Also, don't you need some sort of spring or other mechanism to keep pressure on the moving nut, so that the threaded rod doesn't move it to the open position?

After commenting on Your video, i remembered that many work benches, including the most sturdy ones were made of pine entirely - even the leg vices (except the screws), so nothing wrong there - the vice can be made of soft wood and used successfully. Вряд ли полгайки с одной стороны способны гарантированно удержать болт от проскальзывания. Даже в цельной гайке силы трения со временем приводят к стиранию резьбы. Взяв за основу идею, я бы продумал, как бы использовать по полгайки с двух сторон.

Really nice skills and ideas here , but one thing about the safety factor needs to be explained to the inexperienced woodworker. Lifting out a peice on a table saw mid cut is a very dangerous game. Thanks for listening 🙂
