@Steve Jobs actually Dave initially wrote this song about a past girlfriend. The producer they used for this album Butch Vigg (who also produced Nirvana's 'Nevermind') said "when I heard this song I knew it had to do with Kurt" in the Foo Fighters documentary. A couple scenes later tho Dave actually says he wrote the song about someone he use to be with, but upon listening to playbacks it mirrors reoccurring issues he's dealt with his whole career. I had a sister that died of an overdose when I was 17 and I can really feel this song. I've never been a big Foo Fighters listener, but this song really resonates with me. As easy as it is to point out the obvious conclusion, I also can see it referring to ourselves as having lost contact with someone that was once close but no longer is in their life and yearning to have done more with them. I think the remorse would really come into gear when we find out they have passed away unexpectedly before hitting a certain age.
