The Basics of Carolina Rig Fishing with Roland Martin

- Tackle innovation and new rigging methods make it easy to overcomplicate bass fishing, but the tried and true approaches remain excellent producers. The Carolina rig is a case in point. We caught up with legendary angler, Roland Martin (wired2.fish/Rol..., for a lesson in common-sense Carolina rigging using a handful of simple tackle.
From terminal tackle to plastic, Roland walks us through how to rig the affordable setup. And contrary to popular opinion, light line and extreme stealth isn't always a must to put quality bass in the boat. Martin explains why he doesn't shy away from a heavy braided mainline in certain situations.

I've been watching Roland Martin since I was a child. He used to have his own fishing show on Saturday's, after Cartoon Express and I NEVER missed an episode
Same here 👍👍👍
👍
Definitely!
I've come to appreciate the Carolina rig. One of my "all-around" rods with a spinning reel for most Arkansas water is set up with a Carolina rig, 10lbs braid and 6 lbs fluoro leader with a slip float with about 1/8-1/4oz of weight. Not the best for everything, but a good "only pick one rod for a trip" situation.
Thanks from new Zealand. We learned about soft plastic fishing through Berkley from you Americans. Most of us use spinning sets with 10lb braid and 20 lb fluorocarbon. But we aren't dragging it we cast ahead of the drift in the sea. Great to learn new techniques. Thank you
Roland is probably the best that has ever been. Great video.
Martin is a beast! Love his style of fishing! Thank you for sharing!
Wanted to know the setups and techniques for this rig and you knocked it out in less than 4 minutes, thanks.
Who dressed Roland up like a homie??
I was thinking the same! He definitely has the swag look going on! :)
The dude is a beast. He was 79 when this was filmed. He can hang and fish longer and harder than most 20 year olds -- I was totally awestruck. He transcends age and is a "I don't have time to bleed" guy. Yamamoto was handing hats out, he slapped that flat bill on and and went bass fishing 😂.
@@Wired2Fish that is awesome!
The man is a legend! I have been watching him since the late 80s but didn’t realize he is 80yo now. He really is a beast. God bless him!
That’s a Rolex
Carolina rig will always be the best structure presentation, especially on highland reservoirs. Loved to see your take on this presentation👍
Good deal, appreciate you tuning in Hunter.
My son loved this depth finder. He's used it for ice fishing and on his 14ft boat. Works well and is fairly easy to use. Saw fish on the depth finder, caught fish in that spot. Can't ask for more, except maybe an automatic fish cleaning option :)
The Carolina rig is my goto. Great video
Good stuff Roland! 💯
Been using that rig for a long time. Great video
Thanks 👍
Somewhere, a fish is crying because Roland Martin called him average.
Love fishing that Rig 🎣🐟
Love this guy
Good stuff!
Awesome video
Glad you enjoyed it
I like a carolina setup pretty good but the texas rig is myost favorite
Cool video
Haha when he started talking about how complicated and fancy that worm is I assumed this video was 10 years old lol theres ALOT of guys pouring worms just like that in their garage and it really doesnt take a special mold, that worm can be made with the same senko mold that makes a solid color worm...
It's actually not a triple injection. It's a dual injection laminate with a separate tail mold. If you think that's crazy Mr Roland Martin, you should see coreshot senko's and coreshot baits in general unique as hell and you will never see any bait brand make em only custom bait makers like myself make em. They take 2-3x longer sometimes than making a regular senko but the results are crazy. Check out my shorts if you want to see what coreshot is.
Works great doesn’t fray easy cuts hard which is great really tuff I used 10 lbs!!
that's a beautiful body of water
Im from germany, fishing for perch. How do I have to fish with the c rig? Just drag it? How fast?
@gloom thank you so much. This also works for perch?
"It's not a big fish."
It's about the same size as the biggest I've ever caught 😅
how is the carolina rig better than the drop shot rig?
It's not better, it's not worse... it's entirely different for different situations. That's like asking how a texas rig is better than a crankbait.
@@19empire85 when do you think is best to use Carolina rig ? And when to use drop shot?
It's probably based to.much on your fishery to give a real answer but for me a dropshot is more of a smallmouth or open water thing and a c rig is more of a largemouth around structure thing but I've honestly only thrown a c rig a handfull of times, and it absolutely has a place for smallmouth and in open water, it's just not how I've used it... yet. I mean technicly anything can be used about everywhere given that it will get through without snagging, sometimes its just about giveing them a look at something different. One is a bait directly on bottom and one is suspended, that alone is a big difference.
@@19empire85 that's the main thing is one is directly on the bottom and one is suspended. I find there are less bites when bait is directly on the bottom.
@@ol2533 I agree sometimes, but when smallmouth are on gobys here on lake ontario sometimes right on the bottom is best for sure.
Les Claypool anyone?
Don't you ever use your helicopter lure?
👍👍
That looks like a lead weight.
Roland is a "G" lol
I loose every fish with offset hook
Did roland borrow the hat from his grandson?
So you’re not going to actually show us how to hook up the rig🤦🏿♂️
They just can't keep it basic 😂😂😂🐟🎣🌊💦
65lb braid? Why lol
Americans love to just skim them over the top of the water on the retrieve😂
Big fail. I clicked to learn how to make a Carolina rig. You failed.
The title reads "The Basics of Carolina Rig Fishing," not how to make a Carolina Rig. Here's that video "How to Rig and Fish a Carolina Rig" --> ua-cam.com/video/LSUcMtyJN44/v-deo.html.
@@Wired2Fish Alrighty then.
That is a beautiful lake. Where was this filmed??
Yes, it's an amazing place. Lake Baccarac Mexico!
👍👍
