I fixed my 1350 which had exactly this problem - thanks for this very good video Tips : I add little soldering only on the 2 anchorages of the connector. For the pins I only heated them, by pressing with the solder iron tip, to melt the existing tin, which made the electrical connexion again. This avoid using grease
Excellent. I fixed my Nuvi thanks to your video. I drove with my GPS Garmin Nuvi with the USB connector press with scotch tape in order to make it work. Not anymore. Thanks.
Dear Technology tips, You certainly made a brilliant, easy video to understand coupled with excellent photography. I can't thank you enough for such a well executed tutorial. I will be repairing my 1450 thanks to your efforts. Bruce the swimmer New Rochelle N.Y.
Thank you for creating this excellent, step by step video tutorial. I especially appreciate that you also made mention of the possible difficulties that could be encountered. Considering that Garmin was asking more than what I originally paid for the unit to repair it, I am most grateful to have found your video. Now, all that is left to do is to remember where my soldering iron is.
Fine demo...liked the discussion of the solder bridge, a term I've seen but hadn't understood until seeing it here. Loved the camera lens magnifier...I wondered what I could use my old Yashica lenses for! Soldering paste was also a revelation.... I'm gonna go at this again, better armed this time....I had only temporary success trying it a couple of months ago. Humble thanks.
Dear Technology tips, First attempt i was not successful because i needed better magnification. After driving for two months with one eye on the road, and trying to find the sweet spot to keep unit on, i gave it another go. I just completed a successful repair due to your mentoring skills. I send gratitude, hugs and love to you and thank you again for your magnificent guidance!! Bruce the swimmer New Rochelle N.Y.
Alternatively just go buy a new unit. Let's face it if they last more than 12 months it's a bonus. Make sure you dont pay the full retail price on the first place so you wont feel so bad when it packs up.
Good point, however what if you have important addresses saved on it. Then the value of the information in the GPS is much more than the value of the GPS itself.
Garmin takes back defective/damaged units and sells refurbished units. I did this twice when I broke the surface glass. $400 Nuvicams were replaced with refurbished ones for $140. (I don't think they sell Nuvicams anymore.)
Excellent tutorial. I especially appreciate the guidance on using solder paste to avoid solder bridges, which I will now undertake. /begin rant/ Any competent engineer knows that it's a BIG NO NO to use solder to mount a mechanically stressed part! Solder is brittle and has very low tensile strength, and it has essentially ZERO fatigue life under vibration or repetitive stress. Where will a GPS connector experience vibrational stress? Hmm. Perhaps in an automobile? This has to be intentional, engineered obsolescence on the part of Garmin, designed to kill your unit shortly after the warrantee expires. Garmin could have easily applied two screws or rivets to anchor the connector to the board, or, even cheaper, molded the case so as to limit the forces on the connector, but why kill the goose that lays the golden eggs? /end rant/ I devised an easy temporary fix that served me for three years, until I bumped the unit hard and completely broke the solder joint. Others might find this useful. The main stress on the connector is downward. As we saw in your video, the solder joint on the bottom, where the solder was in compression, was still sound. Where the solder failed was on top, where it was in tension. When I thought about these stresses, I searched in my junk bin and found a plastic mirror mount with a flat base and a cantilevered hook, epoxied it to the back of the unit with the hook facing away from the connector, and used a strong rubber band to place the connector in upward tension. If I had applied this fix when I first got the unit, it probably would have never failed. www.ifixit.com/Guide/Quick+fix+for+the+universally-broken+mini+USB+connector+on+Garmin+Nuvi/143379
Very True! if Garmin wanted to make these last long they could have done it without much additional expense. Not to mention that when they first came out with these, they were not cheap.
I know this comment is a bit late, your video is great and very easy to understand. I'm trying to do this repair on my nuvi 1450 but there is a metal plate that partially covers the connections of the usb to the board and can't be removed, I cant really reach to solder it. Any suggestions? Thank you
Thanks for your compliments, no it's never too late. So here is what you need to do. The metal plat is only a RF Shield which can be easily bent without any effect to the GPS Performance. Use a soldering iron to dis-solder the corner pin of the metal plate which is next to the USB Port. Then bend the plate up and finish the USB repair, after the repair use a long nose pliers to straighten the metal plat as much as possible and re solder the corner pin to the board. The metal plate will still have some wrinkles on it but it's OK and it will not effect the performance of the GPS.
Nice video, I have a Nuvi 2555 LMT with broken port and capicitors are broken and everything, i tried soldering it but it dindt work and no longer even turns on anymore, i was sick of the problem and got a new 2555 LMT and in addition, got a 2595 LM and i LOVE IT❤, once again thank you for sharing this nice ip and i hope you get a million likes and 0 dislikes
Hello, thank you very much for this video. I have the same issue but I wish relocate the usb port outsider the gps. I wish sold a flex on the motherboard or other. The gps will take place in the dashboard and can't be unmount mable in the future. I just wish can disconnect bc30 cable for do the update. Actualy nothing works. My garmin goes in pc mode if I use an usb extension. My garmin is a 2597 LMT. Thank you.
For the GPS to handle the new maps sometimes it requires updating the firmware as well. So try updating the firmware using GarminWebupdate which is a free software from Garmin.
I did as you showed, and it worked full . but I have another problem with coffee, I did it, the computer does not recognize the garmin usb port. is there a solution, I tried on several computers and different cables and reinstalled the driver
Use a magnifying glass to inspect each solder joint on the USB port, there has to be one or more loose or broken connections. Also check for solder bridges between the pins that can also cause the PC not to recognize it.
I will be undertaking a repair of a 1450 for a friend. Unfortunately the inside is a bit different. There is a large shield over the board that covers the edge of the USB port where the soldering needs to be done. I am hoping I can remove the shield without causing any damage but it a appears, from a cursory overview, to be well fastened.
Hi, There is one corner of the plate which is soldered to the board right next to the USB Port, you will need to heat it up and pull it out. Then you need to use a long nose pliers and bend it slightly to have access to the USB Port. After the soldering job is complete you will need to fold the metal plat back in place and re-solder it to the PC Board. Keep in mind that no matter how careful you are there is no way to straight the plate without signs of folding it. So try to do it as neat as possible but even if the plate remains slightly bent it is OK as long as it is not touching the circuit board under it. Good luck
Fantastic video. Unfortunately I don't possess the tools or experience to attempt such a repair myself. Instead would you have any suggestions for where I might have my garmin repaired?

Hi, I don't know where to get it here in the united states but you can get it for under $5 from China, here is the link www.aliexpress.com/item/4000148361118.html
This is a lost art: most people just replace the unit and off they go. Great video, I would add that you should clean up the solder with isopropyl alcohol and heat the joint before applying the solder.
Yes I agree most people would just throw it away and buy a new one however if you have lifetime Maps with a unit then it is worth fixing because every map update is going to cost you a lot. In addition to that the older models work with third party maps where the newer ones must have unlock code. So the older ones are easier to use with foreign country maps if you are traveling overseas. Good point about cleaning up the soldering area, Thank you
I have the same problem, when I move the connector the GPS turns on and off. I have it apart but the silver plate, I think it may be a heat sink, is much larger than the one in your video. The plate is so close to the USB Port that I can't get to the connections solder them. Could you do a video on how to remove the plate. Thanks
The plate that you are talking about is not a heat sink but a RF Shield for the High Frequency Circuitry. The shield is soldered to the board on one point which you need to heat up and disengage. After that you bend the shield up and fold it enough to be able to have access to the pins to solder. When the soldering is done straighten the shield and re-solder it to the board. There will be permanent fold " wrinkle " on it because you can never straighten it 100%, but that is OK. Make sure the shield is high enough and not touching the micro components on the board. As soon as I get my hands on one of them with shield I will make a new video for you. Thanks
Unfortunately you can't do that, however you could install a Navigation App in your Tablet. For example they have Garmin App, and TomTom app for Android, Windows, and Mac OS
I have a Garmin Nuvi 1450. How do you get the charging light/icon/battery thingey to appear in the upper right corner? I plugged the unit into a wall charger and the charger icon does not show. Also plugged it into my desktop PC and it still does not appear.
I actually tried several of my Garmin Nuvi 1450 and 1490 GPS units and they all seem to be doing the same. They show the battery icon only when the unit is running from the battery but as soon as you plug it in the battery icon disappears. Unlike some models that who the Charge icon to show the battery is being charged. The newer Garmin devices show the charge icon when plugged in.
That happens when the power of it's internal battery becomes too weak. So if you keep it plugged in it will not go to a complete shutdown mode. When you press the power button while it is plugged in to power it will go to standby mode as long as the power is connected or the battery has charge it will remain in standby mode. As soon as the power is disconnected to will rely on battery power only to keep staying on standby mode, and once the battery is completely discharged it will turn OFF.
thanks for the info, but it happens when its plugged in though, again thank s for explaining it tpo me, also, a long time ago i dropped it very bad on cement and since then, every 4 months, it turns off completely.
The GPS Satellites are government owned and maintained by NASA and other governmental agencies worldwide. So it is financed by Tax Payers and free for public to use. The accuracy for general public use if very poor with 10 to 20 meters error margin, but for military use the accuracy is extremely high within a few centimetres.
Yes you can use a battery bank to use it outside a car, but for that you need a very special kind of USB cable so that the GPS does not go to PC SYNC mode. Here is the link to that cable. www.ebay.com/itm/333716621477
Hi, that depends on what is wrong with your GPS, because I don't want you to spend more than what the unit is worth. If it's a battery or screen problem the fix is around $50 return shipping costs included. However if the Main board is bad on a Nuvi 465-T you are looking at a repair costs that could be over $100 which could exceed the total value of the unit itself. All repairs includes a full Map update to version 2022
Hi, my Garmin Nuvi got overheat when I'm charging with my cellphone's charger. It was suddenly turn off while I'm checking the settings. I was able to unplug it. then I cooldown it for 30mins but It won't turn on now. Is there a chance to repair it?
Looks like a great video, but my problem starts even earlier. I lost all my original Garmin nuvi 1350 charger cables. I was told by Garmin support the charging port is mini. I have several USB and car charger cables that are supposed to have mini connectors but can't get any of them to insert into the charging port. I haven't used it for several years but it was working OK last time and the port looks undamaged. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Yes the port is called Mini USB Port, and this video shows how I changed a Mini USB port. You can get them cheap on eBay, bu sure to get the one which mounts straight at 90 degrees, most are mounted flat. Thanks

Sir, thank you for the video. I have both the tools and the soldering experience to perform what you showed us just now however my unit will power up when plugged in but it only says garmin for a few seconds and then the screen goes blank. I'm not getting much help from garmin.
@@TECHNOLOGYTIPS101 hi, I'm still having issues here. The garmin web updater can't find my device because my GPS won't stay on long enough for the app to find it. When I press the power button or plug in my device it only shows GARMIN then the screen goes blank, as if its powering itself off. I had it all apart to check the integrity of the power plug but its sound. It's like nothing works, please help. 😪
@@bigriceburner First I recommend that you use a magnifying glass to inspect the solder joints on the USB Port to make sure there are no intermittent connections. If that is all good then you will need to do a preboot firmware reload. For each Garmin the process is different but pretty similar, here is the preboot process for a Garmin Nuvi 760 Series. ua-cam.com/video/nfX2S2yvySY/v-deo.html
I've the same issue with my Nüvi 2699. My experience in electronics is from the time before smd comes up. What kind of stuff did you use to avoid bridges? Thanks for help.
Good Day, this isnt about the Garmin, I'm repairing a treasured family collectible. Not that it matters to you, it is an electronic "Gondola", the car travels uphill by a string, the string moves a switch attached to a small PCB from left to right to change direction. The motor activates on the right, but not when moved left. I do know electronics, I have repaired flatscreen TV's, PC's, tablets, cell phones and a hundred other devices. I see no evidence of a blown capacitor and just very minor foreign matter on the pathways. Do you have any suggestions where to start troubleshooting? If testing the capacitors, resistors etc is beyond my ability I would be willing to pay you to solve the issue. I can send photos if it helps. I know it's just a glorified "toy" but it means alot to my family. It would cost $250+ to buy a used one on the secondary market! Thank you.
Hi, sure I will try to help you but I need to see a few photos of the Electronic Gondola to know exactly what the situation is. My contact information is here www.khalids.com/contact.htm
So kind of you, thanks. There is a guy who repairs Dept 56 pieces who wants to charge $85 plus shipping which is practically criminal. ..and they simply make a repair to the small board, it's not like they are replacing it or making a new one. If I were to take an educated guess, I'd say there is just disruption to the flow, a damaged strip in the board as I dont see any capacitors leaking
Could you email me some photos so I can see what the problem is, this way I can tell you if the $85 that the guys wants is ridiculous or fair. It dose sound pretty steep for a small repair job.
@@TECHNOLOGYTIPS101 I will, thank you. I see no damage at all, the board isn't damaged, I see no leaks and I used this item for a couple of weeks per year at Christmas, seems unlikely to be enough usage to cause damage, but I can't see any other component that would not allow the motor to switch directions. The guy has a "corner on the market' since no one else offers Dept 56 repairs...but I myself install high speed motors in Disney Monorail toys that make them 3 times faster, I charge $28 and that includes the new motor. The only thing I can think of is maybe the switch that gets triggered when the Gondola reaches the end is only working in one side. I don't know how to test to see if it's the PCB or the switch...when I manually switch sides, nothing happens.
I think you need to reinstall the firmware, using the free garmin webupdater sofware and a USB Cable. You do have to have a PC it does not work on a Mac
Hi They are not exactly the same but similar, and you can find then relatively cheap on eBay. Also most likely you can re-solder the existing one and you might not need to buy another port.
@@TECHNOLOGYTIPS101 thanks for the reply. The problem is that the pins have snapped inside the port, so it will need replacing. I've seen 3 types of port for Garmins. I guess the only thing I can do is open it up and compare online.
To get the cheapest prices make sure to search for this " mini usb female port 5pin smd" this will give you eBay sellers from China selling 10 pieces for 99 cents. If you search by the name Garmin Nuvi you will get one USB Port for $8 or more. So open it first and see what kind of port it is and compare it the photos you get in search result.
Not really, but I heard good things about it. Specially the Live traffic update etc. They are hard to find here in the States but I did notice quite a few when I was in Europe.
@@DiCaShFlow I think this Garmin is the closes to a Coyote Nav it gives you a general idea as to how to open the ones without any screws ua-cam.com/video/7oxpAdUGkqc/v-deo.html

Yes you can use a battery bank to use it outside a car, but for that you need a very special kind of USB cable so that the GPS does not go to PC SYNC mode. Here is the link to that cable. www.ebay.com/itm/333716621477
My GPS port broke and I need to replace it. How would you take out the original and place a new micro female USB port?
What is the model number of your GPS?
@@TECHNOLOGYTIPS101 It's 2597LMT. Do you know the Tork screw driver size needed to open this GPS? Thanks
@@josecabrera5632 The Size is T5
Thank you a lot. You are the only one, who helped me to open / unlock this damned FFC/FPC cable.
You are very welcome, I am glad I was able to help :-)
Very educational - the construction is vulnarable so its very nice of you to show how its fixed.
You are very welcome, and thank you for your kind remarks.
Can you fix my nuvi 465-T if I send it to you
Hi, that depends on what is wrong with your GPS, because I don't want you to spend more than what the unit is worth. If it's a battery or screen problem the fix is around $50 return shipping costs included. However if the Main board is bad on a Nuvi 465-T you are looking at a repair costs that could be over $100 which could exceed the total value of the unit itself. All repairs includes a full Map update to version 2022
How strong is your magnifying glass?
I am using an old 50mm film Camera lens
What is the port on the END of the unit used for, Model 1490 LMT? Shown at 3:13. Good idea removing those tiny TORX screws over a towel.
The port at the end is for Micro SD card for map updates, and yes the towel is good so the screws don't get lost and the unit doesn't get scratched.
@@TECHNOLOGYTIPS101 Thank you Sir. Well Done.

Hi, my Garmin Nuvi got overheat when I'm charging with my cellphone's charger. It was suddenly turn off while I'm checking the settings. I was able to unplug it. then I cooldown it for 30mins but It won't turn on now. Is there a chance to repair it?
Yes there is a chance to repair if, but I need to know what is the exact model number for your GPS unit.
I wanted to try but do not have a sauter.
You can get one on eBay
Thanks
I tried to fix this myself but was unsuccessful.
Can you fix mine for a fee?
If so, can you send me your email address and price?
Thx

Sir, thank you for the video. I have both the tools and the soldering experience to perform what you showed us just now however my unit will power up when plugged in but it only says garmin for a few seconds and then the screen goes blank. I'm not getting much help from garmin.
Hi, No problem, you need to update the Garmin Firmware by running Garmin Web Updater. Do Not Use Garmin Express, only Garmin Web Updater. Thanks
@@TECHNOLOGYTIPS101 thank you sir, subbed for sure.
@@bigriceburner I appreciate it!
I used a very fine tipped soldering iron, and plenty of rosin to prevent solder bridge. Also a good magnifying glass would help.
Wow, you're good with small soldering, I'd have accidentally created bridges or burned a path
I get garmin logo but it doesn’t go onto maps any suggestions thanks
I think you need to reinstall the firmware, using the free garmin webupdater sofware and a USB Cable. You do have to have a PC it does not work on a Mac
brilliant!! worked a treat on my 1340!! thank you very much!!!
You are very welcome, Thanks for watching
thank you very much
You are very welcome.
Hi, are these ports the same in the nuvi 57lm? Need to replace my dead port and having trouble finding part info. Cheers
Hi
They are not exactly the same but similar, and you can find then relatively cheap on eBay.
你好!請問原廠電池要去哪裡購買?
You can only get the original battery for Garmin Directly, but you can get aftermarket brands from eBay like this one www.ebay.com/itm/142087145190
Do you know how to reset pin?
To Rest the pin there are two options, one to move to the location where it was set, 2nd to do this ua-cam.com/video/k_n5W69OdKM/v-deo.html
Hi, thanks, did you ever open a coyote nav ?
Not really, but I heard good things about it. Specially the Live traffic update etc. They are hard to find here in the States but I did notice quite a few when I was in Europe.
@@TECHNOLOGYTIPS101 yeah really good stuff but I broke the charging port and still looking for a way to open it..
@@DiCaShFlow I think this Garmin is the closes to a Coyote Nav it gives you a general idea as to how to open the ones without any screws ua-cam.com/video/7oxpAdUGkqc/v-deo.html

@@DiCaShFlow Good luck my friend
Mine fell off ..I don't know if I can do it since I can't see the slots where it should go. Does it matter if solder flows together?
No you can't let the solder flow all over the pins, each pin must be isolated from it's adjacent pin and soldered independently.
@@TECHNOLOGYTIPS101 thanks. I think you are taking about pins in the middle..looks tough.
are all usb ports the same from other garmin? i have a drivesmart 61
Unfortunately they are not the same, some are mounted in a 90 Degrees angle while others are flat. Also some are completely different physically
@@TECHNOLOGYTIPS101 where can i buy one? been looking can't find any
