "linstening english" is baaad ! Thank you for that tutorial, I have to listen it several times to be sure to understand but I'll get it !!
That's a lovely skirt !
this is a very well explained tutorial. thanks for putting so much work into it!
This is still one of my favorite projects you've done. The skirt looks amazing!
I have really been wanting to make something using horsehair braid, but had no idea how to use it. Thanks so much for this awesome tutorial!

You remind me of myself 15-20 years ago! I used to make all kinds of clothes and enjoyed being creative. I loved this tutorial. I've never worked with horsehair braid; maybe I will in the future.
Your tutorials are so succinct. I love them, no talking just to hear yourself talk. Thanks so much.
This is a very well-demonstrated tutorial but, as noted by several of the other comments, it assumes a great deal of sewing knowledge. The finished skirt, if cut as demonstrated, is unpractical in that it is so freakishly short and, where I live, would probably get me arrested for pandering, and cost me my job. For those intending to make a longer skirt, plan on using 60-inch fabric. It will make it much easier to get the length you need. If you need more instruction (and longer skirts!), I would recommend this book: "Sew What! Skirts: 16 Simple Styles You Can Make with Fabulous Fabrics". It explains all the math and sewing techniques very nicely, even for beginners.
2DirtyDogs everyone has their preference, personally I loved the length and thought it was adorable, if its not for you she offers suggestions to add skirt length. With that said, anyone learning this craft should learn the "technical" terms, not only is the craft itself time consuming but explaining each stitch would double the time on the video. This is clearly not intended for beginners, beginners should begin with bows or pillow cases, not a fully lined skirt xD.
You are FANTASTIC!!!! Your skirt fabric is Beautiful!! Love how you could explain so quickly how to make this skirt!! Thank you for sharing your talents!!
Thank you for making this video! I was trying to follow the blog post you made, as I hadn't noticed you linked a video tutorial! This one is so in depth and explained very clearly. Thanks!
oh my goodness, i didn't know you had a youtube channel ! i'm so thrilled, i was so confused on how to use horsehair. thank you for explaining !!
Your workmanship is beautifully done. Love the end result
that skirt looks incredible and as much work you put into it, thats how amazing it looks! you are super talented
Awesome job and what love and care put into your skirt. I'm making one similar this week - but carrying the Half-circle skirt to the floor. I've always installed invisible zippers and only once have I done it your way. I guess with the thickness of the fabrics - it made it easier for you.
Thanks again for posting.
Awesome, awesome!! Great tutorial! You show "How to" and explain very well. thanks for sharing!
nice tutorial thanks! I studied sewing for two years and I understand the whole process of this dressmaking! it sounds much easier to make than it looks!
The skirt looks magical. Thanks for the tutorial.
Hai...I am a beginner in stitching..bt I did this skirt for my daughter by seeing this video..and it came out beautiful..and my daughter loved it..thank you so much for this beautiful tutorial...
I loved this, they were called ra-ra skirts in the early '80s. I am definitely going to try making my own basic patterns
This is so simple! I’m a new seamstress and I wasn’t too sure how to do the math but this helped so much AND I have a cute skirt!♥️♥️♥️
Thank you so much! I've always been a big fan of that post way back, and I'm super happy that you made a video about it. I'm definitely going to try this out some day. I look up to you when I do anything involving sewing!
I love that I found your channel. You do such beautiful work. Keep going!
You are an expert on your work. It is so wonderful watching your video. woww you teach tough technique in such a simple way. May God grant you success in your career. I am your Fan Now.
This looks beautiful and professional as always!
This is the most adorable skirt I’ve ever seen!! 😍 I LOVE IT!! I’m not much of a skirt-wearer, but this makes me want to make my own so badly! Also, you look gorgeous and incredible in it! The fabric you chose is so pretty too. I bet I have enough fabric of a suitable weight and weave in my stash somewhere, I’d really just need to get horsehair and a zipper, which is very doable! You never cease to inspire me, thank you so much!! 💖
Thank you. I was looking for a fitted waist, and this is perfect. I love this and I am making this for my petticoat under my retro dress! Well done.
I had a thought as I was watching this again...why use your waist measurement for the circles and not just use your hip measurement? I know there is a reason for it, however I wanted to check with you to see if there was a specific reason. Thank you again.
That blog post is how I found you and why I still follow you to this day!!
This was really lovely and I can't wait to move so I can have my own sewing room ! The fabric you used was really pretty ! This reminds me of the cupcake skirt you did a while back(I think it's on your blog) and honestly that's one of my favorites of your creations !!!
What a fabulous skirt! You're so talented!
Your tutorials are always wonderful :)
They're always helpful because they're thoroughly explained, with clear pictures (or video footage) and cute commentary along the way.
I always look forward to seeing new projects and tutorials from you :3
i feel like this could be useful for cosplaying anime characters
yep! i can most definitely agree since im using this for a cosplay
this is why i’m here lol
X4 xd
I think this would really be best for a sailor moon/sailor scout cosplay.
This is why I'm here lol
That's one of the best looking skirts I've ever seen.
This was actually exactly what i was looking for a cosplay. i searched everywhere just for a skirt like this, no results until i found this! thank you ♡
This is the cutest thing I've ever seen. I need it! Thank you so much for the tutorial!
Your work is so beautiful Angela. I don't even know how to sew a button but I always watch your videos.
Oh my gosh, that skirt is so lovely >~< I hope one day my sewing skills will be good enough to make something as beautiful as that!!

The fabric choice was lovely :) It's reaaally pretty! :)
Hi Angela!
You are amazing as always! This skirt is awesome and you make it look so easy!
Kisses from Portugal!
I don’t wear skirts much, and I’m not a fan of skirts shorter than calf length on myself; but I’m enthralled by how this skirt moves. I might have to have a crack at making one in my preferred length; it should move in a lovely way.
you have a beautiful talent!
wow wow wow,, you r extremely talented, I don't think that even professional tailors can stitch like you even after watching ur videos
you are truly an artist!

This is so adorable!!! Thank you :)
EXCELLENT TUTORIAL VIDEO. THANK YOU!
Great tutorial and very cute skirt. I'll have to get some horsehair braid to play with.
Such a cute skirt. I had no idea about horsehair!
Excellent tutorial!
Mine turned out super cute, thank you!
So cute and haute couture Angela!
You do such beautiful work 😊. Thanks for this tutorial. Regular circle skirts look bad on me bc I have a pooch. I think the wide waist band you did here would be more flattering on my body shape.
That's why I make all my skirts with a drop waist. I don't need any extra bulk around my tummy...lol.
अद्भुत
Omg this is so cute. Think i might try this for my daughter
i really liked will surely make for my kids...thak u for such a good info.
Beautiful and awesome skirt
hi Angela! I'm french, and i discover your channel. And it's very interesting! I admire you! Even i don't undersand all, i love your creations. continue!!!!!
( sorry for mistakes :/ )
Great instructions! Thank you!
excellent tutorial!! Thank you so much.
very-very beautiful!!!!
Since I don't have a serger I LOVE french seams. They are the best.
That's adorable!
Simplesmente perfeito,eu ameiiiii.
beautiful skirt !!!!
Un joli travail j'adore 😍
This horsehair is very new to me...live the DyI
Other people have already probably mentioned this, but you do say to assemble the waistband outer fabric with wrong sides facing eachother, but I think you mean right sides? You do it with right sides facing in in the video. No biggie. But I love this video so very much! As always, you are ridiculously talented. This will be helpful for so many cosplayers too! Thank you so much Angela!
+Morgan Weber Ahh I swear I watched this video through a dozen times and didn't catch that. Thanks for pointing it out - you're right, it's a mistake. I'll add in an annotation so people don't get confused. I'm glad you enjoyed the video and thank you so much for the kind words!
It was probably because you did the french seams later which involved sewing the fabrics wrong-side to wrong side. :) I can't wait to use horsehair braid in my next pattern! Thank you as always for the peaceful and informative tutorial.
this would be awesome for cosplay. Thanks for sharing!
It's beautiful.
thank you ... wonderful tutorial.
I have never heard of horse hair braid before. Hopefully it is called that in Australia too
Thanks you for this very detailed step by step tutorial!
It seems to be very long to achieve and be time consuming but totally worth it!
Is the horse hair very apparent as there no lining inside?
Thanks again for your time. Your video is so helpful!
Great tutorial! I wonder if I could scale this approach up for a floor-length skirt? I really want to make a cosplay of Scarlett Overkill's crazy coronation dress and the dratted thing is shaped like a jello mold! It would certainly be less fraught than some of the other approaches I'm kicking around. :)
Está hermoso y muy bien explicado
i am in love with this skirt
It's fantastic!!!!
Pro-tip for fusible interfacing, trim it back so that it sits just inside where the seam allowance is. This helps to keep your seams from being thick and also helps keep you from gunking up your machine, especially the needle.
It is beautiful !
very nice!! i love this tutorial :))
Fab skirt, fab tutorial (and fab legs - v. jealous!!). I was about to add crinoline to the bottom of a mermaid skirt. Now I have seen yours, I cannot wait to what mine looks like! x
