I don't think kids nowadays can properly understand how huge a shift it really was. As a 14 year old going from playing 2D Mario on the SNES, to buying the PSX and WipEout on launch in september 1995. It absolutely blew my mind. Suddenly you had in your bedrom this crazy game with cutting edge 3D graphics, a mature, dystopian atmosphere and a killer licensed soundtrack. I mean, at that time I didn't even know techno as a genre existed! It felt like a piece of the future, it really did. The game single handedly got me into the clubbing scene, DJing and graphic design. What a wonderful, wonderful time it was.
I remember it well. I worked in a casino back then, and I used to go back home after a night shift and ignite the PS1 and play Wipeout (and DOOM) until sunrise. It wasn't until 1998 when I got my own PS1 and then it was TombRaider II. When I got my first PC in 2002, it was all about Quake 3 online. Good times.

I've yet to play this first entry, but I have played 2097, and 3: Special Edition. The former is solid, and the latter is a masterclass of racing game design.

September 1995, the launch of the PlayStation = legendary memories of Wipeout. And Wipeout 2097 was a legendary sequel. 25 year on, it's shocking how fast time goes.
Presentation of ps music is music to my ears, listen to them many times and never tired I hear it. WipeOut was one of the games with that extreme my ps1 along with Tekken and Ridge racer, better impossible to baptize such trio machine.
I love the plunge into the tunnel on the first track. This game is one of the most nostalgic games for me. I absolutely sucked at games, so I'm pretty sure the first track was the only track I ever got to play. The vehicle they used was also the one I would always pick for no reason other than it was red and yellow
This is one of the first games I got for my Playstation along with Resident Evil. I played the hell out of this. I love the whole series. Loving Omega Collection now on PS4.

+Lucas Boyle It's an Analog twist-like Pad from Namco. There's also a clone of it from Interact called the UltraRacer (which I have)...both make the turns in WipEout much easier, smoother and more natural to play the game using the NeGcon/UltraRacer.
the wipeout vehicle's graphics look like rally cars and their shape is perfect, I love the music in this game, if thy recreated this game in 4k without changing to much of the looks of the craft or courses or the music, keep the soundtrack for sure, I'd buy it and a new console to play it, maybe a special wipeout controller?
Well the playstation 4 has the newest version called Wipeout Hd collection and the PlayStation 4 has a VR connecting device 600 bucks and you can play this in VR as well on playstation VR
Pilot was ridiculous. The whole world starts spinning with every manoeuvre and bump. would have liked to use it because I was killing it on rapier class but it was to punishing if you made a mistake.

+Zontar82 did you play Wip3out on PAL or NTSC? I played a ton of the North American version and it had an insta-kill quake weapon bug, which I always wondered if it was present in the PAL version. Also the manual was printed in god-awful light cyan text on a white background. But otherwise the game was awesome!
Maybe it was just a quirk of the NTSC version, but if you got hit by the Quake it would sometimes do 80-100% damage. This could happen in both split screen or link mode.
For me the second was and is the best. Wipeout 3 was bit more polished but added nothing new, the design was not as inspired and it started to get this "copy of a copy of a" feeling
@gameotaku The second game is good, but has a few bad design choices, doesn't control very well, and a somewhat unstable framerate. 3 is the better game, simply because those excessively dark tunnels are gone.
I think I used to have this game as a kid, or at least something VERY similar, also triangle-like cars that were afloat, you also had abilites like dropping nails or so on
Let's not forget to give love to The Designers Republic, which contributed on all graphic design on the game, including packaging, visual branding, iconography, etc.
It’s also notoriously hard as well. Better keep up and take the riskier path or you will not see the other opponent ships for the rest of the race, or worse, fail to qualify.
They don't make them like they use to. Does anyone else get that feeling where you wish these style of games were back again? So one minute you'd play this then later maybe a game of cool boarders and so on?
That dystopian feel is what I felt was missing in later games. The original trilogy, at least the first two, had a very distinct cyberpunk feel. The later sequels almost feel to smooth, and that's including the soundtrack. The rawness of the original game is gone. Still love the omega collection though - I only wish they would create a proper new one for the PS5!
I had much fun playing the PS1's Wipeouts with a NegCon. It seemed like a perfect fit to me: A futuristic game with a futuristic, unconventional controller - as if both were meant for each other. Worked great. :)
Ah this game brings back so many memories for me when I got my playstation a few weeks after launch but I remember my friends mum let me order it out of her catalogue so I could pay weekly it had 3 games. This, Mortal Kombat, and jumping flash two memory cards and 2 controllers for £379 took me ages to pay of at £5 a week but man I thought I was such a badass 😅😅
When we played this at Psygnosis, it was interesting to see that most people who had a driving licence and drove cars or rode motorbikes would play in cockpit, and those who didn't would play looking down on the ship.

The whole Sony + Psygnosis + Wipeout intro still sends shiver down my spine, almost 25 years later...
And the first time I heard about Psygnosis was a movie game tie-in.
Still also gave me tons of thrills even in 2024. The Sony + Psygnosis Intro Screens still iconic.😊

The creators were said to have been inspired by Mario Kart, whilst drunk. The name “WipEout” comes from the song “Wipe Out” by the Surfaris.

The Saturn version wasn’t terrible but it was typical of conversions of PS1 games at the time. I believe it only used one of the Saturn’s processors.

This is played from the pilot POV, I always played from the outside POV. I found the pilot POV distracting and dizzying

I always turned it on when I let people try it in the shop, then watched as they did backflips and shit while trying to turn. It was awesome! :o)

i never noticed before watching your longplay that the background music is the same as in Destruction Derby.
Don’t know how many people realized this, but you could put the PlayStation disc in your CD player and listen to the soundtrack straight away
