Tavares left 21 million on the table at contract time to be a Leaf. Matthews has grubbed every single penny he could lay his hands on, on every occasion. When Matthews had chances to make a sacrifice and be a real leader and he went for the cash. Let the guy who loves the team and the fans more than an extra million have the C. Let the guys who only care about money have A(s) but nothing more.
There is no captain material on the Leafs, imo, Tanev, may be the closest( but I need to see more of him to be sure) because of his snarl, but a true captain will be smart, gritty and lead with sacrifice and example.
