  • On a recent church yard clearance job from earlier in the year we tried out a few skid steers and loaders to see which one to buy. After selling our old small skid steer last year we are in need of a replacement.
We had about equal time with each but unfortunately did not get much footage of using the Ditch Witch. So which one did we go for? Any thoughts on these machines?
A review will follow of the machine we went for...

Keep in mind that Ditch Witch machines only have two auxiliary hydraulic couplings (High and Low flow) on their very High End machines. Vermeer has both on all but their very basic model machines. This can be important if you're using attachments that have both a motor and a cylinder, and you don't want the hassle of using electric switching to power both; which can't be done if you need to use both at the same time.

Depends on wether you want to sit in or stand on machine. I like the stand on machines with 360° unobstructed view and the ease of getting off and on the machine. But I really like how the arms extend on the Ditch Witch but I would have to go with the Vermeer. If you get the SK1050 from Ditch Witch that would solve your problems.

I think I would like the Cast Loader the best for your application

easy to tip over, poor visibility and slower to load with. Telescopic arm and less scuffing damage is good though. Went with the vermeer in the end.

Went for the Vermeer in the end. Price and finance was very good. Can lift a bit more than the ditch witch too. The Ditch Witch was the better machine though, better built and good features. The next size up would be good. The cast loader was ok but felt cheap and tacky. Mini loaders are not my preferred machine really, easy to tip over and slower to use.

@@FinchArboricultureLtd I agree with the choice of the Vermeer, especially when you can get a 40 HP gasoline engine option in the SX925tx that ups the power and lifting capability to almost that of the CTX100. One more thing, the Vermeer grapple is Ok, but for serious tree work you're better off with a Branch Manager 56″ T1010 BMGR with powered rotation. www.branchmanagerusa.com/shop/rotating-grapples/bmgr/

@@NFAtoys only the diesel option was available in the UK which is ok as diesel is cheaper here than gasoline. Nah, i hate the branch manager, much prefer a fixed grab.
