The History of Gout | The Disease of Kings

  • For centuries, many have called gout "the disease of kings" because it affected men who ate rich diets and drank heavily. As early as the ancient Greeks, doctors wrote about gout, claiming that only wealthy men could become afflicted with it. And when royals like Henry VIII came down with gout, it transformed into a fashionable condition. Just like the French imitated the royals at Versailles, Europeans aimed to get gout as a status symbol. In the 16th century, men claimed that gout prevented other maladies and even called it an aphrodisiac.

Gout actually saved my friend's life. He had severe alcoholism and started having different kind of diseases over it. He dismissed them all but Gout was so painful he couldnt ignore it or mask the pain by drinking it away. So he got it treated and as a side-effect a long period of treatment where no alcohol was allowed, he rehabilitated and has been sober since.

Just so those are aware, a ketogenic diet, one that is rather high in meat, is a modern day treatment for gout. Gout is more of an obese alcoholic's disease than about meat consumption, as eating large quantities of meat alone cannot cause gout in and of itself, but alcohol consumption can increase uric acid levels which when combined with a high protein diet (meat or otherwise) in obese people. If you simply eat a lot of meat, refrain from alcohol, or just keep yourself at a healthy weight with normal physical activity, you won't get gout. If you don't drink water at all in favor of exclusively large amounts of wine, combine that with high protein, don't exercise, and become obese, you're likely to get gout.

I was 32 years old when I suffered gout. It is so true that when someone is so much so walking around you, you can feel the immense, intense agony of the air they’ve pushed around your gout afflicted area. The pain is unbearable, I’ve birthed 3 kids, my last kid almost killed me and I could say I would rather birth kids, and that is bad enough of the two evil things a human body can endure.

The pain in my left foot was so unbearable that I knew I had to do something about my situation. I used to suffer chronic gout. It started in my early 30's and in the end it was rampant. It used to alternate between my big toes and was basically increased to happening fortnightly. I beat it though. I completely deleted refined sugar from my diet. At first it was hard not eating chocolate, drinking fizzy drinks, no ice-cream, no biscuits and definitely no lollies (candy) At first my gout went absolutely crazy, longer and more intense episodes but gradually it began to settle down. I am now 46 and I haven't had a gout attack for 6 years or more. I still enjoy my meaty meals and I still drink as much beer as I like. Dumping refined sugar worked a treat for me. I hope this helps somebody.

    1. I drank lot of water.
    2. Cut my liquor, meat and protein rich food.
    3. Avoided purine rich fish like mackerel etc.
    4. Prepared a drink with artichoke and lemon.
    5. Masturbated twice a day, it helped too.
Within 2 weeks after following the 5 above diet and exercise, I was back to normal. I can eat and drink as before nowadays, but I am cautious than before.

Gout since my early 30's from drinking and eating mildly recklessly all throughout my 20's. I'm in shape due to my work but my diet didn't match. I tried everything you tried...and yes for this story...even flogging the dolphin. Went cautiously back to some of my old habits and it all seemed to work for awhile. Until I learned that uric acid could remain high with no flares while uric crystal buildup continued. How I found that out was 5 years later...I no longer got gout flares in the toe. It moved to my knees and to repeat what one other commenter said, I'd stuff a kitten up a hen's ass to not get gout in the knees!

I decided to find my own remedy as the meds was bad for my kidneys and not solving the problem even with diet change. I started juicing to get more probiotics in my body get get less toxic, and juicing whole watermelon slices including the rind was the solution for me! Watermelon completely got rid of my arthritis and gout attacks naturally after a few months fof drinking it a fee times a week. , UA-cam watermelon and its benefits and thank me later. When he does get a flare up, after so long he has me gently massage the area helping with his circulation. Although I try to get him to eat cherries or drink unsweetened cherry juice, he doesn't always listen. Also, after so long, he will purposely force the afflicted joint to be used to break up the uric acid. When I get him to drink water more, he has less and less severe flare ups. I have never heard of using charcoal.

My son, who passed last year from the affects of a rare form of gout, changed his diet, drank very little in his short 44 years. NONE of the diets worked for him. He stopped eating red meat, shell fish of any kind, spicy foods, etc and etc..
He suffered from 17 yrs of age until his death at 44. All the medicines combined with all the gout that attacked his entire body, shut his kidneys, killed his liver, spleen and pancreas. So after losing most of his toes and barely being able to walk, most of his life was spent in the most God awful pain anyone should have to endure. I do not find it comical at all that anyone would call this disease a rich mans disease. He was far from rich and nothing fun or funny came of his suffering. If you mix Black Cherry juice with water it will stop a gout flare up over night. Not Ocean Spray juice cocktail but real Black Cherry juice, most stores have it now. I take a water bottle and mix almost 50/50 and drink 2 or 3 of them throughout the day depending on how bad the pain is or sometimes even if my toe starts to get stiff just in case it is a gout flare up. Make sure you are close to a bathroom because you will pee for 2 days but the pain will be gone quick. By itself the stuff is pretty bad, almost syrup. But with water you can chug a whole bottle and its sweet like cranberry juice. I haven't been to the ER or the doctor in 5 years thanks to an old lady from my mom's church who told me about this, I am forever grateful.

My cholesterol spiked up to 230 and i had gout as a result for a month. The first week was absolutely agonizing. I only slept about 20 minutes each night because it was so bad. Had nothing to do with my diet at all. Once my medication was adjusted, my cholesterol levels were absolutely normal.

I had gout in my left big toe when I was in the hospital a few years ago for an unrelated condition, and despite asking repeatedly to be tested for gout, was told that I was too young at 32 to get it and that it was just plantar fasciitis, despite the fact it was in the joint and not my arch. It was so painful I couldn’t walk. The cure apparently was to “keep massaging it.” The nurse who told me this then grabbed my foot and shoved her fist into my arch, attempting to massage the pain away.
She got kicked in the face.

I have been tortured by gout, and it's the worst pain you can imagine. Gout can attack any joint, not just in the feet. And mine did, which threw the doctors off. Finally, I wondered if it could be cause as a side effect to some medications, so I went to work searching for side effects of the meds I took. Sur enough, Hydrochlorothiazide can cause gout. I was taking Hydrochlorothiazide. I stopped taking it, and it was like switching off a light, in this case a pain switch. Within two days, the gout was gone, and after 5 years, has never returned.

Genetics plays a HUGE part in someone's likelyhood for getting gout flare ups and the severity of them it seems. Beer and seafood are big triggers for it I know. My ex is highly prone to gout flare ups and I watched him go through so many over the years we were together. Sometimes it would last for weeks or even months at a time, starting in one foot and eventually traveling to the other one before calming down, making him extremely irritable and barely able to walk the entire time. Sometimes it would even travel up to his ankles and knees as well. Gout is absolutely a punishment a wouldn't wish on even my worst enemy.

Also HFCS is what triggers my attacks, i eliminated it from my diet and haven't had any major attacks since. I also exercise daily and am at a healthy weight. I still suffered from high uric acid levels and gout attacks despite not following any of the things that would cause gout, and genetic testing has shown that I unfortunately have a gene that causes this high uric acid level. Thankfully allopurinol has relieved me of having anymore gout attacks in the future, but I'll have to take it for the rest of my life. Kind of a bummer.
