Turning The Doctor into weeping angel was very well done. It's both disturbing and fascinating. One of the best cliffhangers of Doctor Who
Weird thing is I couldn't picture it happening to any other version of the Doctor... maybe 6, but there's something about Jodie's reactions to it that make it iconic for her.
@@DokkaChapman I agree. In the scene where she is talking to the rogue angel, the hatred she has for them is palpable - understandable, given her history with them and how much they have hurt her in the past, but that kind of species-specific antagonism is rare in this Doctor, it's usually reserved for villains on the level of Daleks, you can tell she feels very strongly about them. Seeing that kind of repulsion she has for them in the scene before, you know it's going to hit her particularly hard when she turned into one; the thoughts running through her head as she transformed must have been terrible.
Then she turned straight back…
It has to be one of the most iconic moments of Dr Who now. The Dr becomes a weeping angel. Brilliant , the score Jody's performance and the lighting and camera work. NOW i HAVE TO GO THE SLOW WAY ROOUND TO SEE WHAT HAPPENS.
I half agree with you. It WILL be IF the pay-off over the next two episodes is worth it. I am hopeful though.
Wait, hang on. Chibnall came up with that cliffhanger? For some reason I assumed it was Maxine Alderton. Fantastic idea Chibs! That scene is definitely one of my favourite in Who history. My jaw dropped. 😊
I suspect the original idea of the Weeping Angels in the village, Jericho and the missing girl was Maxine. I also suspect this started out as a standalone episode before the COVID-19 restrictions forced Chibnall to tie it into the Flux storyline
7:00 "I hope it works, if it does it should look really cool". It most certainly does work Jamie, and then some! That was an incredible shot, what amazing work and likely to be one of the most iconic moments in Who history in years to come. Well done all. 👍👍👏👏👏👏👏
I like how ambitious the Director seems with his use of single shots, he's got some serious talent!
RTD hire Maxine, she deserves more than 2 episodes
What an ending to that last episode :O Sunday cannot come soon enough!
The Angels taunting Professor Jericho was incredibly eerrie, and distressing, in the very best way possible. Some fantastic writing, complimented by gripping acting!
So excited to see the Angels back, but I don't think I was prepared for how bloody creepy they would be this time! Worse than ever! And that ending nearly killed me. Our poor Doctor!
Chris Chibnall has scored a surprising triumph with the best Weeping Angels story since Blink.
People turning into stone because 'no one survives it twice' is a great addition to the lore of the Weeping Angels.
No one ever does
Rory survived it twice, but then again Rory survives everything.
@@AnotherScifiGuy I always thought that undoing the paradox reset Rory's first sending back into time, so his second time was his first because of timey-wimey stuff
(Or we could always just forget that, because Rory lore overrides every other piece of Doctor Who lore because Rory is king :D)
I also love how it actually makes sense
After you've been attacked once, all your life energy's already been eaten, so you wouldn't be able to go back in time again
We have a couple of weeping angels in my local grave yard and I won’t go anywhere near them. 😳
But they will go near you;)
Have you counted the gravestones?
You might want to count them every once in a while... Never know that one could go missing...
I will admit, 13 turning into an angel both surprised and terrified me. This will be a memorable moment in who history, well done Chibnall
And Claire wiping the dust out of her eye; I worried that that would happen before it actually did. I had a feeling this episode would be amazing as Maxine co-wrote it (having wrote The Haunting of Villa Diodati with the Lone Cyberman), and I was right.
@@memassivbeast I hope Maxine aiderton write in series 14
@@charlesfranze3571 I hope she does.
Weeping angels don't blink when Evil Dan is around.
What's the point in being alive?
@@N3groN3rdZ he’s getting good at this
I want to see Dan smashing one with his wok next episode
Great to see one of Steven Moffat's greatest ever creations return in this current era of Doctor Who!
I really hope they don't tell us any more information on where they came from or what they really are. The mystery of them is part of what makes them so terrifying.
Honestly this episode was so crazy I and such a plot twist next episode is gonna be crazy
I just want to say on behalf of myself and many fans, THANK YOU to all of the cast and crew for their incredible hard work and dedication on our favourite show, especially during a global situation, I am beyond grateful for all that you guys do and it is certainly paying off! Incredible stuff, truly! Thank you, so so much to Chris, Jamie, Maxine and all of the cast AND the rest of the team!
Yes, thank you to all, this episode and indeed the entire season has been a fantastic piece of work so far❤
Please keep doing these behind the scenes videos. I use to love doctor who confidential, sometimes I was even more excited for confidential than the actual episode hahah!
To the crew that makes doctor who, well done you're absolutely fantastic.
This had honestly been the second best weeping angel episode of all time
Agreed
Time of Angels and Flesh and Stone were way better...
@@Nick7901962 no i dont think so cos thats when they came up with the whole 'whatever holds the image of an angel is an angel' thing and i think that was just unnecessary. Also, i didnt like the angels moving cos the whole mystery for me about them was what they looked like when moving because we didnt know if they stayed looking like an angel while moving. And 'angels are quick. Quicker than you know' so why did they move so slowly?
Definitely Yes
@@Nick7901962 they were good but I didn’t like the idea of seeing the angels move. I just think the angels in this episode were more scarier and more chilling
I hope RTD has Maxine Alderton's number because so far she's made two of the better Who episodes. Yes, I know Chib was involved but I suspect a lot of the credit goes to Maxine. Either way, I think Chib's stories work best when he's not the only writer. Like Fugitive of the Judoon.
Jodie's best cliffhanger by far.
Her best episode and series so far.
I lost count the number of times I went "Oh no!" at a... sticky situation, or the cliffhanger.
Love it, love it, love it! I've been here since '63 and I am blown away with this season. But Chris is really shuffling the narrative so much, Russell is going to find that Chris is a hard act to follow. Bring on the specials and Russell T.
This episode was truly fantastic
Was that pun intentional??!! 😂😆
I genuinely have NO IDEA how the Doctor is going to fix this? And isn't that exciting. This episode was proper scary and had some great characters and moments.
Also, is Chibnall taking after JNT with the Hawaian shirt?
The prevailing theory I've seen, that I think is most likely, is that she's only been temporarily transformed as a way of restraining her until she's taken to the Division, where they'll turn her back for the face-to-face confrontation we've been waiting for. Whatever happens though, this is all super exciting and I have never wanted next week more than I do now.
@@BlueSparxLPs Same here. I can't wait until the next episode.
What d’ya think?
@@raphnotryry Satisfying ending, I say. It's a mix between Chibnall's own idea and the complaints from the fans. I'm happy.
Close one eye at a time. Easy peasy.
Once again, a great episode !!! It was so scary, it's great !! I really love this season ! 👏👏👏👏 Thank you for making Doctor Who truly great again !
Amazing episode, maybe the best so far in 13's run! And I know she's gonna get out of this somehow but damn this week is going to be veeery-veeery long!
I am happy that they did their best not to do the mistake of showing the angels actually moving in camera. Another incredible episode from this series!
Weeping angles have always been my favourite, and they really did a great job. Well done Chibnall!
The better the stories get the more flamboyant Chibnalls shirts are. He's like the new JNT
What a fantastic episode~ More Jamie, please~
Jodie is always utterly delightful. ♥️
So I guess that old fan theory from the Tennent Era that the Weeping Angles were Time Lords has been confirmed to be true.
Not necessarily. I thought that too until I guessed that The Division employed more species. I mean, Karvanista is a member, he's Lupari.
Not really, no. But I can see why people would immediately think that. I still think weeping angels are their own species but it seems that they can also make other beings into weeping angels (they're not the first monster to turn other creatures/humans into their own kind) as we can see with Claire.
Makes them a bit more dangerous now that there's more to the list of abilities they can do.
@@poorsmolchildissmol Claire Oswald? 🤔
I still want them to be mysterious, makes them more scarier
Love these BTS
Same
the angels were so terrifying in this episode they did so well with this episode
Credit where it's due, Chibnal, you made a damn good angel episode.
Every time I see them I try the "Don't blink" challenge! I even try blinking one eye at a time!
You know what makes them mysterious, not having stories expanding their lore!
Never expanding their lore would also cause them to stagnate even if stories with them are few, though. There's a balance to strike and you severely limit the number of stories you can tell if you go in with the idea that you cannot expand any further. This episode used all of the lore to great effect and added a tiny bit more that didn't hurt their status at all.
@@BlueSparxLPs If stories of them are few, which they should be, the risk of stagnation hardly becomes an issue. The biggest draw in of the Weeping Angels is their mystery and lack of explained background. If your story requires explained lore of the villain then the episode is clearly not interesting enough by itself, examples being this episode.
Moffat did it well by simply expanding to their 'arsenal' by allowing them to simply kill, allowing them to steal peoples voices after having killed them and talk through technology, not being able to stare in their eyes for too long, and allowing them to impersonate images of themselves but also flopped by allowing them to move on camera and by turning the Statue of Liberty into one. He never tried explaining anything further other than adding to their abilities.
Now Chibnall has given them the ability to simply just talk whenever they want without the need for technology or even killing anybody. On top of having them now work for (such a terrible idea) a new mysterious organisation where they don't even act freely as "scavengers" as they once were. It removes their mystery and individuality having them work for somebody else. Also giving them the addition to explode people after having touched them twice goes against old stories such as the Manhattan one where they literally built a farm where they could keep touching people. That sounds pretty weird when I type it out tbh. Also having them constantly cover their eyes when hunting makes no sense. It's like he never even watched the older episodes before writing for them.
It worked Jamie! It worked!
The Angels have to phone box
Throughout the whole episode I was blinking 😂
I would've loved to have seen the non-CGI'd raw footage of Jodie's acting of the transformation. The CGI is phenomenal, of course, but I want to see the base :)
This is an AMAZING episode.
Just my god chibs a fake out outro and onto a second cliffhanger jesus
And with that 16th take Jamie, you just created one of the most iconic shots in Doctor Who History, not just NuWho! This 13 to Angel transformation shot is on the same status as the shot of CyberBill holding the 12th Doctor in her arms against a backdrop of smoke by Rachel Talaylay in The Doctor Falls.
Agreed, so glad he was dedicated enough to go for that 16th take for the perfect shot he needed and the vision he had of it being one wrap around shot, so much more effective than the script called for. What an amazing director!
Amaing Jamie and the team did absolutely great with this
This was like the episodes of "old". The best so far in this series.
I'm still shook the doctor became an angel. Curious to see where this goes.
Jamie is an incredible director, I hope he stays on in the future.
Amazing episode. Flux is a brilliant series so far.
Best single episode since world enough and time
I watched this Episode in Doctor who and my god it's creepy and scary well done you deserve this better Episode so far
There has to be a point where someone figures out that you can wink with one eye at a time to beat the angles.
That's my strategy
Or wear mirrored sunglasses
Bro this season has been sooooooo good
Blinking is autonomous. It keeps the eyes lubricated and clean. But it can be avoided by deliberately blinking each eye alternately. But... Don't sneeze. Don't even sneeze. Sneeze and you're dead...
I pretty much guessed right our baby angel grew up
As a guy that didnt particularly like the past two seasons, I've got to say they've done really well with this one. Each ending leaving on a cliff hanger reminds me of how I'd feel as a kid when the empty child's woke up and attacked the doctor or when the doctor got shot by a Dalek and began regenerating. Don't know why this ones so different but I'm so glad it is.
Of course a stone can't kill you either but then you turn your head away, then you blink and oh yes it can- 10th Doctor
Who else prefers the previous angel design? Like with the sharper jawlines and the talons instead of human like hands?
yeah
me
Strongest episode in a long time 💙
Jamie Magnus Stone, an appropriate name. :P
You got 3-5 people's not all of them blink at the same time ?
Man… these episodes would be so much better with Murray Gold composing..
Calling it now, Bel and Vinder are the doctors parents and the weeping angels are a punishment of the division that they use to force people to work for them to manipulate the time stream when they need it.
That shot definitely worked!!!!!!!!!!!!
What happens if you throw an angel into lava? Does the whole volcano become an angel when it cools or does it destroy the angel?
The moden Angel jodie looks good
Bro I blinked as soon as that flash happened at the end 😳
4:29 nearly said he when referring to Dr who
Its her accent, she said "its"
Love this season! Love all the new faces! And the old ones haahaaa 💙💙 An excellent cast!
this cliffhanger was so dope like who would’ve expected that? I’m predicting they’re gonna write the weeping angels into timelord lore after being hinted at in the end of time
They’re very similar to Slenderman. You look away, you look back and he’s coming closer. You look at him, then he’s gonna capture you and kill you. You look at him then he’ll take you. He feasts on eyes so he can have eyes again and go back to his normal self before he became a powerful dangerous humanoid creature
Jamie Magnus STONE was born to direct a Weeping Angels story :)
In actual physics language “quantum beings” translates to “very very small unit of measurement beings”. Now you can stop being scared
Like Vashdanerada?
Amy took two episodes to start turning into a Weeping Angel, with the explanation that she stared into the eyes of an Angel for too long. Claire had an Angel in her head because she's psychic. The Doctor was transformed because...of nothing. Well, I'm sure it will get explained in the next episode. >.>
This is the same flashy, lazy writing that says that the Doctor can escape the Matrix--the repository of all Time Lord knowledge--by feeding it all of their (remembered) knowledge. The same Matrix that the Doctor has been connected to several times previously.
Is it fascinating to watch? Absolutely.
Does it make sense within the Doctor Who universe (to which Chibnall keeps referring)? Not even a little bit.
When you realise timelords are baby angles soooo cuuute^^
this is the 4th best weeping angel story
1) time of the angels
2) flesh and stone
3) blink
4) village of the angels
3rd best you mean, time of the angels and flesh and stone are one story
The time of angels/flesh and stone is not better than blink!
@@intergalactic92 It's not better than this one, either.
1. Blink
2. Village of the Angels
3. The Time of Angels/Flesh and Stone
4. The Angels Take Manhattan
Never realised how beautiful Jamie stone his voice to 😂❤️
'Their mythology started very small and then Steven expanded it over time.'
Not a great thing for a villain that became iconic because of it's simplicity, imo. :P
Feels like there's now a long checklist every writer needs to introduce to the audience for every Weeping Angel episode so people know what they can do.
One-trick-ponies can become really stale over time. Good monsters and villains evolve. Just like in real life things evolve.
@@anttibjorklund1869 that's why i think it's so good that they're not overused. if they were in more episodes then the writers would have to keep adding to their mythology and eventually it would be so convoluted the characters would be ruined
@@oremstale8558 Even used sparingly one-trick-ponies can become stale. That's why addition to lore is a must.
I didn't really like Flesh and Stone, or the idea that the thing that holds and image of an angel can become an angel, but I love the way they handled that in this episode.
@@sallyatticum I really wasn't a fan of how it was done in Flesh and Stone either. But I absolutely loved how they utilised it in this episode! It worked so well!
Chibnall's version of Doctor Who is as interesting as Facebook's Metaverse. Go Iceland!
My mind just went silent when I saw The Doctor turn into a Weeping Angel
What a cliffhanger was not expecting Jodie's doctor to turn into a angel
Chibnall really going for that John Nathan-Turner look though.
I don’t think I can look at them the same now. Blink should have been the only appearance of the weeping angels as it had more mystery to them but now it’s come to this
Chibnal can't help himself. He can't just let things be unknown, be mysterious- like the origin of regeneration. I really am not liking him
To be fair, it’s not Chibnall's fault that Moffat wrote a few more Angel episodes in his era (adding more to their mythos each time.) This episode doesn’t actually add much more, it just uses all the existing stuff.
alternative blinking. where you make sure both eyes are opened before you close the other. Please tell me there is some in-universe reason this hasnt been tried because its such an obvious strategy, even if you are by yourself
7:11 well... guess i'll stay awake all night
What would happen if you simply blink one eye and then the other, so you always have one eye open?
Wheeping angels look goofy in this series
I love Weeping Angels. And... FIRST!
Nah thatgaydangernoodle was first
Sorry ur not :)
At the end of that episode after the Doctor turned into a weeping angel. To the Doctor Who Team, hell I wouldn't even know if Jodie would read the comments, I would be very fanboy if she did and replied. But anyways point is at the end of the episode... YOU GUYS LEFT MY MIND BLOWN WITH THOUSANDS OF QUESTIONS, LITERALLY MY MIND WAS BLOWN!
And in the "Next Time..." scene was it just me or DID I SEE KATE LETHBRIDGE STEWART?! DOES THAT MEAN UNIT'S COMING BACK?! WHAT WILL HER REACTION BE WHEN SHE MEETS JODIE'S DOCTOR?! Oh my god this is just getting intense
Francamente no se como le hará el doctor para salir de esto.Espero con ansias el siguiente episodio.
Was a great epsiode but I think seeing a weeping angle drinking a cup of coffee would be funny to see
Yes
4:09 a blinking Weeping Angel looks very weird.
In my opinion this episode was better than Blink and I LOVE Blink!
Why doesn’t Stan have the new flux series, I want to watch it.
Trust us, IT WORKED!!!
Turning into stone, I know what that feels like. ;)
No but serious, that ending really hurts and I hope she will become herself again.
Can't wait for people to cosplay that moment though.
