I moved a 4000 pound kiln five times and I am a single woman potter. Seems a bit crazy to me now, but it was over a period of about 10 years. I initially moved it from Oklahoma to Michigan. Such a journey. Mine, I just had a rain guard over. I had to have one of those giant crane things lift it with a chain and then guide it into place. My gas firing days are over in retirement now as it took a lot of pots to fill it! Good luck!

The snow that sheds off your studio does that roofline connect to your new shed? What a major project!!!! I bet you were fuming when the doors brinks fell out! Awesome job Jon!!!! So much growth and Kai (spelling) has really helped, looking forward to see where you'll be in 6 months and of course this kiln unloading.

Great kiln , great results! Another option to protect any exposed wood, is cement backer board. The problem with ceramic fiber is that it sheds when disturbed, and you don't want to breath it in.

Thanks for sharing the journey with your new kiln! We fire a cone 10 gas reduction kiln and reduce closer to 1900/1950 - something to try. We also do a slow climb - the firing takes 14 hours. All the best to you!

This is soooo exciting and amazing to learn!! I just LOVE KAI!! I’m so happy you found him. Definitely use dark goggles for checking cones!!! Also if you use a flashlight that has a really direct beam you can see the cones much better, using the goggles of course! Make sure the flashlight is metal and don get it too close the the hole.

I was a high fire stoneware potter for 15+ years. Your temperature for cone 10 is 2,400, then reduction atmosphere. Maybe you made an error on your temperature. Gotta hit 2,400 degrees.

    Awesome setup
    Love your videos
Not sure of the relative cost of thing over there in the USA, but maybe
Instead of covering the roof rafters with fire blankets, could you more easily replace those ones close to the chimney with aluminium Chanel. ??

Being intimately familiar with Minnesota's climate I have to ask, will you be firing in the winter? If so it wouldn't be a bad idea to add a layer of insulation to your shed if for anything to lessen the thermal shock of firing it up and cooling down. Then get a BIG fan for the summer months.
