- Both venom (2:25) and rapier (26:44) class championships completed. Rapier is identical with venom, except for faster speed and some graphical backround details (time of day). Single race of unlocked 'firestar' track run at end the of the video.
Saturn version has set 20fps limit whereas PSX version should run in half a decent frame rate (30fps). Further compared, there are some graphical differences and some exclusive audio tracks.
Gameplay-wise Saturn version is bad. Lack of frame rate makes it difficult estimating proper timing for turns and control response. In some races like Greenland, it's almost impossible to make some slow turns without crashing a wall, even after breaking speed to almost zero. Not sure how badly level design affected gameplay in the PSX version. Presumably the Saturn version should be faster even with sucky frame rate. I also dislike the bounce effect when you grace a wall, sometimes it leaves you bouncing from wall to wall for a long time in narrow places (such as tunnels).
I think sequels quickly improved on design, but wouldn't recommend trying Wipeout 2097 for Saturn as it apparently runs with less than 17 frames / second. Saturn is able to run 3D games with 30fps so I'd accuse Wipeout games being poor ports compared to Playstation originals.
Sorry about the bumper cam view for those who don't like it, never learnt to play racing games from third-person view.

Crazy this is from 1995-1996. Got the saturn that year when I was 9 yrs old, Wipeout was my first game on the system. Good memories 👍
Same here,I was also 9 yrs old, everything about this video takes me back, this was the 2nd game i had,Virtual Fighter being the first along with the sample cd. The soundtrack is pure gold
I was 15 and Wipeout was my first game on Playstation in 1995. Still love this game. Have had it basically on every Playstation sense. Currently have PS4 Pro w/ Wipeout Omega in 4k HDR on 5.1 living room setup. It is also fully supported with PS VR which is amazing. Being able to sit inside these crafts and see the buttons all around you is amazing. Omega is just remastered but I have fine with it for many years to come. 4k 60fps, VR support 3 games in 1. 28yrs later.
I got the hang of this version eventually and, I think due to the extra effort being put in, ended up really liking this port over the PS1 version. I think it still looks great and the soundtrack is fantastic.
N64 port looks so much better
Love this game. Good graphics and great music.
Why are you complaining? It's amazing that they even managed to pull off these detailed 3D graphics on a Saturn and keep the framerate high.
I'd say the framerate is just due to this being a rushed port - the Saturn could do better.
Wipeout is a game that has been programmed for the PS1 for the capabilities of the PS1 and in support of the architecture of the PS1. The Saturn version is indeed very successful if we consider that these two consoles do not have the same architecture.
Framerate is not very high though :/ hovering between 15 and 18fps instead of a constant 30 fps on PS1.
@@youuuuuuuuuuutube and the 2097 version is same..
Killer racing game, I love it. I’m playing it right now. The winter track is just knocking me silly. That’s a tough kne.
Anti gravity technology at its best wish it was here now. Ahead of its time and its only Oct 2019. Best version ever .😎😎😎😎 venom class rules. 👍👍👍
10:22 🎶🎶🎶 that was my favorite track. This game was so 🔥🔥, and still is. Good old days
Sega Saturn!!!! Hell yeah!!!!!+
Well I think this version looks like a damn good game regardless and that soundtrack is a thing of pure beauty! Fantastic upload and gameplay demonstration! :)
Saturn game-speed version runs faster (in spite of frame rate), I prefer the Saturn handling, but enjoy the PSX graphics on Wipeout more
I believe the house that ported it to Saturn had a bit of a reputation for porting things very quickly, so SEGA used to set them ridiculous time limits on deadlines.
I think the Saturn can do decent 3D if in the right hands, like the unreleased Shenmue beta and Virtua Fighter 2, but a lot of it is down to lack of decent Software APIs from SEGA.
I'm willing to bet if SEGA put more time and effort into their development kits and APIs, we would have seen a lot nicer things from the Saturn a lot earlier than we did.
Funnily enough I enjoy the Saturn graphics more I must have got used to them because I love the weapon smoke trails on the Sega Saturn version although the PS1 game runs at a higher frame rate I always find myself playing the Saturn version of the game.
I also much prefer the Saturn sound track which is funny as it's missing the licensed tracks
the lobotomy trilogy, panzer dragoon series, mech warrior 2, need for speed, street racer extra are also good examples of good looking 3d games on the saturn.
Considering the limitations of the Saturn, this is a great port!
Wow, this is a must have game on Saturn, thx a lot for your video!
Try the following:
1) Get a US Saturn.
2) Mod it for imports.
3) Purchase a PAL copy of WipEout 2097 (WipEout XL for US folks).
4) Play on US Saturn.
WipEout 2097 was never released on Saturn in the US as Sony had WipEout XL as a PSone exclusive.
Running the PAL version on a modded US console will net you NTSC graphics and an approximately ~16% boost in speed since it was optimized for PAL, but not NTSC output.
It's pretty much the fastest WipEout experience you're going to get.
Yeah I tried it and I think it plays a little too fast however there is an optimised Japanese version of the game all of the menu's are in English so it's best to play that version if not playing on a Pal console
Nerd
No thanks. I’ll just get the Japanese version instead.
You dont need to mod it if you can get an action replay.
@@dylanrichards8414 That's softmodding
1 of the most awesome games!
je l ai sur saturn et playstation ca reste un must !!c est du delire avec la music😀
Childhood
I still like this game, even if the playstation version has a better framerate.
Do you play these ganes on a emulator? or do you use a capture card on the original console?
My Saturn videos are played on SSF emulator and using saves between levels. FPS should be similar to original Saturn console.
@@einokeino303 ok thx
Kinda weird that a PlayStation series was once on a Sega system.
Because, Psygnosis and PSY-Q created SDK and HDK for Saturn and PlayStation.
Didn't this version leave out a glitch in the PS1 version?
WipeOut: a shameless remake of Bullfrog's Hi-Octane. It did a few things better -- notably the graphics, engine performance, and colours; also more extensive courses to match the high speed racing. The music here was also produced to a far higher quality. Still, without heavy use of weapons the whole thing is remarkably tame in comparison to the bloodshed and raw adrenaline of Hi-Octane. The screaming, ever-alternating pitch of engines redlining and sound of chainguns chattering a deadly serenade... ah, those were the days. Hi-Octane was absolutely epic with 6 players over LAN.
Checking Wikipedia: both games were released about the same time, Wipeout few months before Hi-Octane. Agreed the games are very similar in concept. PC version of Hi-Octane is so much more enjoyable to play than Saturn version of Wipeout. Smooth SVGA graphics, better level designs and importantly, more aggressive as you said :) Music was perhaps one of the most disappointing aspects of Hi-Octane. Sadly I never got to play that one over LAN. I believe the Saturn port also has frame rate issues.
einokeino303 Interesting fact about the dates, and I see they made Hi-Octane to “fill a quarter that didn't have enough revenue”. That's a pretty epic piece of filler!
MediaFilter Proves that you don't need years to make a great game when you have ideas, skills and and a completed engine at your disposal.
Aton Martell Well... it's like comparing apples to oranges. Rollcage is traction physics, Hi-Octane was compared with Wipeout was because they're both hover physics, released around '96/'97. Rollcage is more comparable to Re-Volt (both '99) in being traction-physics heavy. P.S. The only 90's game I recall that had various sorts of physics in play was Big Red Racing, which had everything from monster trucks to UFOs to boats. Not a bad little game, with good LAN play as well.
einokeino303 I'm watching this vid again a good while on, after a lot more work on my own OpenGL engine, and following my initial post I have to say - I'm not sure what Wipeout's performance was like at the time, but if this engine reflects performance on baseline hardware of the day, I would rather adapt Wipeout's code to Hi-Octane's design i.e combat, than work with the Hi-Octane engine to try to improve it. You're right about the frame rate: I remember Hi-Octane being dog slow on my 486DX2-66 back then (got far better on a Pentium-90, but then what didn't?). The rate was heavily dependent on the amount of flak being tossed around the map - understandable in a software renderer but still not something you want in a real-time LAN action game. But then Bullfrog was always strong on gameplay, maybe less so on engines when you look at baseline performance of stuff like Black & White, Magic Carpet and Dungeon Keeper - not so good. Who knows, maybe the Wipeout engine would have suffered as badly under load, but from watching this I get the sense that things like LoD were handled far more intelligently, and that there were smarter optimisations all round.
First play
20fps vs 30fps of the PS1 original. Not a great port.
PS1 version is better.
Weird, I always just liked this one better that the PS version. Don't know why exactly. It always just seemed, or felt, 'better' to play to me!
This was my favourite version. I suppose in the end it's all subjective.
