    Molly isn't an abrasive. It's a solid lubricant like Graphite. It's included in high-pressure applications to ensure the two parts don't gall/weld.

      @@briancruz4343 in the extrusion business we coated the O.D. of extrusion screws with moly because the screws @$100-$200k are the cheap part and the moly saves the inside of the extrusion barrel. It is definitely a lubricant over an abrasive.

    What an incredible video. You can pretty much learn how to build any engine after watching one or two of these. Great series guys.
    The only thing I would've done differently is replace the scratched stator cover. It looks like it is still in good shape, but for an extra $100-$200, it would really give that extra touch to making it look brand new.

    Is there no need to gap the piston rings?

    • @cbxr7506
      @cbxr7506 2 роки тому +3

      They come ready to go, they used the stock cylinder + stock pistons, they usually check the ring gap on the cylinder but probably did that off camera, not really a need since they are brand new as a set. It’s not like they are doing a big bore kit from different brands cylinder/piston/ rings

    Actually not trying to blame on Brian's work, I ain't got a 1/100 of his knowledge and experience

      @@paulh9301 I have new ones, but I don't want to use them for the plastigage test, for fear of stretching them. That's why I will use the old ones for the testing. I think they will do, for that.

    • @JB82374
      @JB82374 2 роки тому +1

      @@johnb5519 after a certain torque is reached, there sould be no difference when doing the plastigage test.
      using old bolts at 2/3 to 3/4 of the specified torque should be fine.
      otherwise you'd really need new bolts for every test as well.
      So it is very .. let's call it "strange" that this thing kinda just got swept under the rug in the video.
      Normally I would expect it explicitly mentioned that they now had to order a new set of bolts because of that.
      Once stretched, the bolts def. cannot be reused in the same way as if they were new. And this is a liter bike engine after all.
      P.S.: I'm not (even) a mechanic by trade, so DYOR, etc.

    • @johnb5519
      @johnb5519 2 роки тому

      @@JB82374 These bolts have a specified torque, plus a certain amount of degrees past that, to achieve the proper amount as described in the manual. One use only. You tighten the conrod bolts to 14 ft pounds, plus 90 degrees, and the mains to 14 ft pounds, plus 150 degrees. I'll use the old bolts for the test and I figure about 18 to 20 ft pounds should do.

    • @JB82374
      @JB82374 2 роки тому +1

      @@johnb5519 as I said, you should be alright with way less torque on the old ones if you're just doing the plastigage test.
      don't remember where it was, but somebody did tests with no difference after 30 or so percent of the normal torque figure.
      putting more torque on pre-streched bolts can result in their unexpected behaviour.
