Gout actually saved my friend's life. He had severe alcoholism and started having different kind of diseases over it. He dismissed them all but Gout was so painful he couldnt ignore it or mask the pain by drinking it away. So he got it treated and as a side-effect a long period of treatment where no alcohol was allowed, he rehabilitated and has been sober since.
I quit smoking because I did some cocaine and would choke when I tried to have a cigarette. I couldn’t smoke for over a week. I said to myself I hadn’t had a cigarette and I’m fine so I quit. Never smoked again. That was 30 years ago.
I am female and had gout in my big toe when I was in my early 30's. I was not overweight and didn't eat a rich diet or drink much, so who knows why. I was given a medication that turned my urine orange and very quickly the pain and swelling went away. I am now in my 70's and only ever had gout that one time, but once was enough!
Getting gout in my early 40s was one of the best things that ever happened to me. I changed my diet, lost weight, started working out. I got into the best shape of my life and that has continued for now over a decade.
I was 32 years old when I suffered gout. It is so true that when someone is so much so walking around you, you can feel the immense, intense agony of the air they’ve pushed around your gout afflicted area. The pain is unbearable, I’ve birthed 3 kids, my last kid almost killed me and I could say I would rather birth kids, and that is bad enough of the two evil things a human body can endure.
@@joantrotter3005 I have never had kidney stones to compare it to! I've heard and seen first hand how bad kidney stones can be, I saw my dad sprawl on the floor in agony about to pass out from kidney stones. Quiet frankly I'll pass on wanting to know.
That's a hell of a testament, but I agree completely with how it's just about guaranteed to be the worst pain anyone's experienced. Like burning hot glass shards being used to pry your joints apart for a week or two straight with ZERO relief for almost that entire duration.
I agree with you! I used to hear the gout term and think whatever. Oh yeah, then it visited my big toe. Two weeks suffering during my vaca time & off the chart agonizing pain all day and worse at night. If ever you feel it go to urgent care clinic ASAP. It would take a very strong pain medication to get any relief....besides using the colchicine medicine.
Just so those are aware, a ketogenic diet, one that is rather high in meat, is a modern day treatment for gout. Gout is more of an obese alcoholic's disease than about meat consumption, as eating large quantities of meat alone cannot cause gout in and of itself, but alcohol consumption can increase uric acid levels which when combined with a high protein diet (meat or otherwise) in obese people. If you simply eat a lot of meat, refrain from alcohol, or just keep yourself at a healthy weight with normal physical activity, you won't get gout. If you don't drink water at all in favor of exclusively large amounts of wine, combine that with high protein, don't exercise, and become obese, you're likely to get gout.
Odd, I find these to be pretty minimal in any tangible information... I Listen to these around Co-Workers while most of them laugh about how singular and desperate these thoughts are.
Thats literally how i stopped having gout attacks. HFCS is what triggers my attacks, i eliminated from my diet and haven't had any major attacks since. Also when an attack occurs, fasting and drinking a bunch of water will help get over your attack much faster.
Gout is no joke. I was diagnosed with it when I was 19. When it flares it is so excruciating that I really wanna chop my foot off. It's like driving a handful of rusty nails into your joint and trying to walk.
I used to suffer chronic gout. It started in my early 30's and in the end it was rampant. It used to alternate between my big toes and was basically increased to happening fortnightly. I beat it though. I completely deleted refined sugar from my diet. At first it was hard not eating chocolate, drinking fizzy drinks, no ice-cream, no biscuits and definitely no lollies (candy) At first my gout went absolutely crazy, longer and more intense episodes but gradually it began to settle down. I am now 46 and I haven't had a gout attack for 6 years or more. I still enjoy my meaty meals and I still drink as much beer as I like. Dumping refined sugar worked a treat for me. I hope this helps somebody.
I got my first and only gout flare up at the beginning of this year. I had lost my job because of Covid-19 lock down and I sat around stress eating and drinking all day. The pain in my left foot was so unbearable that I knew I had to do something about my situation. Fortunately, I started working again; went from a bartender/waiter to a restaurant manager, and getting back to a healthier lifestyle, I haven't had an issue with gout since.

Actually it's caused by purines so look for sources of purines. Seafood, especially shell fish is a huge source so if you're eating a lot of seafood, that might be your source. Look up foods high in purines and you might find your cause.
It's doesn't hurt ..my father foot thumb is swollen like in this video ..many times he stepped on my nephew Toys (Lego, plastic soldier etc) and he say it doesn't hurt ..what hurt him the most when he doesn't cautions with his diet ( cousine with to much fat, certain vegetables )
I used to suffer from gout, the first episode went as follows: woke up to the amazing pain in my right toe. I describe a severe flareup as feeling like your toe was hit with a large hammer, and then set on fire, for real, that's how it would feel sometimes. I used medicine, then the old-school remedy of eating cherries, and reduced sweets, red meat, and shellfish. I'm gout free for years now.
I tried cherries and reduced sweets. The only flare-ups that I get are from any kind of seafood, or river or lake. As long as I stay away from any kind of seafood I have been ok.

Ben Franklin was carried in a sedan chair around the streets of Philadelphia by two slaves due to chronic gout. That sedan chair is on display in a museum now.
Good point. It makes you wonder if or when the swelling and pain left as they continue with the alcohol. I had my first and worst attack in 2012. I was a heavy drinker. It was very painful to even touch the blanket with my toe. It's been a while since it came back. I live a healthier life now.
I had it once in my early 20s. Turned out to be autoimmune-related, because I wasn't living the lifestyle normally associated with it. It was absolutely the worst pain I've ever experienced - vicodin didn't do anything more than take the edge off.
If you mix Black Cherry juice with water it will stop a gout flare up over night. Not Ocean Spray juice cocktail but real Black Cherry juice, most stores have it now. I take a water bottle and mix almost 50/50 and drink 2 or 3 of them throughout the day depending on how bad the pain is or sometimes even if my toe starts to get stiff just in case it is a gout flare up. Make sure you are close to a bathroom because you will pee for 2 days but the pain will be gone quick. By itself the stuff is pretty bad, almost syrup. But with water you can chug a whole bottle and its sweet like cranberry juice. I haven't been to the ER or the doctor in 5 years thanks to an old lady from my mom's church who told me about this, I am forever grateful.

I had one gout flare up in my big toe. Felt like someone was rubbing tiny shards of glass into an open wound and then pouring salt on it while passing and electric current through it.
An old relative of mine had gout, and while he was cleaning his rifle to pass the time he accidentally fired it and blew off his toe. He described it as less painful than the gout he had blown off.
I first learned about Gout from an episode of Everybody Hates Chris where Julius (the dad) got gout and they did a hilarious cutaway where a doctor explains the gout and he talks about the kinds of food that can cause it. Then they show Julius eating the food and every time he’s like “Needs some salt.” At the end the doctor says to him “What’s the matter with you?!” 😂
I used to have chronic gout that would alternate between big toes and occasionally an ankle. It was so debilitating but I beat it. I completely gave up refined sugar. It wasn't easy at first but I'm so much better off the sugar and I've been gout free for over six years now. It took a while to settle down (at least a year) but it worked. I can still drink as much beer as I like and eat whatever I want (except refined sugar) hopefully this helps someone. It certainly fixed me up.
My dad ended up getting his first gout attack in his late 30s... Freaked the hell out of him since he had never heard of gout before. Pretty much described it as the video does... Can't begin to imagine.
My son, who passed last year from the affects of a rare form of gout, changed his diet, drank very little in his short 44 years. NONE of the diets worked for him. He stopped eating red meat, shell fish of any kind, spicy foods, etc and etc.. He suffered from 17 yrs of age until his death at 44. All the medicines combined with all the gout that attacked his entire body, shut his kidneys, killed his liver, spleen and pancreas. So after losing most of his toes and barely being able to walk, most of his life was spent in the most God awful pain anyone should have to endure. I do not find it comical at all that anyone would call this disease a rich mans disease. He was far from rich and nothing fun or funny came of his suffering. I feel sorry for anyone who has this awful disease. My heart is forever broken.
I am so glad you made this video. I suffer from gout, I am a 69 year old woman and my youngest daughter believes it is all in my head. But she will believe me now because she believes pretty everything she sees and hears on You Tube. So thank you for making this video.
I first had an attack of gout, when I was in my late twenties. I have never been a heavy meat eater, but I did used to drink quite a lot of wine. The vernacular expression "as painful as f#b/" just about sums it up!

My father has gout on his left ankle and is always on and off steroids. He never spoke about the pain, though, because the man would still go on mile-long runs with me 😟 EDIT: I'm almost positive that he NEVER ran with me during a flare-up. It's almost impossible for him to stand when his gout flares up and I doubt he would put his health at risk like that :)
His gout cant be that bad then because you cant even touch your foot to put on a sock let alone fitting the swollen up foot into a shoe in most cases. Hes luck to even be able to use his foot. Also HFCS is what triggers my attacks, i eliminated it from my diet and haven't had any major attacks since. Also when an attack occurs, fasting and drinking a bunch of water will help get over your attack much faster. Pass that on to your dad.
I had gout in my left big toe when I was in the hospital a few years ago for an unrelated condition, and despite asking repeatedly to be tested for gout, was told that I was too young at 32 to get it and that it was just plantar fasciitis, despite the fact it was in the joint and not my arch. It was so painful I couldn’t walk. The cure apparently was to “keep massaging it.” The nurse who told me this then grabbed my foot and shoved her fist into my arch, attempting to massage the pain away. She got kicked in the face.
That nurse deserved it. lol I swear, some people should not be allowed to work in the medical field because if someone is asking to get tested for something, TEST THEM. Don't just ignore it and basically make the person think they're crazy.
@joem9528 The human body is bizarre. Recently I had to get tested for covid and turns out I had strep throat. No symptoms like coughing at all through the entire time I had it.
I developed Gout in my wrist back in 1974. It was blamed on my habit of eating a pickled pig's foot when I worked night shift, we had a local bar that sold that wonder and I availed myself of it as a supper meal at 2:00 AM when the bar closed. After being diagnosed and put on medicine to help with the disorder I continued my midnight hog feed till I moved to another city and joined their PD. I visited an old German doctor who had served in WWII with the SS, he had a picture of himself in the SS Uniform in his office and always drove a classic Mercedes. He talked with me at great length and told me to stop the pigs feet. After six months off the hogs feet, my gout stopped and I was taken off the meds. I have now gone over 50 years without a pigs foot and without gout. I would thank the old doc but he passed on many decades ago.
I have had ankle gout in both ankles (never at the same time though, my god. . .) a total of 4 times and I can tell you it is worse than kidney stones. During flare ups, my entire foot was visibly swollen and the pain lasted for 10-16 hours at a time. It was unmitigated, burning agony. Nothing stopped the pain and even slight movements were excruciating. I couldn't even fall asleep for how agonizing it was. Over-the-counter NSAIDs didn't help. And even when the consistent pain subsided for brief, merciful hours, any amount of movement or even a slight touch was enough to make a grown man cry (because it did). Each flareup lasted about a week and a half. After deciding enough was enough (and after finally learning that the affliction was, infact gout), I discovered the biggest offender of gout flareups was corn syrup, both normal and especially high-fructose. I completely eliminated these from my diet as well as limiting my intake of red meats such as beef and I'm now 2 years gout-free and I haven't had a flareup since. Knock on wood.
A friend of mine got gout a few years back, but not in the normal way, he hit his foot in just the right way that the uric acid in his joints was able to spill out. He said it had no visible inflammation, but it hurt even worse because it spread fairly evenly through his whole lower leg.
I had gout once after a particularly boozy Christmas and New Year. I hadn't eaten meat in a year and went home to England to spend it with my family. Drinking every day, lots of sausages, bacon etc. It was the most painful thing I have ever experienced. Wouldn't wish it on my worse enemy. Insanely painful.

It’s not so much amount of food as it is what you’re eating. The main culprit is meat (gout is a protein metabolic disorder caused by a missing enzyme).
Gout is largely genetic. I eat only a moderate amount of meat, don't drink alcohol at all, and only drink water with little added sugar in my diet. I also exercise daily and am at a healthy weight. I still suffered from high uric acid levels and gout attacks despite not following any of the things that would cause gout, and genetic testing has shown that I unfortunately have a gene that causes this high uric acid level. Thankfully allopurinol has relieved me of having anymore gout attacks in the future, but I'll have to take it for the rest of my life. Kind of a bummer.
I am a man, getting closer to age 50. And this is how I treated my gout after 2 months of horrific pain. 1. I drank lot of water. 2. Cut my liquor, meat and protein rich food. 3. Avoided purine rich fish like mackerel etc. 4. Prepared a drink with artichoke and lemon. 5. Masturbated twice a day, it helped too. Within 2 weeks after following the 5 above diet and exercise, I was back to normal. I can eat and drink as before nowadays, but I am cautious than before.
Gout since my early 30's from drinking and eating mildly recklessly all throughout my 20's. I'm in shape due to my work but my diet didn't match. I tried everything you tried...and yes for this story...even flogging the dolphin. Went cautiously back to some of my old habits and it all seemed to work for awhile. Until I learned that uric acid could remain high with no flares while uric crystal buildup continued. How I found that out was 5 years later...I no longer got gout flares in the toe. It moved to my knees and to repeat what one other commenter said, I'd stuff a kitten up a hen's ass to not get gout in the knees!

In order to imagine what pain and suffering Gout brings with it: The hyperuricemia crystals tend to expad and grow in the shape of a needle. So gout is basically having a curled up hedgehog vacating in your joint.
Gout is so painful that I was literally prepping a kitten to stuff up a hens ass to roast till the very moment he stated unequivocally that it did not cure gout.

Then have the uric acid level checked and see a rheumatologist if the gout persists.

This is likely these days a more likely cause, too much sugar intake and not enough balanced nutrition intake, as it does a number on the acid balance of your blood. A younger friend of mine addicted to lots of sugar and caffeine, a gamer, quickly changed shape with a heavy addiction to such things, and I’ve not seen him in several years. I wonder if he’s managed to kill himself with his malnutrition and is severely diabetic by now, as that’s another thing you’ll need to work to avoid.
About a decade ago--in my mid-fifties--I developed a tendency toward gout, which felt like someone dropping a bowling ball on my toe--for three straight days! Lost a lot of sleep. I got aggressive and cut all red meat, organ meat and shellfish out of my diet. My last attack happened when my sister-in-law tried to do me a favor by buying chicken frankfurters. A severe attack caused me to discover that even though the meat of the franks was chicken, the casings were still cow intestines--like for all other franks; and the label carried no warning. That was the end of that; my diet was greatly curtailed but my toe has been mercifully pain-free.
Tart cherries also help remove uric acid from your system. And avoid leaded glass and pewter, especially when drinking alcohol, the dissolved lead greatly aggravates gout. (This is why the rich had so much gout in the past... the poor could not afford to store alcohol in pewter or leaded glass - crystal - bottles.)
Finally I was looking for this comment, I was thinking the exact same thing as I saw the title for this video. I thought it was made up disease cause who would was this to happen to them, it sounds painful.
no bullshit. When I had gout, I couldn't even stand having the overhead fan on in my room. The pressure from the air hurt like a hammer on my joint. Hurt more than when I tore ligaments in my ankle.

You’re in your 70s what a blessing
Getting gout in my early 40s was one of the best things that ever happened to me. I changed my diet, lost weight, started working out. I got into the best shape of my life and that has continued for now over a decade.
How did you tell?
Congratulations
Nice
Same. Gout made me cut all the crap from my diet. I used to start my day with Starbucks. Now I start my day with LEAFY GREENS. Very necessary.
Got this at early 20s
I was 32 years old when I suffered gout. It is so true that when someone is so much so walking around you, you can feel the immense, intense agony of the air they’ve pushed around your gout afflicted area. The pain is unbearable, I’ve birthed 3 kids, my last kid almost killed me and I could say I would rather birth kids, and that is bad enough of the two evil things a human body can endure.
Was the same age when i first realize that i have gout as well
Was it as bad as kidney stones?
The motto for the 16th century was actually, "Catch Gout, get clout"
No doubt 💪💀

That sucks, your a kid ;(
Did you eat a lot of meat?

Actually it's caused by purines so look for sources of purines. Seafood, especially shell fish is a huge source so if you're eating a lot of seafood, that might be your source. Look up foods high in purines and you might find your cause.

It was so painful I couldn’t walk. The cure apparently was to “keep massaging it.” The nurse who told me this then grabbed my foot and shoved her fist into my arch, attempting to massage the pain away.
She got kicked in the face.

Me too jefferson ye. I tried all sorts of changes to my diet, nothing worked.
same. vegetarian for 20 yrs. Allopurinol only thing that stopped it.
Yes, any excuse will do..🤣
Gotta do what you gotta do
Gout since my early 30's from drinking and eating mildly recklessly all throughout my 20's.
Me and my middle class wondering
...wtf is mackerel?
...f**k! I've never thought to ask my doctor how much purine and uric acid is there ejaculated in each puddle of spunk?! 🤣
"The Boston Tea Party, a major step towards the American Revolution, and the most tea ever spilled before Twitter, may not have even happened without gout."
In order to imagine what pain and suffering Gout brings with it: The hyperuricemia crystals tend to expad and grow in the shape of a needle. So gout is basically having a curled up hedgehog vacating in your joint.

Exactly how I felt watching this video. Especially since I’m pretty sure my mom had it, and I eat a lot of meat. Fuck, I’m gonna get a salad for tonight and not eat meat for a week. 😭
I’m never drinking wine...
@@halcyondays4922 Wine, especially red wine, is NOT a trigger for gout. As a matter of fact some believe that the anthrocyanins in red wine help prevent gout. The REAL culprits are yeasty things, including beer, and also shellfish.
nanoRat I heard that wine is bad for your liver, so I’ll just not. Idk if that’s true, but it’s better to be cautious, right?

iluvubb247 damn my brother has it
My younger brother has gout as well.. He's even had to have his pinky amputated cuz the uric acid there ate his bone to the size of a matchstick. I feel so bad for him cuz he describes the pain as unbearable. I hope one day the doctor will be able to help him, hes depressed as well and has seriously considered suicide all cuz of gout...
Fuck Gout.
Tell your friend to see a doctor and ask for a uric acid blood test and if it’s high to use allopurinol 100-300 mg daily for 2 weeks to get the uric acid down and to use 5-10mg of colchicine 2-3x daily for 14 days and 10-20 mg of prednisone for 7 days to get rid of the inflammation. Then have the uric acid level checked and see a rheumatologist if the gout persists.
@@michaelpimentel3002 A deltasone would better. Although its more expensive since its a brand name.
@@vinchcinch42 Yes. Generics aren’t as good as brands in terms of secondary effects according to research by the non-profit Howard Hughes Foundation circa 1990s. In acute inflammatory cases like gout, it is the primary anti-inflammatory effect over a short time that makes this generic a better choice because: 1) cost-generics are cheaper as you noted and 2) availability-the FDA states the brand deltasone is discontinued.
I had gout from my early 30’s till about 55, I retired lost weight(80 lbs), lost my stress, quit drinking alcohol and sodas, reduced my meat intake to less then 10% of what it was, exercise daily, fasted, and the gout went away, I no longer take meds for gout, and haven’t had a flare up for over 3 years. Life style and stress created my gout conditions.
Am glad to hear that

I had chronic gout attacks at age 32. I was ohysically active working out 5=7 days a week, but a meat eater. It would last for days and sometimes weeks even with treating it with medication. I decided to find my own remedy as the meds was bad for my kidneys and not solving the problem even with diet change. I started juicing to get more probiotics in my body get get less toxic, and juicing whole watermelon slices including the rind was the solution for me! Watermelon completely got rid of my arthritis and gout attacks naturally after a few months fof drinking it a fee times a week. , UA-cam watermelon and its benefits and thank me later. Its a God send and ive been gout free for years now and now im 51. I had gout from age 32 to age 38 constantly and out of nowhere with no relief. Been on crutches and a wheelchair for days when it was bad and had pain 24 hours a day for days and weeks when i had it. Glad its gone!
Holy shit,,,,,,,,,, that is bad !!!!!!!
Gotta love ancient remedies. Heating up the foot could seemingly shutdown the kidneys and cause death. Doctor- Well at least he's cured of gout, my job is done.
Hey Weird History!
My father has Gout & really loved this video. It's exactly like you said. He had a horrible diet due to working odd hours, he was also eating at night & drank beer heavily.
I also have a "weird" illness that I would LOVE for you to do a video like this about. I have Narcolepsy (more specifically, Narcolepsy with Cataplexy). It is very misunderstood & easy to make jokes about because of how odd it is. Thank for your awesome videos!!!
Bless him dearly.
I'm a non-drinker and a vegetarian so the "rich diet" thing isn't actually a thing in all cases. Yes, gout is so awful I thought I'd broken my toe.
Much like type 1 and type 2 diabetes. First one is hereditary and the second one is usually junk food and obesity.
Sometimes it's oxalates.
Mabe its from all the veggies, do you eat large helpings of vegetables and no milk or meat like substances that could provide better nutrition. What I'm saying is the vitamins and other nutrients could cause gout if too much is consumed, Mabe a little meat could help or milk I'm not sure if vegetarians can drink regular milk so like almond milk found possibly help even it out because of vitamin D.
Interesting comment. Thank you for this. 🙏
@@aoikemono6414
People who have type 1 and type 2 diabetes are both caused by genetics. Type 2 tends to be more metabolic in nature and a bad diet can unfortunately expose that genetic make up.

Gout is something that makes you seriously think about getting your foot amputated. It’s that painful. The worst part is, it’s nearly impossible to get good sleep during the most extreme parts of it. Even if you fall asleep, you will touch something and the excruciating pain will wake you up.

Going through this right now. I don’t drink alcohol or eat that much meat. However, I have been drinking energy drinks since I was 15 and I’m 33 now. This is the first time I’ve ever gotten gout and I imagine it’s because I’ve been drinking a bunch of red bulls everyday for the last few weeks. Treating my body like a trash can has finally caught up with me. It always catches up to everybody. Be healthy, folks.
This is the most painful thing I’ve felt in my life.
Drink lemon juice (squeeze the lemon from market, not any bottled juice) with normal temperature water everyday. Gout will go away.
There's an episode of disenchantment where the king actually wanted this

This was an interesting video. I had never heard gout was the disease of kings. I have had a couple of male friends, in the 40s with gout. I always thought it was because they drank tooo much. Well, I am now an old lady- 70. I was on a medication that has a side effect- it gave me GOUT!!!! I stopped taking the medication, and there is no real cure, so I drink a lot of water and eat very little red meats or organ meat. I eat mostly chicken, lots of vegetables, fruit and salads. My only shame still is I like my sweet tea. I am working on getting that out of my diet. Also, I was told to drink black cherry juice with water, and that would lower my acids that cause gout. So, I am a work in progress with the gout.
My cousin gets it from time to time. His can be flared up by eating green beans.
