Hey everyone! This project needs no introduction... this is... THE SUNFISH. The most metal project I have ever done. What one started life as a Solar AB2.4BOP has ascended to levels never before thought possible. These Fishman Fluence pickups and preamp have awoken the BEAST. Let's check this thing out! We're going to go through ALL (well most ;P) the different tones with the 3 pickup voicings, single coil mode, 2 band EQ, and 2 pickups! Buckle up, crustaceans!

I have a Schecter sls elite 5 with the Fishman pickups and preamp..best sounding bass I've ever had and in 41 years of playing I've had many great basses Plus the Elite is a excellent bass..build quality, neck , weight , looks, playability,versatile tones are top notch My number 1 bass now

By the way Lobster - EMG DC's are a direct drop in also! A solution perhaps for those who could not wire this EQ (me). Anyway, the Fishman pickup solution is efffffn dope! Great versatility and design and I didn't hear ANY buzzing or noise!!

Just found an open box deal on Fishman Fluence pickups for a song, loved your demonstration of the various sounds they can produce. Planning on putting them in an Ibanez SR300E that my wife gave me as a present. Never really played because I disliked the pickups, hoping this will change that. i'm a skeptic regarding the fishman pups for bass, and their preamp but i just watched your full review of the bass and coming from that to this, massive massive improvement in tone even with everything flat. good lord this is good.
Boy oh boy - what an incredible instrument this now is!!! The treble at 50% and bass cut in voicing one reminded me of a (better) tone that I used to get from a cheap Rickenbacker copy I once owned - and stupidly got rid of. Good job Lobster 🦞!

I finally had my Fluence pups installed.A bit out of my league tech wise,oh how I wish I was better.These pups are all they (and you) said they'd be.Gonna take time to figure the voicings.Now if I only had your playing skills.

The Cort A4 Ultra Ash has this Fishman Fluence pickup and pre but is more stylistically to my liking. Great upgrade and demo.
Thanks Billy! Indeed, not many basses besides the Cort and Schecter with these pickups from what I remember. Wanted to try something a bit outside the box (yet still in the box haha) and it worked :). I dig the cort A and B series a lot and will be checking em out at some point though!

Badass! I plan on doing the same to an active Epiphone Thunderbird ‘cause let’s be honest, the active version is somewhat lackluster compared to the other passive models. However, the solid and beautiful construction of the TB provides a perfect foundation for these badass electronics!

I'm so tempted to get a set for both my ESP F1-104 and F-105.
They're expensive, relatively tedious to install.... and totally worth it if you dig the tones...

Voicing 2 is my jams!!!!!no matter white p/u its set to....also don't KNOW for sure if I would ever run it in single coil mode???....I have several J basses for that !!!!....now pressing on with more vid watching!!!!!!!

It probably could be done pretty easily. The installation of the fluence pickups is very much DIY, so swapping out components should be easier vs a fully prewired system.

Wow, sounds great! Definitely not an installation for amateurs though 😂 I liked the less extreme or scooped voicings quite a bit! Definitely would be a fun setup to have on a bass for sure 🤘

I'm usually pretty gung ho about wrapping up projects. I don't like to leave things half/unfinished. However, this one I started after I shot the review (at night) and actually had to finish the next morning haha.
Dude I can imagine. The moment you mentioned the solder points... 😬 Most techs and luthiers would probably charge about $100 for the install at that point! The sound is totally worth it though.

Lobster, what kind of camera setup are you using? I’ve been recording some guitar demos with my iPhone 10 a camera and getting mediocre results, even with good lighting shot at 4K.

Wow, so much to choose from within the single package of the fluence. Just finished modding a charvel with them and was interested in the bass pups ans pre for my mtd kz4 but am on the fence. Your thoughts would be much appreciated please.

Regular strings work fine. Great question!
It sounds really generic tbh im pretty underwhelmed. It has alot of flexibility ill give it that but how often are you gonna use half of those sounds. Any duncan p pickup still creams those fishmans with way less connections to fail on you.
I agree that nothing compares to a good P pickup, but I also think that if everybody poo-poo’d on innovation and options, we’d all still sound like a P pickup.
Thanks Steven! I definitely think a lot of the sounds here are pretty usable but this also no P-bass (hell it's like the opposite of a P bass haha). Still, at the end of the day, the P bass is "the" bass for many people for a reason. Simplicity at its best! I just got a "P" bass from a brand not known for its P's.... you'll see ;).

1:00 people used to bring their instruments and other stuff in to work and I'd teach them how to solder, either fixing it for them or letting them if they wanted to.

3:30 Just realized that *magic* occurs and those pickups seem to fit *really well* for aftermarket. Again, Ola already has other guitars that come with Fishman electronics in them OEM. Someone needs to get a Fishman sig deal and get that boi some bass voice lovin'

I hate Fishman for their complicated wiring. Do I need a Master’s in electrical engineering? Probably. On 2 out of 3 of my guitars with Fishman Fluence, I just used EMG wiring. Lol
Hehe, I may have cursed their name once or twice during the building process ;P. It definitely was tedious and I would NOT recommend it for a beginner. Master's in electrical engineering? Nah... Attempted bachelors of engineering? Yes (I switched majors, ain't nobody got time for that! hehe). I was actually curious about the EMG compatibility because of the similar connectors on the pickups, so you can use the EMG wiring direct with the pickups?
IF you have ANY issues with it ...just ship it to me and I will get it ALL fixed up for ya....you KNOW my address!!!!!

I think I needed to adjust the internal gain knob slightly as it was definitely clipping my focusrite. There's one on the preamp module in the cavity. But yeah, the slap tone is where it's at haha. It's sooo good.

Just too many options for me. Some sound awesome, some are irrelevant. A lot can be accomplished with eq-ing of the amp and a fine right hand.
Thanks Nomiis! Definitely a lot of options here, not for the faint of heart. I hear you and can definitely agree that simplicity often makes for a better experience. I love exploring different instruments, but one of my absolute favorites is my Stingray Classic. Vol, Treb, Bass. Never lets me down.... Man I sound old.

On 14:33 you get this CLIPPING sound. This shit is all over when you pick hard. And the sound changes depending on pickup mode. Seems Pickups are to hot for their preamp.
They sound cool playing light. But that's totally unbearable for harder styles. Just try playing Ace Of Spades. This clipping will be everywhere. Turning volume knob down won't help.
I can even achieve clipping in spilt mode. And no, my strings are not laying on pickups.

Ok so now ....just for research purposes I THINK I NEED to go back to the unboxing vid and give another listen to the stock tone and compare!!!!!!.....I'm sure this set up PROBABLY smokes the stock tone but hey its all in the ear of the beholder ...RIGHT????...ohhh and does it CHUG???...hahaha.....had to throw in a METAL term at least once!!!!..... AND speaking of ...you didn't windmill the hair not even once......metal point deduction!!!!!!!..... Yeah I had to sit down and really take my time. Took quite a while longer than something like EMG. However, the results were great. I do think they could achieve the same results with more user friendly setup.

Voice 2 is one of the worst things i ever heard. Make mids cool again.
I enjoyed most of the tones I got, but listening to other demos of fishman equipped basses.... they sound terrible. I really liked the finished product here but am still confused as to why the demos out there (Klos, looking at you!) sound like poo poo.
