I played this for a close friend who had his worst days fighting in Bosnia. Years of anguish and pain that he kept well hidden finally surfaced in an audible sob and continued as he replayed the song several times. I will forever be so grateful that this beautiful and unusual collaboration happened. Mother Mary guided this pair of amazingly gifted musicians and also held my friend as he grieved the horror of war.
Love this beautiful song. It brings tears to my eyes. Holy Mother pray for us. Thank you Eric Clapton. Thank you Lord for Eric Clapton and his wonderful talent he has shared with the world. RIP Pavarotti.
Goose bumps and tears. How could Clapton himself hold back when you have the greatest voice of all time belting our your lyrics along with a wonderful choir. Just pure emotion.
In this benefit concert for Bosnia in 1996, Eric Clapton performed a song he wrote for the Blessed Mother along with the renowned Italian opera singer Luciano Pavarotti and a terrific Gospel choir. The words of the song are a real prayer for Clapton. In his memoir, Clapton: The Autobiography, the musician writes about a rock-bottom moment he had in rehab in 1987: “I was in complete despair,” wrote Clapton. “In the privacy of my room, I begged for help. I had no notion who I thought I was talking to, I just knew that I had come to the end of my tether . . . and, getting down on my knees, I surrendered. Within a few days I realized that . . . I had found a place to turn to, a place I’d always known was there but never really wanted, or needed, to believe in. From that day until this, I have never failed to pray in the morning, on my knees, asking for help, and at night, to express gratitude for my life and, most of all, for my sobriety.”
That is Awesome!💓 Ice been trying to get that book at my library and sadly it seems they don't have many musicians bios or anything about them!🌹 I was shocked. This performance speaks to the heart of a true moment of despair, filled by prayer. ❤✨
He didn't write this song for the "blessed mother"(she don't exist btw) he wrote this song in 1986 for Richard Manual who was a good friend of Eric's who died young. The holy mother he speaks of wasn't his mother or the blessed mother it was just an ideal of someone who could help him someone he could sing to, he explicitly stated before many times that it has nothing to do with Holy Mary or the blessed mother. Why do ppl only read what they want to see and ignore the truth when it comes to religion. I mean you read the book and you still want to believe it's a religious or holy song. Also this song was written over a year before he went into rehab in 87. He wrote this song in March 86 just after Richard had passed. It was 100% a tribute to Richard Manual and he 100% wasn't singing to the blessed mother.
Hail Mary, Mother of Mercy, Hope of our Nation! thank you, God for this song through Eric Clapton! God bless us through the Omnipotence of Christ's Divine Mercy.
There is a a saying that when you see something good, it will make you will feel good...but when you see something great, it will make you feel humble. This is beautiful and I feel very humble after watching it. Terrific.
I love this song a Signing every where I go its keeping me feels very near to holy mother thank you guys awesome love much god bless n rest I peace Let angles singing with u together as one happy time forever god bless
WOW! Just amaizing, Pray for us Holly Mother the world needs You more than ever! Thank you so much Mr. Clapton for this inspiration of this beautiful song. Hope you have more songs spiritual inspirations. Peace, Love, Harmony, AMEN!
Wonderful song, a real prayer in music. Thank God for these blessed talents. Immense Pavarotti, Eric Clapton composer, writer, musician, the band and the terrific gospel choir.
Incredibly powerful song. It's so great to read these comments and see so many people enjoying it. But I feel as if I must say, that while Clapton is certainly reaching up to Heaven, this song is largely a tribute to Richard Manuel, he's grieving for the loss of a friend and for the pain Richard endured
when I was driving back home through the hill country last year, looking for the right tree, a friend sent me this video of this song. it got me through a dark time. and when I need it, it's still there...and so is she...
Thank you for your beautiful song. I lost my son in 2015 and I have gone thru a terrible depression and when I found your song it has helped me to face tomorrow without my adorable son. And to think that one of my favorite singers, Luciano Pavarotti is singing it with you and what a wonderful thing you are doing for all those kids. Thank u and may our Holy Mother continue to hold you up and love you.
very rarely is a single voice more powerful then an entire choir..RIP Pavarotti and Long Live Clapton, my favorite clapton song of all time and the one that speaks to me most
a flawless heart opening guitar solo you can feel the connection to the Divine through his playing. More than just a great guitarist but a shaman who uses music to heal.

"Holy Mother" Holy Mother, where are you? Tonight I feel broken in two. I've seen the stars fall from the sky. Holy mother, can't keep from crying. Oh I need your help this time, Get me through this lonely night. Tell me please which way to turn To find myself again. Holy mother, hear my prayer, Somehow I know you're still there. Send me please some peace of mind; Take away this pain. I can't wait, I can't wait, I can't wait any longer. I can't wait, I can't wait, I can't wait for you. Holy mother, hear my cry, I've cursed your name a thousand times. I've felt the anger running through my soul; All I need is a hand to hold. Oh I feel the end has come, No longer my legs will run. You know I would rather be In your arms tonight. When my hands no longer play, My voice is still, I fade away. Holy mother, then I'll be Lying in, safe within your arms.
I noticed that too. This song gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. The passion not only from both Capton and Pavarotti but from the choir too! Wow - to be able to say you sang back up vocals for these two must be a thrill that will last a lifetime.
i met Pavarotti in Pittsburgh, when he was opening the Pittsburgh Opera season one year in the late 80's. he was an unbelievable presence in a huge, empty room. he could not have been more gracious or kind. i took one quick spin around the dance floor with him before the evening's guests entered the room...it is a memory i will forever cherish!
Pavorti we miss you so much! Eric CLAPTON I am 82 , please don't leave until I am gone. We have lost so many of the greats.
I listen to this song almost every day.
Absolutely beautiful. Clapton and Pavarotti clearly show the gift that God gave them and deliver such a beautiful and moving song!
The world's greatest guitarist and the greatest opera singer of all time. It does not get any better!
Listening to this in 2019 and need it as much now. 🙌🏼🙏🏼
I love the smile on Pavoratti’s face as Eric weaves the solo at 5:19. A master from one world admiring the work of one from another world
Everytime I hear this, its like hearing it for the first time....will never grow old, endless joy....
This song helped me everyday fighting to live in a hospital alone..
what a beautiful song. The Blessed Mother will ALWAYS answer your prayers. AMEN.
A true glimpse of Music in heaven!
Sit Down and have a listen at this! Such beautiful music and musicians.

As a person who lost their mother as a child, this holds dual meaning to me.....breathtakingly beautiful. I've fallen asleep to it many of nights.
Simply amazing how so many different styles of music can come together....

Just wonderful. Not many songs can make me cry
Possibly my favourite Clapton song ever. Ray Charles would be proud of his voice now.
"Holy Mother"
Holy Mother, where are you?
Tonight I feel broken in two.
I've seen the stars fall from the sky.
Holy mother, can't keep from crying.
Oh I need your help this time,
Get me through this lonely night.
Tell me please which way to turn
To find myself again.

Holy mother, then I'll be
Lying in, safe within your arms.
