    How have you found your winter range to be? Let me know!

      I find the winter range to be quite impressive. Although I live in The Netherlands, we have had some cold weather recently. Some days even averaged -5 Celcius. Our Model 3 is also a 2021 Long Range, albeit with 18 inch wheels. Our consumption overall (in the winter period) has been around 170 wh/km so like 273 wh/mile. That has had some below 0 days but mainly 0-7 Celcius. A/C is always on, usually 20 degrees and seat heating (and steering wheel) ofcourse. I must add that I don't floor the car, I am no slug, but there is no need to ''race'' since most cars are no competition anyways. Enjoyed this video, really like the in-depth road trips and it has put ''Broadway'' on our schedule! Cheers!

      I've found my range SUCKS in winter, this is purely down to me driving a lot less for leisure than I would in summer so at this time of year my journeys are mostly my work commute at 5.5 miles each way, and journeys to the shops which are literally 2.5 miles away which is never good for range, added to the rain increasing tyre rolling resistance and using heating more, I charge my car with my eyes closed, can't bare to look at the numbers!

      Hi Mark, I live about 110 miles from Norwich but my family also live in Norwich. I travelled up to see them Christmas Day, I managed to get to Norwich and then back to Thetford before having to stop off for a supercharger in Thetford so about 160 miles, nowhere near the estimated 300 miles on my long range model 3 :(

      I have the 60kwh LFP and I think the range stated is not miles away from reality, having only owned the car in the colder months, with a cross between city and motorway driving, I have average 245wh/mi. Full charge sets between 271 and 275 miles. Not sure if that information is useful to anyone.

      Awful since the latest update. Over 140 miles I’d never of used more than 40-50% pre update. Since the latest one, I can’t get it to use less than 60%. Very frustrating. (long range pre heat pump)

    Enjoyed that insight. I’m at 9000 miles in my M3LR in 4mths and loving it. A recent trip for me was from Glasgow to Newcastle in the pouring icy rain at night with the heater, wipers and lights on really gobbled the miles to the extent it got a bit nervy with only 25 miles left when I arrived home and the next supercharger being 1 mile from my home. (Wasn’t at 100% when I left). Overall not an issue and I love not having to de-ice the car and can drive off in a toasty car.

      Hey Matthew thanks for the comment yes I agree I have seen similar journeys where the range has gone very fast. (I was quite surprised during this one, as it wasn't too bad.) But when it's 0c it seems very very bad!

  • @15bit62

    I tend to find that winter range/consumption is dominated by the car aggressively heating the battery pack. But that is because almost all of my winter use is short journeys, so this happens every time i drive. And i live in central Norway, where our winter temperatures are consistently between -5 and -15C. Under those conditions my consumption is almost doubled. But if i go longer distance at those temperatures the consumption becomes a lot more sane, plus any supercharger stops will heat the battery and after that the efficiency improves again.

    • @MBrown
      @MBrown  2 роки тому

      Yes I bet Norways weather can really hit the Tesla, how do you find having an EV in those colder climates?

    • @15bit62
      @15bit62 2 роки тому

      @@MBrown Well the traction control is phenomenal, so it is by far the best car i've ever driven in the snow. It finds grip on every surface, including sheet ice. The heating also works fine down past -15C outside temperature, and pre-heating from the App de-ice's the windscreen and back window nicely, though not so much the side windows.
      Aside from the mental consumption figures for short journeys, the only real "problem" is that the door handles and windows ice up very easily. Pre-emptive spraying of WD40 or silicone oil everywhere helps a lot with that, but you can still come to the car and struggle to open the door, or find that the window won't go down when you open it. This obviously isn't a problem limited to Tesla, but the choice of flush door handles and frame-less doors definitely makes it worse. The rear view camera tends to get covered in crap, but that's hardly a Tesla-only problem again. I does make reverse-in superchargers a bit annoying, though i saw a guy with an X just before christmas who'd obviously trained his wife to jump out the car and clean the camera as he pulled up to the charger. That made me chuckle. Oh, and the auto-wipers are totally hopeless.
      Overall though, the 3 LR is an extremely good winter car in my view. Certainly the best one i've driven yet.

    The best thing about auto pilot, is when you may be searching your sat Nov or reaching for a bottle of water and having a sip. You can seriously drift at high speeds or not notice cars stopping in front within a split second, but the auto pilot stops this from happening. I also find my shoulders relax, when auto pilot is on, it's not perfect I have had a number of phantom braking moments. Plus the sat nav even with the update is still in need of work, but the preheated app control is the biz.

The performance is silly and it really does hold the road well (I am running winter tyres as well). I also love the practicality of it. Lots of space for the kids and their stuff haha. It's also remarkably comfortable, especially the seats which hold you well but are also supple. Best of all though has to be the running costs. I charge at home using Octopus Intelligent and my most expensive overnight charge was just over £2.50. Crazy!

  • @Xanthopteryx

    Yes, cheaper fuel but way more expensive to buy.
    I did the math here - in our case, it would go break even in 8-10 years. And if you have any battery problem... then add like 5-10 years more. SO BEV are NOT cheap, as people often say. And they have some advantages and some disadvantages, as all car types have.

    • @MBrown
      @MBrown  2 роки тому

      Yes definatly much more expensive to buy. However over my year I've gone from £4000 in Petrol to £230 for the year in Electic, plus no Road Tax or servicing costs. So big overall outlay but is cheaper year on year. (Plus if you own a business some good savings to be had, check my video on that.)

    • @Xanthopteryx
      @Xanthopteryx 2 роки тому

      @@MBrown Yes, if you drive A lot, that can pay off. But as an example, average distance travelled for a Swedish car is 15.000 km/year.
      So, everyone has to do their own (real world based) calculation and not believe everyone that says BEV are so cheap and you will save a lot!
      Because, it all depends...
      Of course we do not know what future has to come with but prices for fuel (diesel, petrol, electricity, ...) and tax situation is something unknown, but we do know that at least here in Sweden, electricity have been way too cheap for years, so it WILL rise (and so it has this winter!). And there will be more taxes on BEV. How else are they going to get the money they loose from petrol and diesel tax?
      Maybe kilometer tax.... maybe something else.
      So in the calculation, you have to consider stuff like this.
      And of course, some people buy car just because they like it or think its fun. That is why some have Feerari, Koenigsegg and all those super expensive cars that are really super expensive to drive. =)

    There used to be a little stall in the Norwich market place that served a dish with a hot pie and peas, It was the best lunch ever on a cold day :)
    Also, we went to the States just before Christmas and decided to use the Tesla this time. Started out from Redruth, Cornwall with 90%, stopped at Gordano for a top- up and something to eat, then topped up at the SC's at Gatwick. We got back 10 days later and had only lost just about 8 miles of range which i thought was amazing. We drove to Gordano again for a bite to eat and a top up then drove straight home. It was probably the most stress free airport drive we've ever done.
    I was also amazed at how much we could fit in the car, we did a lot of shopping over there so we came big with 4 massive holdalls, 2 rucksacks and also my wheelchair (non folding) It all fit in easily in fact we till had tons of room and didn't even need to use the Frunk. I think the total cost of Supercharging was about £50 where it normally cost around £160-£180 for fuel to do the same trip in the Macan.

    Always amazes me how many people think using the lights and radio/entertainment in an EV affects range, yet they own a table that can perform the entertainment function and that has a relatively tiny battery. The same to for lights. There a bicycle lights out there with massive illumination capabilities and again, they only need a small light batteries.
    What does affect the range of an EV is wind speed & direction plus the tyre drag on wet roads.
    If you are driving at 70 mph into a 20 mph headwind you are effectively have the same air resistance as driving at 90 mph. With an ICE you are producing loads of excess horsepower so the wind direction & speed has a far smaller effect on the MPG.

    • @MBrown

    Another great video Mark, I love being able to turn on the climate control remotely; I warm the car in the morning before setting off and also before I leave the office in the evening, it makes people really envious getting into their cold and frozen solid "ICE" vehicles, hehe. I normally use the exact same Supercharger, down to the same bay when available - I live 2 miles from it. Don't forget to pop into the hotel to register your VRM or you will get a nasty surprise in the mail; they also do good coffee. I have found that I have lost some range in my 2021 Model 3 in the cold weather, but only about 10-15% using and charging the car as I would in summer, but I suppose pre-heating the vehicle and keeping the heating on is taking a bit of the battery / but I guess that could be the same as cooling the car in summer... so I would say there is definitely some loss of range in the colder months compared to the warmer ones, but its not too dramatic.

    Dude, 7 degrees and no snow doesn't really count as winter :P At -15 degrees the range drops rapidly where the cars spends 10% battery on every short 10-15 min trip(mostly what my daily driving consists of) due to warming up the car etc. If the car is already warmed up the drop isn't nearly as significant though. I wish we had your winter climate in Norway! @@MBrown I’ve done it to mine and it’s spot on. Filled the front holes and used a stick on front number plate. For the rear, I simply took off the bracket and stuck a low profile number plate to where the plate initially was, looks much better.
