The History of Gout | The Disease of Kings

- Опубліковано 10 гру 2019
- For centuries, many have called gout "the disease of kings" because it affected men who ate rich diets and drank heavily. As early as the ancient Greeks, doctors wrote about gout, claiming that only wealthy men could become afflicted with it. And when royals like Henry VIII came down with gout, it transformed into a fashionable condition. Just like the French imitated the royals at Versailles, Europeans aimed to get gout as a status symbol. In the 16th century, men claimed that gout prevented other maladies and even called it an aphrodisiac.

What rich food or delicious drink would you trade-off for gout?
Definitely not pork!!
Weird History Absolutely nothing.
I already have surrendered red meats and booze. All booze. No Turkey. No Tuna. Too much D:
Nothing, I had two options growing up. Steak and vegetables, or vegetables and steak. Never had gout and neither has any of my family members.

Gout actually saved my friend's life. He had severe alcoholism and started having different kind of diseases over it. He dismissed them all but Gout was so painful he couldnt ignore it or mask the pain by drinking it away. So he got it treated and as a side-effect a long period of treatment where no alcohol was allowed, he rehabilitated and has been sober since.
What a wild story
Gout is waayyy better than AA
I quit smoking because I did some cocaine and would choke when I tried to have a cigarette. I couldn’t smoke for over a week. I said to myself I hadn’t had a cigarette and I’m fine so I quit. Never smoked again. That was 30 years ago.

Just so those are aware, a ketogenic diet, one that is rather high in meat, is a modern day treatment for gout. Gout is more of an obese alcoholic's disease than about meat consumption, as eating large quantities of meat alone cannot cause gout in and of itself, but alcohol consumption can increase uric acid levels which when combined with a high protein diet (meat or otherwise) in obese people. If you simply eat a lot of meat, refrain from alcohol, or just keep yourself at a healthy weight with normal physical activity, you won't get gout. If you don't drink water at all in favor of exclusively large amounts of wine, combine that with high protein, don't exercise, and become obese, you're likely to get gout.

Getting gout in my early 40s was one of the best things that ever happened to me. I changed my diet, lost weight, started working out. I got into the best shape of my life and that has continued for now over a decade.
How did you tell?
Congratulations

Same. Gout made me cut all the crap from my diet. I used to start my day with Starbucks. Now I start my day with LEAFY GREENS. Very necessary.

I was 32 years old when I suffered gout. It is so true that when someone is so much so walking around you, you can feel the immense, intense agony of the air they’ve pushed around your gout afflicted area. The pain is unbearable, I’ve birthed 3 kids, my last kid almost killed me and I could say I would rather birth kids, and that is bad enough of the two evil things a human body can endure.
Was the same age when i first realize that i have gout as well
Was it as bad as kidney stones?
@@joantrotter3005 I have never had kidney stones to compare it to! I've heard and seen first hand how bad kidney stones can be, I saw my dad sprawl on the floor in agony about to pass out from kidney stones.
Quiet frankly I'll pass on wanting to know.
That's a hell of a testament, but I agree completely with how it's just about guaranteed to be the worst pain anyone's experienced. Like burning hot glass shards being used to pry your joints apart for a week or two straight with ZERO relief for almost that entire duration.
I agree with you! I used to hear the gout term and think whatever. Oh yeah, then it visited my big toe. Two weeks suffering during my vaca time & off the chart agonizing pain all day and worse at night. If ever you feel it go to urgent care clinic ASAP. It would take a very strong pain medication to get any relief....besides using the colchicine medicine.

People do it to themselves, no doubt.
Could use hot sauce, herbs and spices, and just a little pink salt. Pink salt also contains many trace minerals.
Not true. You have to research foods rich in uric acid
It’s not so much amount of food as it is what you’re eating. The main culprit is meat (gout is a protein metabolic disorder caused by a missing enzyme).
Funny how they knew it was related to diet but never thought that changing diet could fix it
Thats literally how i stopped having gout attacks. HFCS is what triggers my attacks, i eliminated from my diet and haven't had any major attacks since. Also when an attack occurs, fasting and drinking a bunch of water will help get over your attack much faster.
This logic still exists today.
They wanted it, gout gave them clout

Similar. First had mine at 25. Rarely drank. Had very little meat. Wasn't overweight.
Actually it's caused by purines so look for sources of purines. Seafood, especially shell fish is a huge source so if you're eating a lot of seafood, that might be your source. Look up foods high in purines and you might find your cause.

Did you eat a lot of meat?
I used to suffer chronic gout. It started in my early 30's and in the end it was rampant. It used to alternate between my big toes and was basically increased to happening fortnightly. I beat it though. I completely deleted refined sugar from my diet. At first it was hard not eating chocolate, drinking fizzy drinks, no ice-cream, no biscuits and definitely no lollies (candy) At first my gout went absolutely crazy, longer and more intense episodes but gradually it began to settle down. I am now 46 and I haven't had a gout attack for 6 years or more. I still enjoy my meaty meals and I still drink as much beer as I like. Dumping refined sugar worked a treat for me. I hope this helps somebody.

4. Prepared a drink with artichoke and lemon.

Gout since my early 30's from drinking and eating mildly recklessly all throughout my 20's. I'm in shape due to my work but my diet didn't match. I tried everything you tried...and yes for this story...even flogging the dolphin. Went cautiously back to some of my old habits and it all seemed to work for awhile. Until I learned that uric acid could remain high with no flares while uric crystal buildup continued. How I found that out was 5 years later...I no longer got gout flares in the toe. It moved to my knees and to repeat what one other commenter said, I'd stuff a kitten up a hen's ass to not get gout in the knees!

When he does get a flare up, after so long he has me gently massage the area helping with his circulation. Although I try to get him to eat cherries or drink unsweetened cherry juice, he doesn't always listen. Also, after so long, he will purposely force the afflicted joint to be used to break up the uric acid. When I get him to drink water more, he has less and less severe flare ups. If you mix Black Cherry juice with water it will stop a gout flare up over night. Not Ocean Spray juice cocktail but real Black Cherry juice, most stores have it now. I take a water bottle and mix almost 50/50 and drink 2 or 3 of them throughout the day depending on how bad the pain is or sometimes even if my toe starts to get stiff just in case it is a gout flare up. Make sure you are close to a bathroom because you will pee for 2 days but the pain will be gone quick. By itself the stuff is pretty bad, almost syrup. But with water you can chug a whole bottle and its sweet like cranberry juice. I love it how the Weird History narrator cracks some jokes of the videos he’s narrating
A+ video!
LOVE IT! What a fascinating, unique, and rather unsettling phenomena!
"The Boston Tea Party, a major step towards the American Revolution, and the most tea ever spilled before Twitter, may not have even happened without gout."
I love how the narrators know a lot about pop culture, social media and "spilling tea"😂
I wasn't expecting that Twitter tea part lol

Im 22. Last year, my thyroid disorder was so unregulated that i had no thyroid hormone to properly filter out my cholesterol levels. My cholesterol spiked up to 230 and i had gout as a result for a month. The first week was absolutely agonizing. I only slept about 20 minutes each night because it was so bad. Had nothing to do with my diet at all. Once my medication was adjusted, my cholesterol levels were absolutely normal.
I'm learning so much from this channel you guys rock!
The Japanese word for Gout is "Tsuufuu", which basically means.... even a small breeze of air will cause pain.
this is fact ...been there and even request an amputation
"I gots gout in every joint"
"Aw mans Sarah, you better git with HIM"
I have had at least 50 gout attacks over the years and it is the most extreme pain I have ever felt in my life, I take medication for it but I still sometimes get attacks. It feels like the bones in my foot and sometimes ankle are broken like someone hit them with a baseball bat several times, can't put any weight on your foot I remember one time I had to crawl to the bathroom getting out of bed
I suffered my first gout attack aged 21 (20 years ago) and it has plagued me constantly and consistently, ever since... even now, as a recovering alcoholic 9+yrs sober and having changed diet and lost 6 stone/40kg in weight, it still afflicts me regularly and leaves me crippled physically and mentally
There is truly no pain like it, or the misery associated with it
Thank god for colchicine!!
My first bout made me mildly insane until I could get some meds. Try freezing it. Not just a cold pack, but pack it with bags of ice. Only thing that helps me.
I had gout in my left big toe when I was in the hospital a few years ago for an unrelated condition, and despite asking repeatedly to be tested for gout, was told that I was too young at 32 to get it and that it was just plantar fasciitis, despite the fact it was in the joint and not my arch. It was so painful I couldn’t walk. The cure apparently was to “keep massaging it.” The nurse who told me this then grabbed my foot and shoved her fist into my arch, attempting to massage the pain away.
She got kicked in the face.
That nurse deserved it. lol
I swear, some people should not be allowed to work in the medical field because if someone is asking to get tested for something, TEST THEM. Don't just ignore it and basically make the person think they're crazy.
That’s bullshit. I got gout at 23 when I was in some of the best shape of my life. Still confused how that happened
@joem9528
The human body is bizarre.
Recently I had to get tested for covid and turns out I had strep throat. No symptoms like coughing at all through the entire time I had it.
i got gout when i was 14 diagnosed when i was 17. I am 24 now
Gout is so painful that I was literally prepping a kitten to stuff up a hens ass to roast till the very moment he stated unequivocally that it did not cure gout.
Very funny

Ha! Reminds me of my brother's appendicitis. It hit while he was in basic training, having breakfast. He swears he cut a piece of a sausage link and before he could get it to his mouth, that knee-bending pain hit, and he never got the fork to his mouth, just woke up minus 1 appendix 😅
I miss my kitty.
@@Mark.o89 It's hard, isn't it. Time really does take the edge off. You just have to wait it out, it's all you can do. I really honestly believe that, I'll see my dad again some day, and I'll also be reunited with Lucky. Only problem is, my dad hated Lucky 🤣.
I have been tortured by gout, and it's the worst pain you can imagine. Gout can attack any joint, not just in the feet. And mine did, which threw the doctors off. Finally, I wondered if it could be cause as a side effect to some medications, so I went to work searching for side effects of the meds I took. Sur enough, Hydrochlorothiazide can cause gout. I was taking Hydrochlorothiazide. I stopped taking it, and it was like switching off a light, in this case a pain switch. Within two days, the gout was gone, and after 5 years, has never returned.
Gout sufferer here. Several bouts but thankfully last one was about eight years ago. The pain is such that a single light bed sheet covering the area is painful. That is how I describe the lain to others.

I had one gout flare up in my big toe. Felt like someone was rubbing tiny shards of glass into an open wound and then pouring salt on it while passing and electric current through it.
That's how my Nan described it.
charlie, You describe it accurately!
An old relative of mine had gout, and while he was cleaning his rifle to pass the time he accidentally fired it and blew off his toe. He described it as less painful than the gout he had blown off.
Cave Jhonson I don’t doubt it. Was probably a relief.
Cave Johnson I'm sorry for relative but at least he won't have gout in that toe anymore--a silver lining to that story!
Genetics plays a HUGE part in someone's likelyhood for getting gout flare ups and the severity of them it seems. Beer and seafood are big triggers for it I know. My ex is highly prone to gout flare ups and I watched him go through so many over the years we were together. Sometimes it would last for weeks or even months at a time, starting in one foot and eventually traveling to the other one before calming down, making him extremely irritable and barely able to walk the entire time. Sometimes it would even travel up to his ankles and knees as well. Gout is absolutely a punishment a wouldn't wish on even my worst enemy.
That is exactly what happens to me, it's kind of nice in a weird way to know I'm not the only one that happens to with the symptoms you described your ex has!! Wish I could talk to him ask what he does to help him
Yep in my family all the men have gout regardless of their diet - we all have to take allopurinol or else keep colchicine on hand at all times. My dad's a seriously active person (cyclist) who eats very little meat and barely drinks and he still gets attacks.
Doctors think I've got gout. I'm 31.
Ive been a chronic boozer for 15 years. The pain is unbearable at times. But I find it so hard to stop drinking. It's a pretty hellish cycle
My father has gout on his left ankle and is always on and off steroids. He never spoke about the pain, though, because the man would still go on mile-long runs with me 😟
EDIT: I'm almost positive that he NEVER ran with me during a flare-up. It's almost impossible for him to stand when his gout flares up and I doubt he would put his health at risk like that :)
That's actually really unhealthy because the uric acid crystals can cause permanent joint damage if the joint is used too much during a flare up.
My dad has gout in his right big toe and it randomly effects him so he never knows when he is going to hurt
His gout cant be that bad then because you cant even touch your foot to put on a sock let alone fitting the swollen up foot into a shoe in most cases. Hes luck to even be able to use his foot. Also HFCS is what triggers my attacks, i eliminated it from my diet and haven't had any major attacks since. Also when an attack occurs, fasting and drinking a bunch of water will help get over your attack much faster. Pass that on to your dad.
Lies🙄
Katherine Stickley your dads a true champ. Give him many hugs.
I used to have chronic gout that would alternate between big toes and occasionally an ankle. It was so debilitating but I beat it. I completely gave up refined sugar. It wasn't easy at first but I'm so much better off the sugar and I've been gout free for over six years now. It took a while to settle down (at least a year) but it worked. I can still drink as much beer as I like and eat whatever I want (except refined sugar) hopefully this helps someone. It certainly fixed me up.
For some reason I'm a little scared to try the diet of man named Rubberbladder.

Worst pain I've ever experienced in my life.
It felt like a broken bone with a bunch of shards of glass cutting into the muscles of my foot.
I had an extremely difficult time walking and the pain was constant. The slightest pressure was excruciating.

@@brianal7143 well I do.
In order to imagine what pain and suffering Gout brings with it: The hyperuricemia crystals tend to expad and grow in the shape of a needle. So gout is basically having a curled up hedgehog vacating in your joint.
My father has gout and it's plaguing him for a damn long time, there's periods where he has trouble walking and he used to have a walking stick.
I heard it's inheriditary so it's likely a family thing.

Understandable ma'am have a great day
Gout is largely genetic. I eat only a moderate amount of meat, don't drink alcohol at all, and only drink water with little added sugar in my diet. I also exercise daily and am at a healthy weight. I still suffered from high uric acid levels and gout attacks despite not following any of the things that would cause gout, and genetic testing has shown that I unfortunately have a gene that causes this high uric acid level. Thankfully allopurinol has relieved me of having anymore gout attacks in the future, but I'll have to take it for the rest of my life. Kind of a bummer.
Me too jefferson ye. I tried all sorts of changes to my diet, nothing worked.
same. vegetarian for 20 yrs. Allopurinol only thing that stopped it.
My dad just recovered from gout recently. When his feet was still swollen, he couldn't move from his bed. Extreme pain, he said.
... I really wouldn't want to experience such thing, but it's actually quite hard to avoid all those rich in purine food.
I’m only 25, I have had gout 3 or 4 times now in the past 3 years and let me tell you the first time I experienced it I woke up one morning and thought I broke my foot. My mom had to drive me to the emergency room bc it was on the right side of my foot and they said I had gout immediately. Legit cried for an hour or so til the pain got a little better
My first woke me up in the middle of the night, was 100% sure a rattle snake had bit my toe. My doc agreed to get me in that AM. I told him we'd have to meet at the hospital as I was sure that big toe was going to have to be removed. Hobbled into the examining room, he looked down at my foot, said, "You've got the gout", and he wrote me a scrip for colchicine.
I had gout once after a particularly boozy Christmas and New Year. I hadn't eaten meat in a year and went home to England to spend it with my family. Drinking every day, lots of sausages, bacon etc. It was the most painful thing I have ever experienced. Wouldn't wish it on my worse enemy. Insanely painful.

Gotta love ancient remedies. Heating up the foot could seemingly shutdown the kidneys and cause death. Doctor- Well at least he's cured of gout, my job is done.
no bullshit. When I had gout, I couldn't even stand having the overhead fan on in my room. The pressure from the air hurt like a hammer on my joint.
