They looked great. Geno is grooming his players. Taking the pressure off of some of them. Applying a little to others. It's an art and a science. Overall the kids should feel good about their performance but of course excellence is going to take some more time to refine. He loves them all inside but just has to stay a taskmaster in order for the team to maximize it's performance.
That is by far my least favorite thing about him. No one can argue with his success, but I often wonder if he’d be even more successful if he is less negative and critical of his players-particularly in press conferences. It wouldn’t motivate me positively to be criticized like that now as a grown man much less as a teenager.
Geno knows what to say .. He knows he has to have Paige playing her best every night , he is right with kids , dont let their heads get in the clouds especially your best player Paige . -- they need a coach like Geno - !! Bill Parcells like - Geno !!
LOL, Geno is loving this team's composition! One thing he hasn't mention is the level of competition on this squad. We suspect practices are intense and players know there's someone on the bench that can get the job done! Can't wait!
I dunno who’s idea is was not to mic up the people asking questions but whoever made that decision made a bad one. Sometimes you have no idea who coach Gino is talking about or in what context etc.
Absolutely agree with you. Are the reporters’ questions that unimportant? Why must we rely on closed captioning, which often times leaves us in the dark as to what is really being asked.

One would think with the "funds" that revolve around this team, that they could afford equipment to make this better. I love the whole program, I wish they would accept our comments and at least make an attempt to fix the problem.

Gotta love that Coach always finds a way to find the negative. He’s the one with 11 titles and a gazillion Final Fours, but I’d be way more positive. So what do I know?
I remember a moment in a game last year when Nika broke down in tears after being subbed out. After a moment, Geno sat down next to her and spoke so calmly with her. I believe that was a very pivotal moment in Nika's development as a player as she gutted it out and became a really solid player. One of my faves on the roster now. It was also at that moment during the breakdown that I think Nika and coach's relationship was forged.
I hope so. The way he puts down some of his players is, in my opinion, disrespectful, and displays the negative side of his personality. If he is just playing games with us, at the players’ expense, it’s in bad taste.
@@martinmunitz6753 He is not being disrespectful, He's challenging them to be better. BTW it works, watch interviews with his hall of fame players and see what they say about his coaching style. Spoiler: Rebecca Lobo attributes her greatness to him and what he taught her.
I was disappointed when at 5:51 he said that the level of competition was not what he hoped it would be. Especially when his team won by such a wide margin.
I think what he was trying to say was that there were a lot of fans in attendance and its kinda of a bummer that the game isnt competitive (because they are playing against a D2) so you know that it’s not gonna be as competitive as playing against a div 1 team. He doesn’t mean that his team wasnt at all being competitive. He’s talking about the overall game
I love Coach’s candor, thoughtfulness, intellect, passion, and talent. But I wouldn’t want to play for him. My least favorite thing in life is being handled and manipulated. I always notice it. It never produces a positive effect. And it never makes me want to do what’s being asked of me. Never. I’m self- and team motivated. Being pushed and criticized has a negative effect on me. I wonder for how many players that is also true.
The kids who come to UConn know that Geno and his crew will help them become the best basketball players they can become. And all the grads are like a large family. You don’t hear the criticism that a lot of other programs get. That’s cause they also help these young women to become active citizens and to think for themselves. It shows in how they thrive in endeavors after bball.
@@bettyspivack8067 Thanks for the thoughtful reply. I agree with everything you said. And you can’t argue with his results. I can’t think of a bad citizen in any of his former players. And I think Stewie, for example, would not be the player she is without Geno and CD and company. She needed to be ridden and pushed to become great. She was supremely talented but lacked discipline at first. Many coaches would have handled her with kid gloves and she would have ended up as a solid and maybe all star player, but she wouldn’t be in the goat conversation. My thoughts really pertained to me. I respond poorly to being pressured and handled. So I’m likely not the type of person that he’d recruit-as someone else commented-or maybe he’d handle someone like me differently. To change subjects, how great is this team going to be? They looked incredible against Ft Hays (and I know that they are well below most of the teams UConn will face). But the new pieces are really really good. Dorka is ready for prime time and is the closest to a Tim Duncan type player than any player I can think of in the past 10 years. Is really have to think about the most recently player with her type of game (not counting Stewie as she is Kevin Durant like). Caroline reminds me of a young Svetlana Abrosimova, which I hope turns out to be true as she was a top ten player of all time (in my opinion-totally underrated today). And Azie could create her own category. This team is deeper than than Stewie, Moriah, and Morgan’s senior team. Maybe closer to their freshman team. What a fun year we have to look forward to.
@@914Rocky Yeah, it’s gonna be a fun team to watch. He’s laying the groundwork to expect significant playing time for 8-10 players. The last time we were that deep was Stewie’s freshman year.
