I just installed my jbugs adjustable lowering struts and inserts and set it at the 3 ring setting from the bottom bug outer tie rods hit the chassis of the bug making a screeching noise Everytime I turn the wheel. It's like that on both sides. Please help!! I don't even have it at the lowest setting. Plus I put low profile/ smaller tires in the front. I have 165//65/15
My guess is you have a worn pitman arm, steering box, or perhaps a bent or improperly installed center tie rod. The left and right tie rods shouldn't be anywhere NEAR the chassis (or the body) when installed, regardless of ride height. Check our front end assembly video from later on in the series to make sure the tie rods are installed properly. ua-cam.com/video/6uLrym1npYc/v-deo.html
how do you actually adjust the height of the struts? i cant find anything on it i bought a beetle and have no clue what i am doing my front end keeps bottoming out cause its lowered wich i hate lowered cars in the first place
Hi there I just purchased the front end adjustable struts and strut inserts from jbugs. Will my 165/80r15 rub if I go the lowest on the adjustable strut?? Please help before I install! Thanks.
@@Sam_Mebane ok thank you very much. Unfortunately I'm having a hard time on the driver's side separating the strut from the steering knuckle. They are stuck together.
I’ve tried the first notch and popped a tire… I’ve set it on second notch and still get rubbing on left tire! What the best setting notch to set it on.. I’m moving the notches up from bottom up on strut adjustment???
@Jbugs Will I be able to have the struts adjusted to factory height? Will lowering the front effect steering or drivability. The wheel on my 71' super has a bad negative camber causing wheel to rub on strut springs on driver side. Mechanic says that my strut housing is bent?
There are some aspects of the 1973 that are going to differ, especially when it comes to the dashboard. Otherwise most all the rest of the videos will be applicable.
@@Sam_Mebane I installed these and they work great,. the problem is I installed them on the lowest setting and tires scrape when turning and catch inner fender and cut tire. Can I adjust to a higher setting and raise it up with everything in place or does the whole housing need to be removed and disassembled? Thanks in advance!
@@thegreener10 adjusting the clip can be done with the strut in place, but it isn't easy. The springs have to be compressed and pulled up away from the lower spring seat. Then the seat can be lifted up so the snap ring can be pulled off and raised.
Is there a trick to removing the spindle from the strut? I'm trying to swap my springs on my '73 SB (same struts as this '71) and the spindle is completely stuck to the strut. Would it be possible to use a two- or three-arm puller? At 2:00 the video sort of skips from when it's on to when it's loose, did it just pop off?
We use a hammer to free up the spindle from the ball joint, spindle and strut housing. Some might be happier together than others, some penetrating lube or heat may help, as may a larger hammer.
Super Beetles aren't common candidates for Baja conversions because of the strut front suspension. There aren't many (if any) lift struts for Super Beetles. The few Super Beetle's that I have seen converted use a full roll cage and cut off all of the front Super Beetle chassis in favor of a more stout tube front suspension or a completely custom A-arm front suspension.
With the shorter springs, you may end up lower than you’d like with the adjustable strut housings but, if you have the time, I’d give it a shot. New springs are available if you need them: www.jbugs.com/product/9628.html
@JBUGS in a later video when lowering the rear your running a 195/55/15 is that still okay at this height with no rubbing? because im currently using a 195/55 and im about to do this.

The body and fender will sit closer to the wheel with the adjustable struts, especially when lowered to the bottom position. Installing a smaller diameter tire may be needed when lowering the car.
@@johnnyturbo8460 using these adjustable strut assemblies, the midway point would be about the limit for most cars using a stock size tire. As always, check and adjust the ride height or tire size as needed.
No one said that we don't. We have them here: www.jbugs.com/product/133-303.html They aren't use-able when installing lowered strut assemblies so they aren't mentioned, other than us noting they aren't re-used at about 4:33.

1:37 I don't understand using a brass hammer on a chisel. I guess you won't damage the top of the chisel but it doesn't seem necessary.
Any hammer will work. I prefer a brass hammer as it is less prone to spark, damage the chisel and it has less vibration than steel.

71-73 assemblies - 50-61 ft lbs, for 73-79 - 43 ft lbs.

Spring compressors like these can be used www.jbugs.com/product/5728.html with the strut in place on the car.

Absolutely, the 195/55R15 tire is a fairly low profile tire so you could go much lower before you'd have any rubbing issues.
