She was holding back in her duet with Roy Orbison out of respect for him but she can most certainly belt with the best of them. Her emotional expression is also phenomenal. My personal GOAT.
Oh yeah - one of the most astonishingly brilliant voices on the PLANET!! But yes, she's never been particularly "feminine" and was quite androgynous in those early days. I love her albums Shadowlands and Absolute Torch & Twang, and especially the songs: Lock Stock & Teardrops, Tears Don't Care Who Cries Them, I'm Down to My Last Cigarette and the Honky Tonk Angels' Medley (that she did with legends Kitty Wells, Loretta Lynn & Brenda Lee), Big Big Love, Luck in My Eyes, Pullin' Back the Reins, Walkin' in and Out of Your Arms and Nowhere to Stand... and of course, this old Pasty Cline cover.
Katherine Dawn Lang aka K.D. Lang is a woman and the greatest singer Canada ever shared with USA. And that's saying something, because Canada has a lot of great singers & musicians. K.D. has a voice like none other and I get chills whenever I hear her voice.
You listened to Crying, done with Roy Orbison. You should check out her solo version of that song... done as a tribute to Roy, it's incredible.

CMA winner (country music), Grammy winner (pop music), one of the most celebrated singers in Canada. Her voice is unmistakable and totally one of a kind. Another vote for her Hallelujah (live version)... either Juno Awards or Olympics.
I think my favs by KD is "Summerfling" and "Suddenly". She's a powerhouse singer! Love her bluesy and sultry sound. And, as already mentioned, her "Hallelujah" at the Olympics was incredible!!

I saw KD Lang a few times in the 1980's in Moose Jaw. I hung around with the bass player's sister. Backstage passes when the band passed through Saskatchewan. Amazing band; amazing performer. Thanks for sharing. (Nina Hagen , "New York")
kd is a variation of her name Katie. And I don’t know that she’d get bent about the gender mixup. She said she was ok with the ‘androgynous’ image because of her rebellious spirit against formulas and her natural way of presenting herself. She was proud of her alternative label.
Wonderful singer, very quirky. She’s from a very rural, 650 person town north of Montana. She grew up more country than most country singers, but never fit the mold of a country singer. Early on she billed herself a Pasty Cline reincarnation. Has a real affection for torch and twang country songs from the 50’s and 60’s.
Her career got derailed just as it was peaking in 1992 when she was banned(!) by many radio stations after she came out.
She calls herself a one hit wonder for her song “Constant Craving”. This song helped her win the 1993 Grammy for Best Female Pop performance.
I don’t think she ever found original songs that took full advantage of her voice and connected her to a large audience.
If you revisit her, her contemporaries country song “Trail of Broken Hearts”, let’s you hear her voice quite well.
She and Tony Bennett won a Grammy for their 2002 album of American Traditional Standards. Great songs.
And many think she did the definitive version of “Hallelujah”. She sang it to songwriter Leonard Cohen at the 2005 Junos (Canadian Grammys) and again at his memorial concert.

I've seen her in concert and she is crazy talented and funny. I drove out west on a trip and made a point of paying homage by staying in her home town of Consort, Alberta, a quiet, nice farming community. WOW!!! One of my favorite singers. She's the one who got me hooked on voice as an instrument. I heard her in person sing Hallelujah and my life felt changed. Every time I hear that song I compare it to kd Lang. She used to say she channeled Patsy Cline when she was younger. Love everything by her.

I love her cover of The Joker, of course Constant Craving, Crying and Hallelujah are fantastic and you should react to them. Her album of covers and collaborations of Canadian artists, from memory it was called the 49th parallel, is really great.
I didn't like the original Joker, but kd sings it so sensually and it such an improvement.
