UConn coach Geno Auriemma after loss to SC: 'They took advantage of every mistake we made' | SNY

- In this UConn postgame news conference, head coach Geno Auriemma said the Huskies simply "didn't play well enough" in their 83-65 loss to South Carolina. The coach felt the team's transition defense was lacking and on offense, they missed several open looks, which is not a recipe for success against the No.1 team in the country. Paige Bueckers and Aaliyah Edwards each scored 20 points but Auriemma was disappointed in the play of freshmen Ice Brady and KK Arnold, who had just two points between them. Still, he hopes the loss will be a teaching moment saying, "it was a great experience for those young guys because it's the first time they've had to play big roles in a game like this."

South Carolina was missing their best player and still won big.
Not surprising. SC dominated the first half. UConn played better in the second. UConn has five starters and two Freshmen first off the best. They are missing four excellent players for the season: Aubrey Griffin, Azzi Fudd, Caroline Ducharme, Ayanna Patterson, Jana El Afrey, vive players who would be competitive if they were healthy.
Still, no excuses. Blown out in the first half. Played better in the second.
Period.

The freshmen weren't up to it, passing was bad, shooting as off, It was disharmony.
One of the toughest things for anyone, in any field, is to deal with something new. UConn does it to other teams with speed (generally). SC operates more slowly, but now that they have the recruiting edge, their players are quite good and taller. They contested everything near the bucket and banged our players around some.
Refs didn't call much that I saw. This experience was pretty new for this UConn team, and probably intimidating.
Shoot better, and what's the score? Stop Pow-Pow, and what's the score? So, dealing with something new and difficult in the moment isn't easy.

This comment about the starting five is why it’s time for him to go. He got out coached because Coach Staley knew that he would refuse to play the girls on his bench. She plays all her players and holds them accountable for how they play.His comment on them not being ready to compete in a game like this is a testament to his inability to coach in an era where the women’s game has passed him by. Three seasons in row key members of his roster sustain season ending injuries but he doesn’t see that as an internal issue with his strength and training staff. They will lose in the second or third round in the tournament playing only five players
It'll be a sad ending to his wonderful career. His stubbornness will be the end of him.
@@dwayneblackman2730 I agree. I doubt the UConn AD will make that move. The UConn fans will eventually get fed up. The school president will have to replace both of them. Failure to do that will guarantee that the team continues to slide into mediocrity.
I think you’re right but it’s so hard for anyone to touch a coach with his resume . I just hope he follow Coach K or Nick Saban exit strategy and not be forced out.
They should have gotten rid of him when he talked bad about Pat Summitt.
UConn need to leave the Big East if they really want to be competitive. The SEC is a diff monster. They play fast and physical.

@@Lady_K2 Maybe but everyone and their mother knows about the Big LEAST and the garbage competition. With the exception of SC…UCANT is the only team having conference domination. The top teams in the Pac 12 and ACC are battling and still remain among the top. Two ACC teams already outplayed Paige and UCANT. Two teams ranked lower than UCANT would run them off the court. VT and Utah. Pili would torch AE. And Amoore would show Nika what a D-1 point guard looks like.
This devastating 3 year injury plague that has doggedly refused to let go of Uconn *will* eventually lift. Here's some much needed perspective for the silly "sky falling" criers...our record during the plague:
2021-22 - 30-6 (Natty game)
2022-23 - 31-6 (S-16)
2023-24 - 20-5
The majority of the those wins come from playing in a garbage conference
Thanks for pointing this out, some people are acting likes it's the end or something for Uconn women's basketball. The last three years have been very tough for team but they have, for the most part persevered.
@@wda2478 okay, take good look at the teams they beat in the first two years that the original poster mentioned.
After that's down consider this, Uconn tried to get into a better conference during all the various phases of realignment but was unable to. Most of this was due to the top conferences losing interest and some members of those conferences not wanting Uconn to be invited. Thus Uconn was left with first being stuck in the AAC and going undefeated during their 7 year stint. Uconn then left for the Big East due to geographic location of its members and shared history. Uconn had no other realistic options other than joining Big East.
Lastly, all these people complaining about Uconn being in a terrible conference are just beating a very dead horse at this point, we all know that the Big East isn't great, find something else to complain about instead.
Winning games in Big East ! Boo Hoo! Winning by 40 against abysmal opposition, gives us a False sense of worth! You need tough, tall timber... Play the bench, we are losing anyway! Time to retire, Geno!
Geno, there's a 3rd possibility. Maybe you win when you have the better game plan. Your team is undersized and you have no bench. That's not the player's fault. Expecting your starting 5 to play a perfect game against S Carolina is unfair to your players.

Seeing how many people switch on geno is crazyyyyy yall switching like f***gets! but mark my words next year when we are all healthy and playing like that Top 3 team we were at the beginning of the season it’s gonna be a whole different story! KEEP THAT SAME ENERGY! UNTIL a SC program or any other team do what a Uconn has done such as accomplish 11 national titles then yall can talk! Look at the 9 times we blew past SC and look at the 5 times they won against us. The hype of all those recruits healthy or not never materialized. You need to understand that all those championships are behind you. The media sold you on how great they are to sell papers and air time. Your time has passed.
If he needs Ice Brady to play better then keep her on the bench. When she comes in the teams loses about 10 points. She can’t shoot, can’t rebound and can’t pass. Edwards doesn’t have the eye of the tiger in big games and Paige can’t take over an entire game. Her name isn’t Jordan. Geno has a really tough job. He’s captain of a ship full of drunken sailors! 😂

Paige just hasn’t returned as the superstar she was prior to her injuries. She used to shine against the toughest competition, but now fades into being just another player in their last two losses against SC and ND. With a strong starting lineup on the bench due to injury….again this year….. maybe next year the team and Paige will get a break from injury and field a full strength team , which may hopefully light a spark in Paige.
Nope, even at full strength,Geno will still have the shortest rotation in women's college basketball...

Having 7 players with no depth forced his players to play softer than they needed to. I've always had nothing but respect for Geno and the UConn program - but his inability to go to the bench was exposed. Buekers was gassed, but he couldn't sub her out. Carolina added the missing component this year (perimeter shooting), so where they have dominated and been challenging the past several years - now they have the ability to give a whole new look with outside shooting. I thought it was going to be closer (still a UConn loss), but this gam really showed that there are 2 groups of teams in D1NCAAW BBall -- South Carolina and everyone else.
The only four points difference was end of 1st quarter, after that it was over. South Carolina played 4 bench player [19 points] to UConn 2 players [3 points]. Kitt, Watkins, Fagin, and even Walker got a chance to wearn down Edwards. Geno method is obsolete.
You just got out coached! Coach Staley played every player and them young women handled the pressure from start to finish. And blew your out without Kamilla Cardoso.
Coach GENO claimed he will only play 7 players. He recruited more players and stated that they won't play. Is Geno unable to develop players? Why are analysts cutting him slacks? His starters are playing more than 35 mins. They might get injured due to extended minutes 😕

Nika has a history of "lousy" games vs REAL competition.
Please Coach - Look at the Transfer Portal . SC has athletes that you cant match with .. Please send Caroline , DeBerry , Bettencourt and the kid from Fort Wayne - allow them to quit or Transfer . Fudd is Glass . So is Griffin . Hard Facts . You Need a Bench that can contribute . Caroline could IF ever Healthy .

Ines didn’t even get into the game… a blowout… If I were her, I’d go back to Portugal ( tomorrow) and play in the European league. Geno also tends to throw players under the bus (imo)… The portal has changed the sport… Geno needs transfers for next year; he also might lose a few..
Give the young players some time , experience is the best teacher. Maybe time for Geno to retire. You had good run , much respect but the writing on the wall. And teams are coming for UCONN. Keep pushing ladies and do the best you can not having a coach who believes in who has to be rough.
A LOT of people forget that Uconn is missing players who would normally be starting. Geno is playing his freshman to get the experience they need in March since Amari is useless when she plays anyway..They had a bad shooting night from both Paige and Ashlynn. Nika didn't help with her 5 turnovers. They needed to play a perfect game with limited turnovers and they didn't. I expect uconn to go deep into the Ncaa's... There are a lot of negative comments about the coach for no reason if they follow UCONN basketball. The man has only won 11 NCAA titles..Find someone who is even close to him.....I won't be surprised if they make the final four.....Go huskies..
Muhl is so limited... 5 turnovers and ONE assist.. ONE made basket.. she can't guard athletic players... I said it in November, this team goes as far as Edwards and Bueckers can take them.. Playing Ice Brady at all is futile
Once they play a ranked team higher than 20 in the NCAA tournament, they will probably lose. They just have no depth at all. Injuries have really hurt them. If they can stay healthy next year, they’ll be a challenge for any team to face.
