Vincent is his best. The lyrics are amazing. Nothing like that today.

This was a fantastic interview. Learned so much about Don McLean. I didn’t like the questions about the “misdemeanors “. Don’t think that was necessary but otherwise, was a wonderful interview about a brilliant talent.

Interesting he explains his approach with the word burlesquing and not playing to an audience’s preferences, and has his one known song.
Be it an awesome song, but not a common tune people hum or get caught in their heads and want to sing along with, but an anthem type song, so be it.
Van Halen paid the rent playing music then wrote many anthem songs later when had captured the attention of the audience by playing known covers, familiar songs with their iconic sound and talent to raise the songs out of plaindom that nobody knew was there. And many great bands and artists have found success from making fans happy enjoying their music and putting on a great show to be enjoyed.
As impressed as I really was when I saw McLean play American Pie on Johnny Carson one night in the 80’s, long after it had been a new song, it’s remained a one hit wonder, and Don just explained why that is. I’ve seen too many super talented writers and musicians get lost in their own talent and expect to wow the audience somehow with prodigy like appeal, and it’s playing your own music to yourself because you don’t care to relate to your audience.
    …Therefore you don’t have one.

False! He has many great songs. American Pie reached the level of iconic, legendary! To say he only had the one song is as ridiculous as saying that Led Zeppelin only had Stairway To Heaven!

@@whoDean "Vincent" is one of the most achingly, painfully, beautiful songs ever recorded.

And besides "Vincent", there was "Castles In The Air" and "Empty Chairs", the song that moved Lori Lieberman to write what would become "Killing Me Softly With His Song".
