1998 is my GOAT year. Ocarina of Time, RE2, Half-Life, MGS, Baldurs Gate, Xenogears. Panzer Dragoon Saga, Grim Fandango, Fallout 2, unreal, Star Craft are all classics that defined genres. Not to mention Star Wars RS, Spyro, Banjo, 1080 snowboarding. Tenchu, Mario Party, Dark Omen, Gran Turismo and more.
Cyberpunk 2077, Final Fantasy 7 remake, and The Last of us 2 were all massively anticipated games that could never have lived up to their hype. I think that also contributed to the year feeling disappointing to many. When in reality all three of those games are great.
@@Sersumi yeah I remember the hype around cyberpunk was unreal. And to be fair a good amount of this blame has to go to the CPR marketing machine. But fans just took what they gave us and ran with it. I mean that game was rumored to essentially do everything at one point or another. Then, I know personally I’ve been constructing the perfect FF7 remake in my mind since I was a kid. I already knew even if the game was perfect it could never live up to the massive expectations and nostalgia I had for that game. So I decided to enjoy it on its own terms, and not compared to the original. And the last of us 2 is another one. I didn’t click with the game as much as some people did but I also found a lot of the criticism for it incredibly stupid. Like, your favorite character dying does not make this a terrible game. People die in this world. There are no heroes in this world that’s literally one of the central themes of the original game. To me it felt like people really just wanted “the last of us, again.” Not the last of us 2.
Good take. Great year. The covid game I'm from would be Genshin Impact over Animal Crossing TLOU2 and Cyberpunk were rough when they launched. Cyberpunk was basicallly on its beta phase. GOW and RDR2 arguably being in the top 5 games of the decade and on the same year makes 2018 hard to beat. Also 2020: Among Us Spider-Man Monster Hunter: World Detroit Become Human Forza 4 COD Blackops 4 BF 5 Far Cry 5 Fallout 76 AC: Oddysey Hitman 2 KingdomCome Deliverance (a personal favorite) Smash Bros ultimate Nino Kuni 2 Shadow of Tomb Raider Sea of Thieves Hollow Knight 2020 is peak. By quantity and quality.
Meanwhile 2004: Halo 2 Half Life 2 GTA San Andreas Need for Speed Underground 2 Metal Gear Solid 3 Gran Turismo 4 Legend of Zelda Minish Cap and Four Swords World of Warcraft Metroid Prime 2 Doom 3 Silent Hill 4 Warhammer 40k dawn of war Tony Hawk's Underground 2 Megaman Zero 3 2004 was the best and it's not even a debate
It’s definitely a debate bro. I frequently see 1998 and 2004 debated as the best. My money is on 1998 because of how it defined genres. Basically creating templates we still use today. But 2004 has an argument in being the year that perfected those formulas.
@@joelman1989 1998 is a close second. It had excellent games but fewer than 2004 Either way, the 90s and the 00s were the golden age of gaming. The 2010s and 2020s are nothing compared to the golden age

Appreciate the video bro beautiful work. Nothing like my channel 😢
Really? I would say 1998, 2004 or 2023. Never heard many say 2007 or 2018 (though that is a good year).
Those are some great years, I now realize i should have at least mentioned 2004 at the beginning 😅
