HBA on a HPE DL560 G10 and Raid on a HPE DL380 G9 - 1263

- In this video I try to show you how to configure 4 new Samsung SSD´s in a raid on a HPE DL560 G10, but as it turned out that there was no raid controler in that server, We got a look at how a server with an HBA-ish see the drives. But then moved to a HPE DL390 G9 with a raid controller to also do that.

For 3$ a month, you get an extra weekly "What's UP" update video. Just for my Patrons. The Support I resave on patreon is all used on stuff to make interesting videos on UA-cam.
My PlayHouse is a channel where i will show, what i am working on. I have this house, it is 168 Square Meters / 1808.3ft² and it is full, of half-finished projects.
I love working with heating, insulation, Servers, computers, Datacenter, green power, alternative energy, solar, wind and more. It all costs, but I'm trying to get the most out of my money, and my time. - Наука та технологія
Nice analogy with the cleaning lady… 🙃
Well the raid controller just takes care of the tedious job, and does it very well :-)
I've recently picked up dl380p gen8 extremely cheaply including the ILO licence. Sadly, discovered the built-in raid controller requires a licence to unlock raid features, so be looking for raid controller as HP discontinued the licences for 'em, and thanks for making parts available that's really awesome of you considering how difficult getting these parts are.
if you google around you can "find" a licence key .. .apparently ..lol
Hope you find your KEY features :-)
@@cyberjack HPE RAID Controllers SUCK!
Oh you made me smile this morning 😊 I also eat my lasagna in my personal data center.
In fact .. I also get questions about why I host things at my place instead of in a regular data center. Well the reasons are many. Won’t go into that here.
I like your content. Stay safe.
It is fun to do stuff, that you normally can't do..
great video. I have moved over from hp back to dell. at sum point i wil be putting the DL380p on eBay at sum point.
Hi Pringles
Thank You very much! glad you liked the video :-)

👍I admire you very much you are very talented hardworking beautiful work
Thank you so much 😀
Thank you for an interesting video 👍
Glad you enjoyed it
hahaha you got me at the Lasagna :)
I thought it was funny :-)
This P440ar with 2Gb Cache and BBU is a good one. Very fast and stable. You could play around with the cache-ratio to get the most out of it. But first install the latest firmware on the server and the controller. (if you have access to a server which is still in support, you can go to hpe support center and download all the needed updates for this one which is not in support anymore). Updating the controller works really well in a Live-Windows (f.e. hiren's boot cd - running from a usb-stick)
Yes I should update..
@@MyPlayHouse perhaps you could try another raid-controller in the DL560 and compare the features/speed. an adaptec/microsemi would be nice...
More lasagne talk next time ..that looked delicious
:-) it was nothing spicial..
Hi Morten.
You would be a fun guy to work alongside.
Your company office is missing out.
Well we have a lot of fun at work,, and I have some really great colleagues.
you managed to get your hands on a DL560 nice one very nice one. It's yours to keep? If yes try to get your hands on a P816i controller :) it has some very nice features included they are somewhat expensive and hard to get currently,
Must come from his work, since that what they seem to have in their data centre
It´s not really my brand, but it is a very capable server.
nice video

I my home lab (HPE gen9 and some gen10 gear) I still run SSD RAID1, but general advice is for years 2022 and 2023 to not use RAID on SSD, but use ZFS/noraid instead. As VMWare is unable to do those then I have not tried that and on Linux side I have not wondered that far as well. Likely will test it out.
You got to understand that people like to talk. And in social media they are given a chance.
My advice to you is that you take into consideration WHO you listen to and in what forum.
Maybe a certain UA-camr isn’t the most reliable source for what is best for you. (Not talking about this channel now.)
Ask a storage person who actually works with storage. Not just someone who’s interested and shouts about it.
Have a nice day.
There are lots of cases where HBA and ZFS is a good choice. But a Raid card does the same thing at your GPU,, it off loades your CPU.
High end SAN like DELL EMC Isilon,, use two middle range Xeon CPU's just to make 15 spinning drives available and perform well on their modified ZFS storage system. It can do a lot,, but it needs a lot of CPU power.
👍very good movie
I need a new villain,, this one has had it :-)
hp makes a proprietary nvme adapter for their enterprise systems called the "hp turbo drive quad pro" which lets you put 4 nvme drives in with or without raid and are bootable. into a full height X16 slot, if you ever need something else to play around with get 1 off ebay. I got one for my dl 360 g7 but moved it to my z840 with 4- 2 tb drives in it non raid.
and if you are using esxi in your homelab, you could reactivate nvme-support (take the driver files from an older release of esxi) and use any nvme-drive as a really fast local storage. I use this option with a pcie-nvme-card from raidsonic and a kingston nv1.
Interesting card.
hp 8000 - i recently upgraded one - got it from goodwill, hp 8300 are decent 3rd gen machines and cheap but z440 are probably best option for older gen rebuilders - supports lots of ram, quad channel and also can boot from nvme which is on price parity with reg ssd so why not - don't leave performance on the table unused for best and easiet compat people should goto debian and use sw raid (mdadm) - it makes easy raid - no proprietary sw and it can be easily transferred from machine to machine - no hba IT mode funny business needed, get the newest version of z440 mb to avoid problems - the only caveat - and get a power adapter for a modern ps

@@MyPlayHouse I think you should do a small and med biz (smb sector) special comprised of about 8 pc - dual (ha) opnsense, 2 nas, ws, 3 cluster nodes, sniffer box(24/7 pkt cap_) and a pi hole --- why do this? you can do it for cheap nowadays, you would learn some things and also have some fun - simple is not easy and so much of your stuff is so datacenter orientated moving down a tier would be more applicable to wider range of people - and the algo - don't forget that - just a suggestion- it could be a grand opus 5-10 video special if you want - total cost could be less than 600 kroner if you shop around - use older hp stuff, maybe even give it away
I got a HPE SSD 3840 GB which crystaldisk doesnt show any info on. Not even the temperature. But its working perfectly fine in my windows 11 pc. Its in RAID 0 together with a samsung SSD 3840 GB. The samsung ssd got the full crystaldisk information.
Well HPE likes there own firmware better..
From my point, the Onboad intel motherboard chipset include PCH/SCU Controller function, like hp document call it 'Integrated SATA Controller', Host Bus Adapter(HBA) is most like the extend HDD Controller. So the onboard HDD controller should not call HBA.
Maybe,, but it does the same thing. I do not think the onboard controller does SAS drives,, but have not tried that.
@@MyPlayHouse HPE onboard RAID use intel SCU, so it only support sata disk. Only install the H2xx or P2xx HBA/Raid card could use with SAS driver.
So what is the read write speed of this ssd solution compared to sas 15k disks?
Is it faster? How much?
it is towards 10x faster on SSD
Does the Server make more noise with the non HPE SSD's? Because i am also looking into it for an DL380P G8 but i am wondering if the fans will be running at full speed then. Because those HPE SSD's are very very expensive.
Use only non HP ssd's without problems. On hp g8 and g9. Also I run controller in hba mode.
I think this was about the same sound with or without non SSD's
Hi Morten
I don't suppose you have the connector for a dl380 gen8 from the board to the GPU (10 pin to 8 pin)? If you do would you mind awfully letting me know which pins go where?
Also, if you have a spare and are willing to post it I'd happily consider buying one :)
Best
Greg
They are available on Ebay : www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2380057.m570.l1313&_nkw=HPE+10pin+to+8+pin&_sacat=0
@@MyPlayHouse Massive thanks Morten, one ordered. After much arguing with the BIOS I now have GPU passthrough working, on booting the VM I get "PLEASE POWER DOWN AND CONNECT THE PCIe POWER CABLE(S) FOR ALL GRAPHICS CARDS" so the VM sees the GPU and knows that the GPU needs more power. For now the system has a GTX 1050Ti in but if it works once the cable comes I'll look for something better.
It's the journey that teaches us, not the destination.
thank you for video inf, if i use non HP SSD or HDD in this server is it true Raid Controller will not alert you if SSD or HDD fail ?
I do not know is it would alert you,, but I think it would work.
@@MyPlayHouse thank you
You are welcome :-)
thank you for video, can i use Seagate Or Western digital HDD 3.5 in this server
I am not sure about the DL560 G10,, if it takes 3.5",, but the DL380 model comes in versions for 3.5" drives.
@@MyPlayHouse thank you
You are most Welcome :-)
Onboard hbas are always a good choice lol
Not sure I follow... :-/
Do Someone know „good“ 2.5“ HDDs with like 1 or 2tb SATA. I want to use them in my homelab storage Server
I like HGST drives,, If I can get them.

btw: has anyone figured out how to get ilo4 to connect to smtp-servers with tls?
not me.
