Thomas Earl Petty (October 20, 1950 - October 2, 2017) was an American singer, songwriter, and guitarist. He was the leader and frontman of the rock bands Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and Mudcrutch and a member of the late 1980s supergroup the Traveling Wilburys. He was also a successful solo artist.
Over the course of his career, Petty sold more than 80 million records worldwide, making him one of the best-selling artists of all time. His hit singles with the Heartbreakers include "American Girl" (1976), "Don't Do Me Like That" (1979), "Refugee" (1980), "The Waiting" (1981), "Don't Come Around Here No More" (1985) and "Learning to Fly" (1991). Petty's solo hits include "I Won't Back Down" (1989), "Free Fallin'" (1989), and "You Don't Know How It Feels" (1994).
Petty and the Heartbreakers were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002. Petty was honored as MusiCares Person of the Year in February 2017 for his contributions to music and for his philanthropy. He also acted; he had a recurring role as the voice of Lucky Kleinschmidt in the animated comedy series King of the Hill from 2004 to the show's conclusion in 2009.
Petty died of an accidental drug overdose in 2017 at the age of 66, one week after the end of the Heartbreakers' 40th Anniversary Tour.

This one is very special to me. I wanted so badly to go to this show but it was on the holy Sabbath. It was a Friday night show just 3.5 miles from my house. No way I could sacrifice Shabbos for Tom as much as I love him and am obsessed with him. I found another way. I drove up to some place near Buffalo, NY and saw him there. Turned out to be a nice get away. I put a mattress in the back of my Ford Explorer and we slept at a camp site and saw Niagara Falls for the first time. Niagara Falls and Tommy Petty, two great wonders of the world. Got to the show but we didn’t have tickets. Told my wife no worries, I’ll scalp. No scalpers. Show is sold out. They wouldn’t sell me a general admission ticket. No worries I stood by one of the entrances and asked the fans coming in if anyone had an extra ticket to sell. After asking no less than a thousand people I had 2 tickets for me and my wife. And our donors refused to be paid for their extra tickets. They were just happy to help. It was a great show. A few months later, on my birthday Tom passed away. Thanks for the gift of this show. Never thought I’d see him in Newark.

Just realised, Tom died 4/5 months later. You can clearly see the hip problem here and elsewhere. He was a stubborn guy who just wanted the stage more than almost anything else. Unfortunately it’s his undoing, a simple procedure would have probably sorted the hip out
    Sadly missed by all🎸🌏

I agree 100%. It breaks my heart to hear people with half the story paint him out to be some kind of dope fiend drug addict. His own wellbeing was his last priority, which was obviously a mistake, but his reasons were as selfless as they come.

It is so interesting when you watch the video in Oakland when the lights are flashing and he runs up the steps and gets the peace sign. and he places it and of course the chest with the hat. The greatest entry of a hat ever in the history of a video. at this time with the lights and him having to be so careful because of his cracked hip. and all the movement on Benmont and Mike. And everyone knows why it is happening. And then when him passing just very very short weeks after this. Just. Shows the intense love that this man had for Music. And for the people that loved him and the group as they grew older. And the audience grew older. End it didn't matter. This year friggin joy is there. Pain and all the joy is there. And this is why RIPTP has even more relevance today than ever. Everyone take care. we made it through the jerk midterm elections. Tom would have a lot to write about if he were alive today with how screwed up everything is. But I guess he covered that an American plan part B

I have watched some really decent documentaries on his being urged to cancel the tour, but he said there was no way in hell. No way. And he talked about the pain. Left him when he was on stage. But of course the final crap happened and it was just too much. He gave it his all. And he gave a crap. Far better than we can say a lot about what’s going on right now. I’m in Florida. Need I say more. Gail in Central Florida, May 21, 2023

He was playing with a broken hip and taking painkillers to deal with it. He should have canceled the Tour and taken care of his health first! Instead it cost him his life. The Tour could have waited and been postponed. His life was more important than any Tour. It’s too late now. I hope you’re all happy now. I’m not because he’s gone! Bad decisions lead to bad Outcomes.

@@cbes-lr5hs Yes, It was his choice but it cost him his life. He didn’t get the Hip taken care of on time. His fans could wait a year until he had the operation and recovered. Then he would resume touring. Instead he’s dead now.
      Is that a better outcome?
I don’t think so. He made a costly mistake.
