Germany Announced NEW POWERFUL Tank

- The Leopard 2 is a main battle tank developed by Krauss-Maffei in the 1970s for the West German Army. The tank first entered service in 1979 and succeeded the earlier Leopard 1 as the main battle tank of the German Army. In September this year the German Armed Forces, or Bundeswehr, received its new batch of brand-new Leopard 2A7V main battle tanks. The Bundeswehr’s 393 tank battalion in Bad Frankenhausen in northern Thuringia was the first unit of the German armed forces to receive the latest version of the Leopard 2 tank in the A7V configuration. In this video we are going to take a closer look at this new tank, and see what changes have been made.
I'm an old US Army tanker from the 60s and 70s and crewed on the M60A1 (trained on the M48A2C). While in Germany at the tank ranges in Grafenwohr I was very impressed with the Leopard...it has done nothing but improve in the ensuing years. The Leopard is, at the very least, an impressive tank.
Same here trained on M-48A1, s M-551, Later M-48A3 , M-60, M-60A1,M-60A2, (POS) … M-48A5, M-60A3, M-1, M-1A2. Always impressed with the German Leo , and especially the Later improved models , on ranges at Graf.
I also believe Germans can make best tanks in the world.
@@TSUTENKAKU007 Seems as though they do...the data would seem to bear it out.
yes, it's very tanky, isn't it?

But Can it stop a javelin?
My country of Singapore 🇸🇬 purchased the Leopard 2A4 tanks in 2008 to replaced the aging AMX 13 SM1. It was refurbised and upgraded to the Leopard 2SG. The Singapore Army now operates 96 Leopard Tanks.
Thumbs up to Singapore. Visited while in the USN for R&R.
I've always been impressed with the capabilities of the Singapore Armed Forces, for such a small country, why do you guys spend so much on your military? Can't help being curious.
I was a tank technician when i served national service. Gotta say, the best feature is the air-condition system. Still remember how to turn it on even though it was like 9 years ago when I last drove one 😂
@@_Saracen_ This spending of money is BECAUSE Singapore is a small country of size - but big of technics and value. There is a lot being worth to be protected.
Singaporean Airforce is the most modern one in the region and to have Leopard tanks on the ground is the logical choice of same quality.
BTW, we in Germany name the tank simply "Leo" which means "Lion".
Singapores "Lion" as symbol of State fits well to the tank too.
Greetings from Germany.
As an American, I will always love the U.S. M1 Abrams tanks, but those Leopard 2s are badasses.
The M1A2 and Leopard 2A7V are quite similar
Same. I think for sure the leopard beats the Abram’s in the looks department .
M1 Abrams and M1A2 are different just you know M1 has worse armor and M1A2 has better armor.
They share both the same gun more or less, the Rheinmetall Rh-120. It is manufactured under license by General Dynamics in the US and is also in use in the M1A1 and onwards. But the M1 uses the L/44 version and not the more modern L/55 version. The original M1 initially had a 105mm gun. Other countries that use this specific gun in their tanks are Japan, South Korea. The UK in the future with the Challenger 3, which will be introduced into service in 2027. They'll also use the L/55.

Being Danish, I kindda loved seeing so many Danish Leopard 2's.
And i know, that our armed forces are quite satisfied with the Leopard 2 A7. I served in the Danish Army, when we had our first Leopard 2's on testing. I loved it.
"C4I" is not "C fourtyone". It's "C 4 i" and stands for "Command, Control, Communication, Computer and Information" equipment.
The Multi-Fuel-Engine of a Leopard 2 tank runs basicly on any kind of fuel and even on alcohol. It was designed for the case, that Diesel might not be available at situations, so it can use other fuel options, doesn't matter if kerosin, normal gas, alcohol, ship-fuel, LPG, ENG, etc.

@@namekman01 they're not flammable
@@tobiasheine1498 not with that attitude
@@tobiasheine1498 they even tested it with flour, does not deliver the full HP but was enough for slow movement..
You are thinking of the gas turbine in the M1 Abrams. Leo 2 engine is a basic Diesel, it cannot run on even regular gas.
The leopards are much faster than the given 68 to 72km/h. In Switzerland the have a max speed of between 90 and 100km/h. Passing them on the freeway is terribly impressive. In armasuisse tests they even passed cars to keep a constant speed. I do not know if they are throttled down in peacetimes.
should be gras speed or whatever its called.
I don't think that the Swiss or any other nation would go against the recommendations of limiting their Leopard 2's to 68-72 km/h depending on version. Yes, they could go faster, both cross country (where they usually stop at 50 km/h) and on streets, however, going faster than the speed limiter allows, would damage the transmission, final drive and suspension of the tank in short order, turning it into an armored bunker.
They can go faster but the tracks will overheat when sustaining high speed
@@Joey_Kuang This was exactly the goal of the mentioned test where they passed cars! They drove around 20 km forth and back at full speed, measuring the temperature of the tracks at several stops.
Going faster then the recommendated speeds will destroy the tracks very fast. It's not about that this engine can go faster, just the tracks can't handle this speed and could even brake.

Fun fact: A7V was also the name of the first german tank.
Extra fact: A7V literally just stands for the office of the Prussian military department the project was managed by: "Abteilung 7 Verkehrwesen" and means basically "Depatment 7 Traffic & Transport"
The Leopard 2 A7V was named after the A7V and was first announced in 2018, on the 100 years anniversary of the original A7V.

My thoughts exactly. Pathetic.
The upgrade ability gives flexibility to the Leopard. Its modular systems allow quick fixings within the battelfield. It is simply awsome.
Easily one of my favorites.
I do believe that most modern MBTs have there strong points and weaknesses. The M1 is one of the best tanks in the world but I have great respect for the Challenger 2. Especially after reading reports of a disabled Challenger 2 tanking multiple hits in Iraq.
When hull down, the Challenger 2 is like a modern KV-1 (Atleast during the early parts of Operation Barbarossa). It's def my favourite tank, but still not the best since the Leopard 2A6/7 are definitely better.
And again in times of crisis and facing a new world war, Germany has delivered the best MBT of all .... German Engineering - the legend continues .....

Yes and No :) It depends on the systems, working together.
And there are always `counter-developments` of course, to defend `big` units against `smaller, but much more intelligent` air-attacks. Only one example to this:
ua-cam.com/video/pb5_F4_Eod8/v-deo.html
Thank you for your comment... it made me thinking again about this everlasting race `attack vs defense`.
That anti-air owes some royalties to the guy who designed the hunter-killer robots in T-2 : Judgement Day.
Unlikely, the Marksman was developed for the British in the 1980s by Marconi. The Finnish variant, mounted on a Polish T-55AM hull and called the ItPsv 90 pre-dates the movie by at least a year having entered service in the Finnish Army in 1990.
In the 1970s the West German Bundeswehr deployed a similar short-range AA system in the _Flugabwehrkanonenpanzer_ Gepard which was mounted on a Leopard I chassis. It was developed in the 1960s.
I still think that it is the most beautiful tank in the world
About the mobility: ze Leopard 2 tanks are capable of reaching up to 120kph or 75mph when modifying the engine. During peace and training times they are limited to a max of round about 70kph because everything above 80kph is somewhat of a torture for the crew - noise levels are incredibly high.
About the ammo: the DM 53 is a tungsten core penetrator with heavy metal alloy, the choice of words in this video suggest, it's using a depleted uranium core. The only nation i know of that uses depleted uranium are the USA, Russia and, to a smaller extend, UK.
Also: the 120mm L/44 was introduced with the first iteration of the Leopard 2 tank and Leopard 1 tanks could also be retrofitted with it. The L/55 was introduced in 1998 with the Leopard 2A5 variant.
ABC protection: during peace times the ABC filter system is the equivalent of air conditioning. Whoever designed that system, he made the filter actually the size of a 24 pack of beer cans - making it essentially a fridge.
Good post. Small correction: L/55 was introduced with A6. A5 got the spaced armor.
@@Dummvogel L/55 was introduced with the Leopard 2A5 as combat value increase - aka: as upgrade. With the A6 variant the L/55 was standard, but the A5 variant had the L/55 first.
@@novocainDaimon huh? He is correct. A5 featured preperations to field L55 but A6 was the first variant to be equipped with L55 by default.

The M1 Abrams is a third-generation American main battle tank designed by Chrysler Defense (now General Dynamics Land Systems)[9] and named for General Creighton Abrams. Conceived for modern armored ground warfare and now one of the heaviest tanks in service at nearly 68 short tons (almost 62 metric tons), it introduced several innovative features, including a multifuel turbine engine, sophisticated Chobham composite armor, a computer fire control system, separate ammunition storage in a blow-out compartment, and NBC protection for crew safety. Initial models of the M1 were armed with a licensed-produced 105 mm Royal Ordnance L7 gun, while later variants feature a licensed Rheinmetall 120 mm L/44.
The M1 Abrams was developed from the failure of the MBT-70 project to replace the obsolescent M60 tank. There are three main operational Abrams versions, the M1, M1A1, and M1A2, with each new iteration seeing improvements in armament, protection, and electronics. Extensive improvements have been implemented to the latest M1A2C and D (formerly designated M1A2 System Enhancement Package version 3 or SEPv3 and M1A2 SEPv4, respectively) versions such as improved composite armor, better optics, digital systems and ammunition.[10] The Abrams was due to be replaced by the Future Combat Systems XM1202 but due to its cancellation, the U.S. military has opted to continue maintaining and operating the M1 series for the foreseeable future by upgrading with improved optics, armor and firepower.
The M1 Abrams entered service in 1980 and currently serves as the main battle tank of the United States Army and Marine Corps. The export version is used by the armies of Egypt, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Australia, and Iraq. The Abrams was first used in combat in the Persian Gulf War and has seen combat in both the War in Afghanistan and Iraq War under U.S. service, while Iraqi Abrams tanks have seen action in the war against ISIL and have seen use by Saudi Arabia during the Yemeni Civil War.

The enemy tanks were almost always destroyed from the air by attack planes or combat helicopters! Abrams occupied only the area after the fights with the enemy !!! So that it is no success to win a war against such a backward country as Iraq, Syria or Afghanistan !!!
Probably the BEST tank in the World, even better than latest Abrams tank.
It’s way lighter then our Abrams
@@darrylmuse9948 yeah I think the main advantage it has over the Abrams is its maneuverability but therefore it lacks the armor the Abrams has
@@darrylmuse9948 True. Less weight implies better mobility. Better mobility is a key advantage over Abrams in today's fast moving battlefield.

That Marksman model looks like an evolutionary step toward battlemechs. I am intrigued.

Australia had a fleet of Leopards AS1. When they were looking to upgrade the fleet, they chose the M1 Abrams over the Leopard 2. I like the Abrams but they already had the infrastructure to service and logistic Leos 1s, so the obvious thought was Leos 2s could be easily integrated into the Army training and logistic system. As well as the Mechanics already familiar with the Leos 1s. But someone made the decision for the Abrams and now we stick with it. They didn't even keep any Leos 1s as light or scout tanks but sold them off, scrapped them or donated them to RSL as static displays or museums.
I'm an American with little knowledge re tanks. I do have some automotive background with bearings being my point here. It has been my finding over the decades that both Germany and the US are on an equal basis in engineering re bearings holding up and proven over time. The US holds a slight lead but I'd have zero issues using German bearings if the US made are not available. Japan follows pretty close as well. My .02
@@victoreous626 Abrams and Leopard 2 stem from the same development program and although America and Germany went on in different directions, both tanks still share the same gun.
@@jansix4287 not really. While M256 is a license produced version of the Rheinmetall L44, it is not an exact copy. And Leopards have switched to L55 starting with Leopard 2A6 and now they are switching to L55A1 (Leopard 2A7V).
@@hendi1571 Okay, then they are ammunition compatible. Nerd! 🙄
Australia replaces its Eurocopter attack helicopters with US versions too and don't even start what they did with their French submarines deal...
