  • Sometimes a car is in such good shape I should shut-up and just take photos - let the images do the talking. Such was the case with Noel's 327 V8 HK Monaro. But then, I would be taking photo's assuming many of the parts used in the restoration are aftermarket or sourced from donor cars. And I would be dead wrong. I didn't know that just about every part on an old Holden has a date-based code stamped on it, meaning that if you want to keep it as close to original as possible, you really do need to restore the parts that came on the car. As Noel told me, that is why it is so important to get a car as close to complete as possible. That includes glass and even the badges!
One question I wish I didn't ask was the current day value of the HT 186S GTS that I offloaded many years ago, when a little bit of rust started to show through. A jaw dropping OMG moment - I miss that car to this day and kick myself every time I see an old Monaro on the road. I will now have to kick myself just that little bit harder - and reflect on what an idiot I was to sell it. Fortunately, however, there are clubs around that help owners keep the marque alive and well, and "The Monaro Club of Victoria's Display Day" was brilliant, letting me re-live the past if only for a few minutes. We are all very fortunate such clubs exist because, without them, my recollections of Holden's in my youth would be restricted to dusty old black-and-white photos.

I Purchased a 327 Monaro brand new in October 1968 from “Dustings of Burwood”. Back in those days the highways had open speed limits, you could go as hard as you liked so long as it was safe to do so. I remember passing a Police car on a straight section of the Hume highway between Benalla and Wangaratta at 100 MPH. They were cruising at about 85 and this was not an unusual move back in the wonderful 60’s. Hence l have incredible memories of the 5 years and about 150000 miles l did in that remarkable motor car - experiences that are impossible to have today.

Great story mate. Thanks for sharing. I owned Peter Brock's GTR 1972 XU-1 courtesy car he drove in Melbourne. In 1993 I drove it to a Commodore release at the local Gary & Warren Smith as Brock was there doing his Holden thing and meet and greets. I said to him as he signed a photo for me I had an XU-1 out the front and if he'd like to see it. He said "Bloody oath let's go". I didn't tell him it was his car. He looked at the VIN and said "Mate, this is my car from 1972". I laughed and said "yep, here's the letter from Holden confirming it". Brocky couldn't believe it and I said "Take me for a drive?" Didn't have to ask twice - we left the venue and drove down the South Eastern and around Mt Waverley for about an hour. It's the highlight of my life.

As a 20 year old in 1981, a customer at my work offered me his 327 for the princely sum of $2500.00. No bank would loan more than $2000.00,and the oldies wouldn't help with the extra $500.00. A crying shame, it was one owner,113,000 miles on odometer. We had a test drive, and owner said as we left the 60kmh zone," change down to third and give it a squirt ". I did, the front lifted up and up and off it went ...Shall never forget the sound and surge, bucking and straining. Am sure all current custodians enjoy the same thrill.

I had a warwick yellow HK with Hustlers, the same as the one next to it. Mine was 5 litre auto. This in 1979.
That car is still around, was always a very good car.
