Once you are out in the field with your young dog be very aware of making every experience a good one. Play safe rather than let them get out of control by doing something that they are not ready for. Here a 2yo dog has to watch before she can take properly take part.

Thanks Andy ! Pfoof, that sounds a serious dog, well done! The little I know about Solms seems difficult. These dogs keep us on our toes.

Do you guys crow hunt much? Are gsp's suitable?

Ha, never. Their beaks are long and they are ferocious if wounded. Occasionally one is shot on a shoot and I would never ask a dog to retrieve as the dogs eyes could become victim of that beak.

Hi we’ve got a 7 month old German shorthaired pointer I was wondering if you could recommend how much exercise we should give her because we took her to the vets last week and she’s pulled a muscle on her back making it hard for her to sit down the vet told us she’s been running to much and to rest her for a fortnight.
    Thanks Stuart

Hi Stuart I would have her out a couple of times a day, half an hour each time to include a lead walk and short training sessions on the lead but also taking the lead off for specific exercises as she progresses. I normally walk on the lead doing some training as I go and find somewhere safe to do some retrieves/ sit & stay etc Also an hour or so in the garden able to play about on her own and a couple of times a week time to play with another dog for a short time. If she is taken out regularly to run free (wear herself out) she can damage growing bones, will run off lots of weight and generally increase her excitement level making her more difficult to manage. Training is much better than running at her age ! If you plan to work her then very short hunting sessions can start, but I would avoid game until she is settled and on the whistle.

Thank you for getting back to me really appreciate it. It’s our first time with a gsp we love her to bits and hope we haven’t done to much to soon with the exercise. She’s been on short walk lock down for a fortnight - advice from our vet, she’s been well rested so we keeping our fingers crossed she’ll be ok from now on if we follow your advice so thanks. Really enjoy watching your videos.... Beautiful dogs.
      Thanks Stu

Have you any tips on how to teach your dog to hold on point ? My dog rushes in.....

Quietly work him up to birds in cover (which will help them to hold) keeping him on a long lead until he starts to improve. After that you can just slide the lead on when you get up to him, but dont let him flush anything until you are certain he is steady. Dont work with other dogs (it is too much competition). Always make him sit to the whistle when a bird gets up whether he has pointed or not. He will have to be obedient to the stop whistle if this is to be effective. Good luck.
