    Sports Hernia Diagnosis
    What Is A Sports Hernia?
A sports hernia is tearing of the transversalis fascia of the lower abdominal or groin region. A common misconception is that a sports hernia is the same as a traditional hernia. The mechanism of injury is rapid twisting and change of direction within sports, such as football, basketball, soccer and hockey.
The term “sports hernia” is becoming mainstream with more professional athletes being diagnosed. The following are just to name a few:
    Torii Hunter
    Tom Brady
    Ryan Getzlaf
    Julio Jones
    Jeremy Shockey
If you follow any of these professional athletes, they all seem to have the same thing in common: Lingering groin pain. If you play fantasy sports, this is a major headache since it seems so minor, but it can land a player on Injury Reserve on a moments notice. In real life, it is a very frustrating condition to say the least. It is hard to pin point, goes away with rest and comes back after activity, but is hardly painful enough to make you want to stop. It lingers and is always on your mind. And if you’re looking for my step-by-step sports hernia rehab video course here it is.
One the best definitions of Sport hernias is the following by Harmon:
The phenomena of chronic activity-related groin pain that it is unresponsive to conservative therapy and significantly improves with surgical repair.”
This is truly how sports hernias behave in a clinical setting. It is not uncommon for a sports hernia to be unrecognized for months and even years. Unlike your typical sports injury, most sports medicine offices have only seen a handful of cases. It’s just not on most doctors’ radar. The purpose of this article is not only to bring awareness about sports hernias, but also to educate.
Will you find quick fixes in this article for sports hernia rehab?
Nope. There is no quick fix for this condition, and if someone is trying to sell you one, they are blowing smoke up your you-know-what.
Is there a way to decrease the pain related to sports hernias?
Yes. Proper rehab and avoidance of activity for a certain period of time will assist greatly, but this will not always stop it from coming back. Pain is the first thing to go and last thing to come. Do not be fooled when you become pain-free by resting it. Pain is only one measure of improvement in your rehab. Strength, change of direction, balance and power (just to name a few) are important, since you obviously desire to play your sport again. If you wanted to be a couch potato, you would be feeling better in no time. Watching Sports Center doesn’t require any movement.
Why is this article so long?
There is a lot of information on sports hernias available to you on the web. However, much of the information is spread out all over the internet and hard for athletes to digest due to complicated terminology. This article lays out the foundational terminology you will need to understand what options you have with your injury. We will go over anatomy, biomechanics, rehab, surgery, and even the fun facts. The information I am using is from the last ten years of medical research, up until 2016. We will be making updates overtime when something new is found as well. So link to this page and share with friends. This is the best source for information on sports hernias you will find.
Common Names (or Aliases?) for Sports Hernias

Great information. Around 1'55" into the video, were you saying that the main pain point for sports hernia is about 1 inch away from the pubic bone towards the waist bone while there is no bulge or protrusion in the pain spot? Is that what you noticed with your patients in your practice? I wonder how many sports hernia patients have you helped so far? thanks!

Hello. There is often no visual differences in the region. A small amount of the time there is a very small amount of swelling. No discoloration. We have treated hundreds of people who have been told they have or potentially have a sports hernia by their medical provider. Using our rehabilitation methods we hardly every have anyone not get better. The only cases we have had to send for surgery are hernias (not sports) and people who severe arthritis of the hip that is creating the load on the tissues that hurt.

Hi mate, thanks for the video and the work you do. I have a small lump (pea size) seems like its in the muscle of my lower left abdomen. Also i have shooting pains at the top of my thighs in the groin area. Sometimes a sensation in my left testicle. I have stopped wearing any form of tight boxer shorts this seems to help a bit with testicle pain. The pain in my lower left abdomen was there for like two weeks, i would say on scale off 1_10 my pain is a 4/5 out of 10 but feels very tender. I am still going to work and lifting and pulling heavy items. Bit worried, at first i thought cancer, i have had some blood tests but nothing suggesting cancer. Now im thinking hernia does sound like a lot of my symptoms fit. I have an injury my right hand which means i use my left side to pull and lift more and this seems to be where the hernia might be. Its below the naval by few inches then too the left a few inches. Man im worried. Im 33 year old male.

I had an inguinal hernia repair 28 years ago at 37. The soreness I’m having in my groin worried me that it may’ve recurred, but though similar to before, it doesn’t seem to quite fit the symptoms of an inguinal. It seemed to start with what I thought was a mid/lower hamstring pull and I tried to do some self-care I saw on UA-cam, but I’m wondering if I over-did some of the stretches, like maybe the thigh spread. I can’t quite say I’m constipated or that I have indigestion, but that area does seem a little irregular. Anyway I hope I can get to the bottom of this and heal it. I haven’t been able to run for a month.

Would you be able to work with us one on one for it? We specialize in identifying what’s going on and how to solve it. Generally stretching is not enough mechanism to tear things. I’ve never met anyone who torn a muscle beyond rehabilitation by stretching. But that does mean it doesn’t hurt a lot. Pain can be caused by many factors. Many are not seen in images and don’t have surgical need if the is nothing local to correct. Email info@p2sportscare.com 714-502-4243

@@Performance-Place-chiropractor Thanks. I'm not an athlete, though I have been a runner for while. I don't feel a clear bulge or an opening, but this feels enough like my hernia in the lower abdomen and scrotal area that it just makes me a little nervous. Thought I'd just like to drop in and report a few encouraging improvements. I'm able to do a standing quad stretch on my left leg. I haven't been able to do that for about a week or so. My bowel movements are pretty much back to normal. For a while they were smaller, harder, darker and denser than usual. Apparently this does affect digestion, but that isn't noted much on the Net. I'm not out of the woods yet. I'm watching your vids and applying them as best I can. This isn't really "painful" in the groin area. It just feels a bit too much like an inguinal in some ways for comfort.

thanks for your answer, really appreciate any intake about this topic. the thing is, the first ultrasound doctor took ages to find something. and isnt the definition of a hernia a hole in the muscles too? so if there was a hole in the muscle, one could feel it/see it fast through ultrasound is my guess. the more experienced doctor later couldnt find anything, but didnt look for too long. he also advised me against a mesh, that stays in your body forever. much thanks to him. otherwise i would ve gotten a surgery for the wrong condition.@@krombopulosmichael6280

Ok thank you. I’m waiting for an ultrasound and ct to see if I have a hernia. No bulge and nothing telltale on the physical exam but left side groin, lower abdomen, and adductor pain.

Will stretches help groin and sports hernia injuries?

    • @Performance-Place-chiropractor
      @Performance-Place-chiropractor  11 місяців тому +1

Possibly. It really depends on what is found in your physical examination of your low back your hips, and even the remainder of your limb. At our facility we don’t get to see if stretches or exercises work. We assess to see if they will work with high success. every person you work with should be fully assessing before suggesting what to do. If you’d like to work with us, click in the link description of the video.

You showed the position of the sports hernia in the groin area but didn't show the location of the inguinal hernia in the groin.
You only showed the anatomical anatomical location of the inguinal h.
Yeah you kept and you also used the phrase that a sports hernia has nothing to do with digestive content I don't get the connection between the two. What do you mean by the digestive content??

I wish I could tell you what it was. We need a little bit more information via assessing the area. If you go to a good clinician, they can roll in and out the various types of conditions you may have. And they can also clear activities that would be safe for you if they do a thorough examination. If you’d like our help, just reach out. You can find us via the link in description for the video.
