Can you remember when footage leaked online of an RE television series which I believe was gonna be called "Arklay"..?
I can't believe no network ever picked it up?! The story seemed sound and even though the main protagonist was going to be a non-canon RPD detective, it was still going to include many of the characters from the original trilogy.
      What a wasted opportunity...

The sets were undersized and made the actors look way too big. Characters were written terribly. They gave Claire all of Jill's characterization and added some new elements that did not mesh. Cramming too much into one movie seems to be a common problem, especially with movies based on games. You can't condense 80 hours of game play filled with little bits of lore and every character into a 90 minutes.
This is why covering an entire game in one movie just doesn't work. Imagine trying to take Fallout: New Vegas and fit it into a movie, it just won't work. You could maybe get away with a movie about growing up in an experimental vault and escaping in the wastelands at the end, but nothing more than that.

To be fair, the RE games have way less content than Fallout: New Vegas. A Fallout adaptation (or realistically, any RPG or game that includes a ton of exploration) would more likely need to be a series (or miniseries) with double-digit hours of content to come close.
RE though? Where are you getting 80 hours of content out of RE? Unless the newer games have gone full Assassin's Creed / Grand Theft Auto with hundreds of sidequests and stuff, the ones this movie were based on wouldn't even break double digits (unless you count dying to something and reloading the save to try again "more content".

And in that, becoming a fan of the games.
That's something that could not happen in milla's films, cause if you truly like the Paul Anderson movies... then the games are probably not for you.
I also played the originals when I was a kid... and I also didn't notice all the bad writing and acting...etc.
What I'm trying to say here it's that while not a "perfect film" or "adaptation", far from it actually, to be fair it captures that 90s/80s campy B horror vibe perfectly, and there's nothing that screams more "Resident Evil" to me... than that.
The Remakes of 1 and 2 are in a way how you saw the originals when you were a kid... they are the perfect adaptation in a weird way, expecially the Remake of 1, with all that sweet scary stuff, but this movie isn't that... this movie is Resident Evil in it's purest form since the beginning, *including all the bad stuff*
The way I see it, it's that you can debate if it's a "good film" or not... but there's something I know. And that's the fact that the people who made this... actually tried for the first time since 2002. And that's something I won't just put a blind eye to, just because Leon or Jill don't look or act the same way as in the original trilogy.
Cause in the end... Movies and Games are two different things.

@@PracticalTacticalFedeli When you say "Made shit that made no sense" you are forgetting that this is a MOVIE, not a game. If they copied every single characters personality exactly as it was in the games, then this movie would have been even worse, cause every character in the original trilogy were not intended to be put on film, cause they don't have "personalities" they have the minimum necessary to make them at least "Human" but not a "Character in a film", they would all feel the same way...
This is the opposite of when you are adapting a book...
While I cannot for the love of me defend the decision of putting RE1 AND RE2 in the same film, you can see that every change, was made because of that.
For example, Lisa it's now in the orphanage instead of the mansion, this makes sense with his character and helps to conect the presence of Umbrella in the City and all the atrocities they have done, in a simple and effective way, but it also means that Jill and Chris won't be able to meet her like in the games... meaning that you can't explain all the mansion lore trough her and it's family, so now you need to change stuff like Claire meeting Lisa Trevor when she was a kid, but there's no space to put in all the lore for her now, cause the film can not surpass a specific duration... so what do you do?
You put a single lame ass frame were it explains all the backstory for her in the games.
Again, what I'm trying to say it's that you can not adapt RE1 and RE2 faithfully in a single film... unless the film was 6 hours long.
Considering that, you can now see that all the important changes make sense... cause if they were more "faithful to the source material", that would mean it could not work as a film.

I understand that video games are hard to make into films. There were certain things about this movie that were faithful to the source... but it could have been so much better. I don't get why they couldn't have made this into two movies with better actors, CGI, etc etc.

Sure it Had some issues, but it was really nice to see them at least do something that resembles the main game and I quite enjoy it, and it was fun to see especially the fight scenes and the one in the mansion with Chris and his MP5 it was really amazing to see, and I did like Claire’s character the actress is quite great, she’s a badass and not a damsel, but I think she could’ve went looking for Chris and instead of looking at umbrella, maybe she wanted to mend fences instead, I do love Avan’s version of Leon and I do like how he’s out of his element compared to the more experienced members, especially Chris and the stars team
But they’re missing 2 key members, Barry and Rebecca chambers but I hope in the next installments we see them and maybe they left raccoon city long ago with the rest of the RCPD, and only heard about the explosion
I do wish we got to see more of Ada, maybe instead we could see her skulking around and watching around, observing the group and maybe her encounter with Leon has more of her teasing the rookie, especially since Lily Gao really nailed her movements and I wanted to see more

I agree with you, it certainly isn't a flawless film (some parts are not really well explained) but overall I enjoyed watching it. Personally I'll rate this 7/10. The filmmakers really kept to their words when they said this film is a like love letter to the games. Hopefully Sony greenlits a sequel for this because I'm really looking forward to seeing what they'll adapt next (Code Veronica? RE4?) And yes, Lily Gao did a fantastic portrayal of Ada despite having only less than 1 minute of screen time. Her facial expressions, movements, and even her voice was very faithful to Ada's (esp RE4 Ada). I'll need a sequel to happen just so that I can see more of her.

Barry was in the movie but I don't remember if they ever actually used his name in the movie or not. There is a scene when Wesker is talking to him about his family and about them being in trouble if Barry doesn't help Wesker with his plan, but the hole Barry helping Wesker lasts all of like 3 minutes before the shit hits the fan and Barry is back being a good guy again.

    • @soulsurvivor8293
      @soulsurvivor8293 2 роки тому +1

The thing with Leon is he's always been an adorable dunce with terrible interpersonal skills. But he has also always been a highly capable combatant, predominantly a naturally accurate marksman with side arms with some of the highest grades of the physical areas of policing skills.
He's good natured and trusting, which in combination with his high proficiency in shooting and physical policing, were enough to get him through police academy and onto the force.
It's sad that Wesker was relegated to being a hapless patsy but can still be an elaborate ruse on his part.
The true tragedy is the lack of Barry from the RE1 parts of the movie.
While it's nice to see Claire and Leon with their RE2 story elements I would have rathered they didn't butcher the timeline for it's inclusion.
Frankly, if they wanted a concurrent and cast related story arc to RE1 they should have adapted RE0's elements and included its cast.
Rebecca could be thought of as the little sister to most of the STARS team quite easily if they wanted to retain a similar interaction with Chris. Could even throw in a dream like hallucination of Claire that turns out to be Rebecca from Chris' perspective. Set up after he gets dazed from a hit and Rebecca arrives over him to assess his injuries.
Elude to, without strictly setting it up, but save the Claire/Leon for a potential sequel. Even have similar sequences for Jill's concurrent arc in RE3 to the above RE2 sequence.
It would have appealed to fans of the franchise that wanted a more faithful adaptation. It potentially could have even increased box office sales to increase the likelihood to secure a sequel. Which as I said could incorporated RE2 & RE3 elements in a single & faithfully accurate, concurrent arc.
Honestly wouldn't even have been mad if such a sequel picked up shortly after the events of the first hypothetical film adaptation of RE0 & RE1.
He'll even have the early elements of RE2, where none of the primary cast are present for, like Umbrella pulling out of Raccoon City and Burkin getting owned by Hunk and his team be a consequence of STARS wrecking the Arclay facility and Mansion thus be a feasible reason for setting the second film so soon (hours/days) after the first.
Honestly, all RE adaptations need more Hunk screen time. Literally an in franchise real life action movie protagonist.

The Anderson movies felt like a tangent of the RE games (it could be a story running parallel with RE 1, 2, and 3) while this felt like the games. Hitting some specific scenes / reveals felt good, and the little things that were added in, whether as background stuff or callouts (like "Jill sandwich") felt right to me.

I would have preferred him to be more cold hearted with great acting. Possibly seeing him smile and laugh with the other officers and then turn the corner to a serious face could of made for some cool and ominous shots. I also wish I could of seen some rivalry between him and everyone else showing that he was more out of place than your average cop.

Honeslty I need movies to STOP forcing themselves into a 1.5 hour runtime and then expecting their to be decent worldbuilding or good storytelling. 90s films were long as all hell and people didn’t mind them.
Part of the reason why the original resident evil film, unfaithful as it was, worked with its condensed runtime is because the characters were trapped in a limited environment where only like four of them got any actual focus anyways and the story begins within the first twenty minutes. This movie had to focus on a ton of game characters and their lengthy backstories AND bring a whole town to life and it felt super rushed just because it started as a slow burn and then suddenly things just started happening like 40+ minutes into the film.
It could have definitely benefited from either an extra 20-50 minutes or, more realistically, focusing only on characters from RE1 like Chris, Jill, Wesker (as the main focus) and some other major characters to buff out the worldbuilding since they seem to be hoping for a franchise going forward.
Another suggestion I’d make is they should have even adapt RE0 as the main storyline or at least the first act with it leading into Rebecca kinda being the catalyst for the story to pick up into RE1 events in act two going onward and that introduce Chris, Jill, and Wesker into the story.
Introducing Chris, Jill, Wesker, Claire, Leon all at once as well as giving Birkin his story, the Lisa Trevor subplot, and the other assorted side characters just had to much to focus on. Cut down the cast (at least until later films), having the death and mayhem involve mainly redshirts, directly lift the movie plot from the game plots (minor tweaks here and there), and pad out the runtime so it’s closer to an older feature length film with a better pace.
Sorry this was long, was just really looking forward to this movie and while I appreciate the faithfulness, I’m disappointed a bit even though I enjoyed it

I have played through and beaten these games so many times and dumped so much time into them that I'm not interested in a beat for beat retread. Or even an "updated retelling". I can revisit the games for that. I have seen every scene and found every secret that at this point this is an ideal scenario. With that said it was far from perfect but serviceable for what it was.
