Ahh, you mean the Royal Seal, formally the honours list. Why has it changed? Because any increased spending has to go through several gov departments. Where as the Royal Seal offers less transparency, as it no longer has a long chain of checks and balances, and, as such, can rise exponentially in secret. Also, when adding the cost of transport, maintenance, security and many, many other secret costs the Royals upkeep is more towards £350 million. A far, far greater cost than the MSM will let on.

Most people living in constitutional monarchies don't really love or even care about their monarch but most have neutral opinion about them and prefer "status quo." Australia have a referendum on whether to keep the constitutional monarchy or become a republic in 1999, the republic lost because the republicans have different choices on whether the ceremonial president will be elected by popular vote or by the parliament. Barbados did the referendum and they will become a republic this year, the Queen can't do anything about it. But honestly, I don't really care about the monarchy vs republic argument, for me its about absolutism/presidential vs parliamentary.

I am a naturalized citizen and I am interested in history. I think the monarchy may have some value for Canada but there is a disconnect between the Canadian population and what the monarchy represents. For example, many people still see the monarchy as "British" while, here, it's really "Canadian". For me, it is a sign that the canadian monarchs maybe living too far away from Canada, leading to people seeing her as a figure that belongs to their colonial past. The Queen reigns over Canada but she looks more concerned about British affairs than those of any of her realms. In that sense, she loses some legitimity. Maybe Buckingham should send us some prince live here and start a new dynasty for this system to go on...

    • @jeanmoke1

The first part of your comment is the entire basis for the amendment of laws in a democracy. Also, sending a Prince to oversee your colonies sounds very fascist. I'm really confused sometimes with these settler countries, it really seems like y'all really don't want democracy. Autocratic presidents - fascism, monarch representatives - feudal. It doesn't even make sense for a federalist republic.

Without the monarchy all those land and profit will return to be under private family ownership. The royals will return to being ordinary posh people who are just rich and not bounded by any responsibility.

Canada pays for the Canadian monarchy. The Civil List doesn't exist anymore and was a purely British thing. They use the Sovereign Grant now. In Canada, the institution of the Crown is funded by taxes. But, that's no different to how any president's office is paid for.

@@nostromo2244 lol No, the governor general is not a defacto vice-president. Marks for originality, though. I've never heard that error before. The governor general is a viceroy; he or she can exercize nearly all the powers of the monarch. A VP doesn't get to use the president's power.
And, what does "pay for them" mean? If you're referring to the Royal Family, we do indeed "pay for them" when they're performing duties at the request of Cabinet. We pay for the residences they stay in when they're here; the planes we fly them around in; the security that surrounds them, etc. It's UK tax payers who don't "pay for them". The Sovereign Grant is not tax money. It's a paid-back portion of the profit off the Crown Estate that the Queen gives over to her British treasury every year. Indeed, she anually adds some 300 million pounds to the public purse, which more than makes up the cost of security; the only thing Brits pay for with taxes.

As a 🇬🇧 that was fascinating since the Queen is here, in a physical sense, nearly all the time & in this country (especially 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿) there's no sense of the monarch being imposed or being in or from another country. It's clear that Canada has Canadianised it's Crown (a good thing) and is completely independent so I wonder if you have that sense of her in a way being ingrained in the psychology of the country - like your tribal chief or ultimate grandmother. Scratch the surface here, I think that's a common British feeling, tho few would admit it (& that's the point).

Even if the next monarch of the Canadian realm from the House of Windsor was born and raised in Canada, a republican will still call them 'British'... A lot do not really grasp all this 'royal' subject. Even in England, a lot do not realise that Richard Lionheart, one of the most famous of English kings, didn't speak English as a first language and was barely in England during his reign. I'm not Canadian so a pinch of salt. I'm British. The Crown of the two realms is a bond amongst the peoples connected through history, culture, ancestry and ideals (this goes for ALL including more recent immigrants. Once you identify to a nation, you become part and have a share of the legacy. It's not an 'apart' in which you pick and choose which part of history, ancestry and traditions is comfy for you. You don't have to agree or justify but neither could you absolve yourself of it. You can't enjoy the cream and say you had no part in squeezing the cow's tits...). In 1812, the Americans challenged this bond by invading British North America under their pretences (including 'liberation from the Crown'), all the while simply to aid their French ally Napoleon in Europe by opening a second front in the Americas. (Regardless of what's taught now, about 1812, in the US and the PC Canadian education system not wishing to offend the neighbour...)
The Canadians stood firm for their Country and their corner of the Empire then (the biggest chunk of British regulars were in Europe at the time, fighting Napoleon. The Canadian natives and native allies did what needed to be done for their own land and sake.). This was the beginning of what would become the Dominion that would fight and die with their brothers across the world, inc. two World Wars, to defend these bonds and ideals. Canada, Australia, New Zealand, UK etc etc were all superpowers as parts of a whole. It is sometimes a sad thing, for me, to think that these bonds, reinforced in the trenches and horrors of wars, in the triumphs of nation building, are slowly being eroded over the years. From my perspective, US Americans are cousins, but Canadians are brothers...

@@stevenmcalister826 Slavery is synonymous with rich plantation owners.
In fact, if we're going in absolutes, I would argue that slavery would be more synonymous with republics.
A significant amount of support for the American Revolution came from southern slave plantation owners, that isn't to say that the American Revolution wasn't backed by popular support, it was, and there were genuine (albeit very flimsy) grievances against the British Government.
Another example, when Brazil became independent from Portugal, it was a monarchy, the Empire of Brazil. However, there were only two people to hold the title Emperor of Brazil, the last was Emperor Pedro II, who reigned from 1831 to 1889.
Emperor Pedro was an opponent of slavery, and freed his palace slaves, but he couldn't do anything about it because the plantations owners held significant power in Brazil's Parliament.
Eventually, the liberal abolitionist faction passed a law in parliament, which banned slavery, and the Princess Regent Isabel signed it (her father, Emperor Pedro, was in Europe at the time for a surgery). This aggravated with the planter class who disliked the abolition of slavery, so much in fact, that they conspired with a group of disgruntled army officers to overthrow the monarchy. A coup was launched, the Princess Regent and the Imperial Family were forced to flee the country, and join the Emperor and Empress in Europe. Emperor Pedro refused to join any attempts at a counter-coup.
The Republic of the United States of Brazil, was politically dominated by the army and the planter class, but now, there was no monarchy to keep them in check.

Our monarchy today is bounded by the constitution and the parliament after glorious revolution. The ruling monarchy is checked by the parliament and can be deposed if necessary.
The British with the constitutional monarchy enjoyed stability in our politics and society.

In 1870, the Third Republic was born and since the French have grown tired of dictatorial directorial (where the presidency rotates within the council), consulate, and presidential systems so they decided to vest most of the powers to parliament then president is ceremonial, in short, parliamentary system. This system cause political instability in both the Third and Fourth Republic where government changes in less than a year and slow to respond when it comes to crisis like WW1, WW2, and Algeria. In 1958, Charles De Gaulle theorize that there must be a central figure with enough political powers to unite the country and respond faster to emergencies in order to stop the political instability, so he shrink the parliament's powers and ballooned the president's powers. A Fifth Republic executive president almost haves the same powers as an Ancien Regime absolute monarch with the difference that he's elected and that the parliament still haves some powers (but still, most powers are in the president). And if there is an outcry for your death, more people die instead of laws changing. How is this individual rights?
