  • How to use the pattern tracer on my prototype wood lathe. This is a work in progress and while it is very usable I am hoping to make it improve on the design - Your new ideas are very welcome!

Good show fella. Your skills are spot on and you admit to where 'you' believe your going wrong to make sure we dont. Big thanks.

Definitely! There is always a better way and you seldom do everything right the first time. And thank you for the positive comment!

I think you have done well for a first attempt. Have given me some ideas that I want to try myself. Post again if you find some more tips to improve the process.

Boy your lathe has a lot of pulley sizes on that motor to change the speeds, really nice selection, like your tracer pattern. We used to run True Trace hydraulics stylist controller tracing aluminum parts cutting raw material on a 2 headed Bridgeport mill in the 1970's early 1980's. Lance & Patrick. We know nothing about wood work, nothing good comes from wood for these two micro machinists. We honor people like you with the knowledge to work with the grains the flows of the wood workers world.

Very cool... hydraulics stylist! I like it... has me thinking. I thought about making a metal pattern and having the styles conducting but it's complicated because of speed. If you have the lateral speed constant and steep sided recess in your pattern the cutter would plunge into the work too fast. I think CNC is the best solution... maybe I can figure it out. It's true that woodworking has it's own challenges but so does metal. I've been woodworking a lot longer than I've been metalworking. To be honest, working with metal has given me a more disciplined approach to woodworking. Thanks for your kind words!

About the pulleys. It would be nice to have one slower speed for large diameters but for most woodworking it needs to be fast. With that said, the highest speed is ridiculously fast. So fast that I worry about the tapered roller bearings losing their grease. They are not sealed.

@@WinkysWorkshop I don't understand the need of the rotating pattern tracer, which also seems to be too big in diameter, pre-empting tracing fine details.
to avoid friction and snags, I would polish the edge of the pattern, maybe even wax or otherwise lubricate it
then for the tracer, just a polished 2 mm piece of stainless rod, and for rigidity, much shorter than your current tracer.
whatever, keep up the good work and creativity
and yes, CNC would be better.

@@satxsatxsatx - It's actually the same diameter is the cutter which is what you need. It made a big improvement going left to right as it helped push the cross slide back out of a dip in the pattern. But I agree, it's not ideal and does not help at all going right to left.

Is the turning tool human powered, or is the movement through that motor device?

    There are ways , & there are other ways ! Biggest 2 letter word I know is "IF" . . . ;)
    * If your process had 2 'modes' , you could rough in with a much larger tool , then detail with the smaller one .
    * If not for the nature of wood grain , a rubber / polyurethane roller on your stylus motor could 'bite' into the pattern edge to help climb out of the deeper recesses.
    * If you were independently wealthy , adding another Horse to the driving end , & using a form tool instead of a pattern to trace would be a SNAP ! ( depending on part size)
Depending on how many of a given part is being made, methodology should be 'adaptive' to either produce the quantity in the fastest time , with the best quality . . .
Solutions come from inspiration, as well as frustration from repetitive tasks !
Hand cranking all the motions into the pattern looks like it works well enough , though the idea of a 'free floating' cutter mechanism might be easier to use ? Just a few ideas.
Good work leads to great work , with enough practice ! "V"

Wow... thanks for the detailed comment... yeah, I don't need to pour thousands $$ into this but its would be nice to make it trace more effectively.
