I think the great revelation in All-star Superman is that Superman’s greatness has nothing to do with his powers and everything to do with his kindness, his altruism.
That final panel of Superman becoming a literal sun-god navigating a solar-barque is absolutely perfect. Morrison nailed the concept and Quitely nailed the art.
Issue 10 is also my favorite of the bunch, and one of my all time favorite single issues from any title. I still remember first reading that scene with the suicidal girl, and being so moved by it. Despite the weight of a million other responsibilities, Superman was able to pick up that random phone conversation happening in the background and save that one girl, who he sees as equally as important as the other large scale matters at hand. This along with the final few pages of his Doom Patrol run were those rare comic book moments that had got me all emotional. Glad you're giving Doom Patrol another try, Ed. :)
Bar-El specifically refers to H.M.P. Barlinnie, Glasgow's Victorian prison situated in the East end of the city. It's locally known as Bar L. Fitting then that Bar-El becomes the Phantom Zone's jailer.
Grant Morrison also wrote DC’s 1 Million event, which imagined the millionth issues of the DC pantheon set in the distant future in which The Golden superman finally emerges from the sun to reunite with Lois.
I think this work owes a lot to the Alan Moore Superman stories from the 80s, especially the pre-Byrne era two-part "Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow" and his 90s run on Supreme.
55:02 Re: Superman as god of our world - Mark Waid put a brilliant spin on that concept in his Irredeemable series. It might've been a direct shoutout to Morrison.
Correct. If you're familiar with philosophy he's supposed to be Aristotle's unmoved mover, which is considered to be God or the first cause. This is both a play on Superman being an all powerful being, literally an unmovable force, and also a perfect good being.
Bar-l is the nickname of Glasgow's prison.....Barlinnie. Looking forward to the Marvel art theft story having a light shone on it.All the best from Newcastle-upon Tyne,Airstrip One.
I think now would be the time to do the video on the worst to best Superman Analogs. I want to know where you’d put : Supreme, Apollo, Omniman, Homelander, True Man, and Samaritan.
I don’t know all of the references, but I love that on Earth Q as we move through history, we’re getting all of the cultural milestones that led to the idea of Superman. The cave paintings, Giovanni Pico della Mirandola talking about aspiring to be like angels, Nietzsche, all culminating in Siegel and Shuster. Superman as an idea is an inevitable culmination of human culture even if he doesn’t physically exist in that universe. Just genius
Really good documentary of Morrison talking about All Star Superman that was on the DTV animated movie for those interested ua-cam.com/video/6VO9505oVkM/v-deo.html
I think I watched a youtube video where Chip Kidd shows off some of the original comics art he owns - including two issues worth of Quitely pencils from All Star Superman 😮
the page when they attack superman and say "a soft wee scientists son" there is also a head butt. or what is known locally as "a Glasga kiss". Also the front cover Bar-el is ment to look like a N.E.D. basically crap Glasgow gangsters.
That's good to hear because I hated the masthead's for the all star line. Would like to see what Kidd actually wanted to do. It's not surprising though because I have yet to see a new masthead from either of the big two that looks good.
In terms of the style of the colors and pencils evolving over the course of this series, its important to note that these issues-- especially these later ones-- were significantly delayed and took a long time to come out... not as long as All Star Batman, but long enough for things to gestate a little between chapters!
I have yet to read that one. Been wanting to buy it for years but I just hate the colors. The palette, the way it's applied with all those shiny effects and unnecessary modeling... I guess once you read you forget about it but still... Love Quitely line though.
All hail Frank Quitely
It took three guys from Glasgow to show us how to do Superman properly.
I love this comic. Best Superman ever!
Great episode.
And one aussie to fuck it all up.
What I’m noticing is all the Marvel movie ads in a DC comic... 16:26

This one really justifies the Absolute edition

Great episode on a legendary run. The Superman 2 of the final page is one of the Supermen that comes back in issue 6.
Great video guys 👍.
Issue 10 is one of my favorite comics. Grant Morrison has the ability to make me cry at least once per series.
Doomed planet.
Desperate scientists.
Last hope.
Kindly couple.
Bar-El is the nickname of Barlinnie prison- a very tough prison in Glasgow nicknamed The Bar L

That first panel at 47 minutes in where the bridge is being put back... all the people watching were folk from the studio where Quitely worked.

I had never understood the appeal of Superman until I read this comic. Absolute genius.
Same.
Same, I read this in high school and made me get Superman
Luthor had a sister in the Silver Age. Wasn't it Lena?
Lexi Luthot
Best version thus far IMHO of the Clark Kent secret identity explanation - hope they use it in the upcoming movie

the statue with the eagle/ Supermans tomb comes from the cover of Superman 14
I have my doubles ready!
Big fan of the way the daily planet crew all know who Clark is but are playing along, because they’re his friends.
Jim might like to look at The Suicide Squad by James Gunn. Excellent use of color throughout..

Goofy stuff = imaginative stories by men working within the comics code.
All those ads!! What a horrid reading experience single issues from the corporate IP comics publishers are.

How is spit sexual, I'm having a hard time seeing that... Lex spitting at the glass is more disrespectful than sexual.
Btw Chip Kidd owns all the original pages for issue 10:
