I don't paint but come back to your videos quite often. This one in particular brings peace to my soul and it's a beautiful painting.
That's a great compliment. Thank you so much!
Anyone would be proud to have this colorful picture on their wall.
That's a great compliment, Corey. Thanks!
This sky has remained in my mind for many months . The 3-D effects from your arrangement of clouds is a thing of beauty & something to strive for .
Thanks, Peter. Keep painting!
It doesn’t get better than your work! Another masterpiece! As I’m watching I keep thinking “wait, now he’s standing in front of the real ocean! Nope it’s the actual painting. It’s just so real!!!” Bravo!
Thanks, Lydia. Great compliment!
Best clouds I've never seen
Thank you for sharing your talent. I loved it.
Back again, I come back to your vids quite often. I LOVE your work. Hope you and your family and friends are all well, thanks again for such generosity sharing these vids. 😘💕🕊
I'm fine, thank you! Hope you are well too. Good to hear you enjoy my videos.
the birds really add value to this :D
makes me nostalgic about summer :D
+Peter Gašperan Yeah, it's hard to imagine how I did the entire painting with the windows and doors wide open... Just a few more months to go.
That sky and water are unbelievable! I could watch you paint all day, thank you for sharing.
Thank you Diane. Great compliment!
Wow....just gorgeously painted!
Thank you so much, Nikki!
Wow! You did it again. Beautiful.
Thank you, Mike, for your encouraging comments!
The definition of a working artist, well done sir.
Thank you, Jay.
Slow yes and thank you for that! This is packed full of so much valuable information I can’t thank you enough for your generous sharing! You truly are the king of skies 👑🙌
Good to hear you liked it. For more slow info, please go to www.paintingskies.com/video
You are a superb artist. The crisp white of the foams and such well crafted clouds. Perfect.
+TheImperialFist Thank you!
I could watch and learn from you all day!
Thank you, that's very kind!
I LOVE the birds in the background.
Yeah, the blackbirds are great...
You're amazing without any doubts.
Great compliment. Thanks!
Watching the transformation of this beautiful painting has been inspiring...thank you...you are amazing!
Thank you Anne, very encouraging!
I love this huge work. I haven't done large paintings , you really have to pay attention and put in the enormous effort.
Thanks Kathleen! My work tends to get larger all the time. Just finished a work of 120 x 200 cm. It feels like the subject dictates it. The wide open spaces I paint are more convincing on large size panels.
Wonderful to watch.
Thank you, Caroline!
Oh, look - a beach pole... wait. Never mind. :) Beautiful painting - I like the slow time lapse. And the napping cat. :)
Thanks, Rachel. Sadly the napping cat (Alphonse) is no longer with us. The good news is we got 2 new cats, equally cute.
Again it was tremendously interesting to watch your working process, I envy your patience and ability to just "know" when something is right...or not. Lovely to hear the blackbird singing!! Makes me miss England... great work. Thank you
Thanks Lou! Though it may look like I'm in control, there is still a lot of trial and error involved. That's part of the fun of painting I guess. Every painting has it's own surprises... No blackbirds in Australia?Later!
You make so many changes to the sky!
It's trial and error...
Fantastic !!! You are Genius Mr Dolsma.
drimer96 Thank you so much!
Классные работы блестящего художника. Есть чему поучиться. СПАСИБО!
Благодарю вас за добрые слова. Ободрение продолжать!
Gracias gran maestro desde bogota Colombia
Muchas gracisias!
amazing and beautiful
Thank you, Marcus!
Absolutely beautiful!! Lol lol .. That's what you get for building such a small canvas..lol. I bet your right arm felt like you pitched all 9 innings of the world series, with all the blending and stippling..
It was worth the pain and effort..
Thanks for the journey my friend!!
Thanks and yes, you're right, it's a strain on the arm and shoulder. That's why I started stippling with my left hand.
Master and owner of clouds !!!
Thanks, Jezus!
Great job👍👍👍
Thank you, Patrick!
Sick sky. I love it so much ❤️
Thanks Sean!
Fijn om te horen, Peter. Dank je!

Grande Maestroo..
Thanks, Antonio!
The best in the world. Thanks for share this!
Thanks, Wagner, you're welcome!
you've come back on your work so many times, it's amazing...
Hi Shinouk, I'm not sure I understand exactly what you mean by 'coming back on your work'. Probably because I'm not a native English speaker. Would love you to explain!
@@PaintingSkies1 I think what he meant is that he’s amazed by how many times you went back and kept working your painting.
hi, @@PaintingSkies1 you don't understand maybe because i'm not a native english speaker lol...I mean, i thought your sky, your clouds seamed to be finished so many times and then i saw you repainting them...and again and again
@@shinouk97 Aha, now I understand! Thanks for your response!
Just WOW!
Thanks, Elizabeth!
Thank you so very much for sharing your talent with us. wish I could see your painting
Thanks, Sandra. Though there is one American gallery (the Edgartown Art Gallery, Martha's Vineyard) that carries a few of my smaller paintings, most of my work is in Dutch galleries (www.paintingskies.com/galleries/). So if you ever come to Holland...
Fantastic details. Thank you for the tips.
Thanks, Justin, you're welcome!
SU TRABAJO ES IMPRESIONANTE Y MUY MOTIVADOR PARA QUIENES ESTAMOS EMPEZANDO. MUCHAS GRACIAS

Thank you, Christine!
Wow! Beautiful art! I love it!
Thank you, Edda! Hope the tutorials are helpful!
breathtaking
Thanks, Frances!
I would like to suggest a You Tube video for you to make, if I may. Once we get my room completely ready for me to use as a studio I can start painting again but I wouldn't even attempt a large painting so that leads a question for me to ask does your technique between painting on your final large painting different than when you do your oil "sketches" to plan your work. Could you show how you paint one of your preliminary paintings? Your clouds are so breathe taking. So much movement in them. So peaceful. Thank you for sharing your talent with us. Stay safe and well.
Thank you for your kind words, Marcia. My oil sketches on paper are not as multi-layered as the final paintings. I did a few UA-cam videos to demonstrate how I do them:
ua-cam.com/video/KdKWL27QWeU/v-deo.html, ua-cam.com/video/06RTLaxDFDU/v-deo.html
Hope this helps!
Beautiful painting. Love the birds. Like your website. Your downloads are very reasonable for such a capable artist. I would love to see some birds in your sky painting, or on the beach. But alas, it is fine if you do not.
Thank you! I have painted birds in the past, but I must admit very seldom. In my painting 'Bright Interval' (in the archive section of my website, no. 11, 2009) you can spot a few seagulls in the distance. May need a magnifying glass though...
Clouds & Cats, what could be more better!!
You're so right, it's the perfect combination!
thank you for your videos!
My pleasure, Cordelia!
Your paintings are gorgeous! At about the 3:47 mark and other places you use a large round brush to tap the paint along the edges of color. What make of brush is that and where did you purchase it?
Thanks for your kind comment! The brush you're referring to is a stippler. It's mainly used for painting doors and window frames. I buy mine at the local hardware store. If you're interested to receive a list of the brushes and colors I use, please send an email to info@janhendrikdolsma.nl.
Slow and wonderful!!
Thanks, Annie!
beautiful!
Thank you, Linda!
Janhendrik, I just love these videos you make for us. I have two of your longer productions and I love the narration and your sense of humor. I've noticed that you brace the back of your MDF board to combat warping, Is there a special technic to this? What ground do you use? Gesso? If so do you sand between coats? I'm sorry for all the questions. If I could I'd just fly over and pick your brain. I aspire to be one tenth as good as you and look forward to the fun of the challenge. Lastly I'd like send my deepest condolences for the passing of Alphonse.
Thank you, Thomas. It's really good to hear my videos have been useful. I wrote an article on my blog, that might answer your questions: paintingcloudskies.blogspot.com/2015/01/canvas-or-board.html. If you have more questions, please mail me at info@janhendrikdolsma'nl. Thank you for your condolences. Still miss the little fellow...
Amazing talent. It would be a fantastic idea to know the colours used.
Thanks, Luis. If you send me an email at info@janhendrikdolsma.nl I will send you a list of the colors I use.
Magnificent.

@@PaintingSkies1 🙋🏻♀️🤩
Come to Oregon in winter. Breakers 20 to 30 feet at times.
Oh wow...
What gray mixtures did you use and what mix do you find you use the most ? Yellow with a touch of purple I like. Orange with a touch of blue . Is there red with a touch of green ? Is this right ?
Yes, that's right. I did a UA-cam video on the subject of mixing grays: ua-cam.com/video/42zk08rIV2E/v-deo.html.
I couldn't agree more! Without the trial-and-error thing painting would be quite boring. I posted an entry on perfectionism on March 19, 2015 (paintingcloudskies.blogspot.nl) that adresses this issue. If you want to find out more about my painting technique (including the mistakes I make) please go to www.paintingskies.com/video.
Hi! If you don't mind, what are the tools that you used on your painting?
I paint on 6 mil MDF board. Wrote an article about it on my blog: paintingcloudskies.blogspot.nl/2015/01/canvas-or-board.html. If you want a list of the colors and brushes I use, please email me at info@janhendrikdolsma.nl and I'll send you the list.
your work is stunning An absolutely gorgeous.I can see That you sketch Lines on your canvas when you Are painting the ocean below. Do you go over That in your videos?
Yes, in my full length videos (in particular the Painting Clouds video) I talk about the sketch and in how much detail I do it (not a lot, to be honest).
Question: What mixture of paint are you using for the shadowy (underside) of the clouds?
By mixing 2 complementary colors with Titanium white, in this case violet grey ( a purple color) and Naples yellow. If you're interested in how to mix colored grays you could check my UA-cam video on the subject: ua-cam.com/video/42zk08rIV2E/v-deo.html.
So many decisions! Whew! It's hard to watch because I know it's real work. I thought you basically used photos, but I see it's more your imagination. Great job.
Thanks, Mike! I do use photos, you're right, I compose new images with different photos and indeed a great deal of imagination. Thanks for noticing.
Hi have now received the video, many thanks..
GraphiteGray1 You're welcome!
Super.... 😍😍😍
Good to hear you enjoyed the North Sea Breakers video. Thanks!
Great to watch, I've just ordered your DVD so I hope my skies improve in the near future, how long did this take to paint ?
Thanks, Grahame! The North Sea Breakers painting took about three weeks to paint. The next time though, when I do a painting this size, it might just as well take four weeks, or two for that matter. It's hard to predict. Hope you enjoy the video!
Hi Janhendrik. I love your work and really appreciate your video tutorials! I've mentioned to you before what a fantastic narrator I think you are! Anywho, two questions, if you'd be so kind... First, are you planning to release any new sky videos for us to purchase in the upcoming year? And second, how do you know or decide when a painting is finished? If a painting stayed in your home forever, do you think you would be constantly drawn to 'tweaking' it?
Thank you, Ecaryn. We're actually working on a new video as we speak. It's about painting storm clouds. We're about half way filming. Editing and music are next, so we got our work cut out for us. Hope to release it sometime in May.
I decide weather a painting is finished when I got rid of the stuff that was bothering me. Every now and then I just want a painting to be finished and I try to overlook the annoying parts, but that never stands... If a painting stayed in the studio forever I probably wouldn't feel the need to keep working on it. When i got this gut feeling that tells me it's finished, I can easily let it go.
Thank you for your helpful reply. I find overworking a painting and perfectionism challenging things to overcome. I like your approach of working out specifics of what isn't feeling right to me and addressing only those in my work. I will be eagerly awaiting the new tutorial, storm clouds are right after my own heart! Prosperous new year to you, sir!
If you want to stay informed about the release of the new tutorial, you could subscribe to my newsletter. Send me an email at info@janhendrikdolsma.nl and I wil add you to the subscribers list. A prosperous new year to you too!
Mr Dolsma:
Your techinque is exactly what I am looking for! I do many of the steps, but you, of course have a method which i need. I tried to email you, but I haven't heard back to order your video, I also checked the "Junk" folder. Are you still selling your lesson on clouds? Would enjoy purchasing it. Thank you from Southern California, Judy
+Judy Salinsky Hi Judy, sorry to hear you experienced problems in reaching me. I just checked my inbox and saw that you succeeded in downloading my Painting Clouds video. If you have any questions, please mail me at info@janhendrikdolsma.nl.
+Judy Salinsky.....Thank you for the quick response! I was able to purchase the video on cloud and it is downloading as I am writing you. REALLY looking forward in your lesson. J...ps, I agree with the others who comment on the beautiful sound of your birds in the background.
+Judy Salinsky Thanks, Judy!
Genius
Thanks, Paul. I don't feel like a genius, though...
@@PaintingSkies1 How can you know how a genius feels.....
Piacevole vederti all'opera e... sentire il canto degli uccelli in lontananza !
+Marcella Romiti E 'stata una calda estate, così ho lavorato con le finestre aperte.
Which is easier for you, small or large paintings?
They both have their own challenges. At the moment I prefer the large sizes because they fit the subject. But after a few big ones I'm always returning to the small sizes... If you want to keep updated on the stuff I'm working on please go to paintingcloudskies.blogspot.nl/.
Such lovely clean colors! 2 things I want to do "my bucket list", paint better and learn to speak Norwegan I am reading the comments ( I have a little back ground in german and understand some of what is being said. Also....I have a niece who moved from Cornwall England and picked up the languish so easily I thought I might give it a try. Sorry to bore you.
Jessica Cole Sorry to dissapoint you, Jessica, but I'm Dutch. Thanks for your kind comment!
Janhendrik Dolsma I have watched your videos many times now and always come away with my first impression......Lovely lovely colors. Your compositions speak for themselves, to me they are perfect. (And I still want to learn Norwegan) !
Jessica Cole
Can't help you with that, I'm afraid, but if you have painting questions, please let me know!
Not just a guy painting? A Master!
