This is a fantastic live version with extended intro. Good choice. Santana is one of those bands where choosing a live rendition for a first hear can frequently be quite rewarding!
Yes, as in the Allman Brothers.
Carlos Santana and his band always bring the heat. Fortunately I was able to see him twice live. Two of the best concerts I've attended. Just makes you want to dance.
Agree. Ive seen him twice also. A true thrill, and Santana is pure legend.
Saw them at least once every year from 1979 - 1990 and then at least another seven or eight times after that. As you said, they always bring it.
@Come Together, I'm a 68 yo Englishman Londoner and first saw them play live at a festival in 1970. Since then I have seen them play at least 36 yes 36 more times till I lost count!! The best two shows I have ever seen, out of I reckon 300 or so of a variety of huge names and small/er bands in a variety of sized venues were 1973 The Lotus world tour and forget the date 2002 maybe the Shaman tour. The band and their music has played SUCH a big part in my life, for which I feel blessed to have been touched by this.
Chester Thomson, the keyboardist, is the band leader. He’s been with Carlos for years. This band is always incredible live!
Chester left Santana in 2009. Carlos is and always has been the bandleader. That’s why it’s called Santana. 😉 I absolutely LOVE his music. Like all of the best musicians, seeing him live is always better.
@@tiffanypalmer9918 I know he left, and I understand why the band is called Santana. I saw an interview with Carlos years ago, and he said Chester was the band leader and organized a lot of the arrangements. I’ll defer to Carlos.
I like that you let the music play and not stop to give a reaction your doing it right then you give your musical expression of the artist 👍👍👍👍
Santana has a beautiful collection
Of music and special artists that join him , listen to live Berlin 1983or
1985 ?Buddy Miles sings praises
And around the same era look
Live in some high school it outdoors
Song spurts dancing in the flesh
And somewhere in heaven
It will bring 😂
SANTANA "EVERYTHING'S COMING OUR WAY"
Greg Rollie, the singer and keyboardist in this band went on to form “Journey” with Neil Schon who started his career with Santana at age 15.
I saw them during the Moonflower tour and they played a three hour set with encores, but two to three thousand people stayed in their seats to wait for traffic to thin out . Santana was kind enough to come out with all of the house lights on and play another twenty minutes for us.
The version on that Moonflower album is my favorite!
Chester Thompson on keys....Fire!
this is what a song sounds like when everyone does a solo at the same time
Love that description
That was a religious experience. Santana Rocks!🎶🎸🤘
Note: the other guitarist on stage is Jorje Santana, Carlos' brother ✌️😎🎶🤘
I've seen Santana live & they're amazing 👏 😍 🎶🎵🎸
As a drummer, you must love that percussion section! Carlos always is surrounded by top flight musicians. Chester Thompson on the keys is always a pleasure. Can't tell on this video but Alex Ligertwood is a great vocalist. So much Santana sound out there.
Talk about a whaling band, god do I miss these guys.
What fun! Thanks, I never saw this one before...love Santana🌹
This was freaking incredible! I love Santana but I never heard this performance before.
I've seen Santana live three times. The absolute best show was in 1981 at the Montreal Forum. From the second or third song until the very end, I, the girl I was with, as well as the rest of the ENTIRE AUDIENCE of about 16,000 were up on our feet, dancing our asses off! I've been to a LOT of concerts, but never another one where that happened. And you could tell the musicians were totally feeding off the vibe. It was sublime!
Saw Santana 3 times and each was terrific. His love of music flows out from him, so you can't help but cheer for him! Beautiful song! Thanks for post Sir Chod!
10 thumbs up
Another perfect performance by Santana. Was lucky to see them in concert twice - once in 1972 and again in the 90's sometime. Can't remember the year, but I certainly remember the concert. - a bunch of middle aged people drinking wine and being civilized - much different from earlier when the joints were going around and everyone was rocking! Both were excellent concerts!!
Santana and hes musicians are maniacs, Weird melodies, the give n take between them
and Santanas often quite "cocky attitude" throwing out short intricate bursts of electrified splendidness at us, and The input of samba etc. often adds .... backbeats ♥
(one sure way to get me goin,,,, whatever it is im goin).
Next Carola suggestion with a Important message included:
'Let the children play'
.
Let the children have their way.. ♥
Americans love blues and cuban percussion.Nice to see Jorge Santana playing w his brother ( a regular in the 70s NY salsa scene)
One of the greatest bands from the late 60s who was at Woodstock and their performance there really put them on the map Carlos Santana is still one of the greatest guitarists today
And it goes on & on..
Fun to watch Chod try to play all the instruments with *stank face* 😄
The first incarnation of Santana (albums 1 - 3) was the best version of the band in my opinion. This was when Greg Rollie and Neal Schon were with the band and shortly before they left to form Journey. (I'm referring to the studio recording not this live performance, btw.)
Great old Santana song from the Album "ABRAXIS." So many great songs on that one record album.
I'm so happy that you understand musicianship and Latin Jazz rock. You're reaction was epic. Check out the George Benson and Carlos jam.
Jorge Santana on 2nd guitar. Check out his band Malo - "Suavecito".
I knew by the expression on your face, I just knew you were in the zone Chod!!! Santana for over 50 years has had many ,many, many personnel changes but some how ,some way he always manages to assemble a kick ass, tight ,great sounding band! There are so many different Santana albums to check out. A real jazz fusion album is called Caravanserai. Clive Davis from Columbia records called musical or career suicide,he warned Carlos that he was completely changing their sound and making a mistake. It went gold but the original band lost 4 members because of it,including organist, lead vocalist Greg Rollie!!! Still there a few albums right up your alley to check out . One is called Lotus it's live from Japan in 1974, it's jazz fusion plus great tracks off the first 3 albums!!! Superb!!! Then another another live one called Moonflower from 1977, a studio album called Inner Secrets from 1978 ,The Zebop album from 1981 and Havana Moon from 1983. Start with those and you can't miss. Lotus and Moonflower are live but the sound and musicianship is outstanding. Lotus is even better than Moonflower but it's not as well known cause it was only byreleased in Japan . It wasn't till 10 years later. You will love lotus , someone downloaded the whole concert DVD on UA-cam, check it out, it's superb!!!!
Love your big smile at the end....that's the way I feel when I listen to Santana.
Next...

Jorge Santana - guitars, vocals
Chester Thompson - organ, keyboards, vocals
Myron Dove - bass guitar, vocals
Walfredo Reyes Jr. - drums
Karl Perazzo - percussion, conga, timbales, vocals

The keyboardist is Chester Thompson, formerly the incredible organist of Tower of Power.
Wow, I had no idea there were TWO Chester Thompsons! The other one, of course, is a fantastic drummer who played with Zappa and went on several tours with Genesis. They should have joined up at some point and formed a band called "The Chester Thompsons". 😁
@@frankpentangeli7945 I believe they both played together with Santana at some point.
@@frankpentangeli7945 yup that would have been cool....CT X2
I once saw Santana after a break . They were getting ready for a tour after 2 hours Carlos got on the mike and said they weren't quite back in the groove so we need more practice then played for 2 hours. Later that year I saw them at Day on the Green with Journey and Toto
Saw Santana open for the Stones in 1981 and again as the headliner at Ravinia (Chicago) about 5 years ago. This performance and jam is pretty typical of their live shows. You have an altar to percussion, wailing electric guitars, and haunting vocals that often sound more like a conversation with the instruments on stage than a typical storytelling song. Their shows are emotionally exhausting (in the best possible way) and very satisfying. Hopeful might describe it best.
Thanks for this one, Chod. Great discussion.
Thank you!
Tengo 50 años escuchando a Carlos santana y sus excelentes músicos Batuka y sin depender de nadie ufff super
Great choice bro!
Tight Band!
Having recently seen the Zombies version of She's Not There you should now check out the Santana version.lz if you haven't already.
Speaking of never knowing what to expect from Santana, try the track Aqua Marine from 1979's Marathon album. I'd go with the studio version for this one. It's not a really well known song (probably never heard on the radio) but it is amazing and very different from what you've heard them do so far.
Hey bro. Great tune here man. Just gotta say, I luv your Zeppelin T shirt!! Rock on!!¡
Thank you so much for reacting to this song. My band in Florida used to do this song when the album came out and dare I say I think we did a respectable job on it. I consider it one of Santana's very best efforts. This type of song is why I love Latin percussion so, so much. Except for Santana these are not the original band members. We did the version that came out on the album and I think the original members of the band were on that one.
Great stuff. I saw him on this tour in Birmingham.
This was fire. Makes the studio version seem sterile. What a jam.
Fire!
Batuko was the first track on their third album and Gregg Rolie and Neal Schon from Journey were on that track/album
Yeah, I miss hearing Neal Schon’s screaming guitar in the studio version.
Love it. I only saw him once live a few years after Woodstock. I was a kid then and the air rather smokey. Awesome back then, awesome now.
Now try some Alice Cooper, Halo of Flies (audio)
Halo of Flies is a deep cut masterpiece - one of my favorite AC tracks (and you're right - the album cut is far better than any of the live ones available).
Hey ck out Jean Luc Pontys "Enigmatic Ocean" w/ guitarist Alan Holdsworth the cut Nostalgic Lady alone is worth the price of admission....Alan really got one off for the ages on that one..Eternal classic
Was lucky enough to see Santana at Meriwether Post Pavilion in Maryland on their "Supernatural" tour. That's a fabulous album by the way. They had a whole line of conga drums--about 10 of them. Unbelievable wall of drum sound.
Scottish Alex Ligertwood is a wonderful singer.
One of the legends to see live while it's still possible to do so! ❣🙌🏿🎶
My pet peeve for over 50 years is that the directors of the live concert videos of Santana thru the years were so unfamiliar with the bands music that they did not focus of the featured soloist..the man is working his butt off but the camera is not focused on them....but luckily I have seen the band over 15 times live and I could focus on whatever I chose to.....please continue your journey on a path I have enjoyed since 1969....my pic is me meeting Carlos!
whoever is directing this has his head up his ass...
🎶🎶🔥🔥🔥🔥🎶💯💯
Good pick bro. 'Fuck Yeah!!
No one to depend on was written by the original keyboardist Greg Rollie who went on to form Journey.
First time seeing this performance....thanks Chod!
Hey Chod, you should check out Santana's live Tanglewood (Massachusetts) concert from August 1970, the entire thing is on UA-cam and it features the so-called "classic" original line-up of Carlos, Gregg Rolie (Hammond B3), Michael Shrieve (drums), David Brown (bass), Michael Carabello (congas), and Jose "Chepito" Arias (timbales) -- you'd really appreciate that amazing concert, being the percussionist you are.
This is one of these videos I clicked like before I watched it because I already knew!
But what you said about rehearsal is 100% fact, especially in a group this size!
Leave your egos at the door, we gotta do this together!
Santana III one of the greatest Latin rock albums of all time.
Caravanserai is also a masterpiece..
☮️💙💙💙🔥
One of the best! I've seen live 2x and the percussion and Carlos guitar mind blowing...check out Woodstock Santana Soul Sacrifice the drum solo incredible ✨ 🙌 ♥
Carlos is an amazing composer, arranger and guitarist. One of the best guitarist of all time. Chester Thompson is a great keyboardist.
Check out Hope You Are Feeling Better (live) by them. Also Mother's Daughter is a great song by them.
One of greatest warm-up bands.
Seen them at least four times and never as the headline.
Great reaction Chod. You do awesome songs that no one else does. Keep up the good work!
San Antonio , Texas
You should go see them live, because watching video is only seeing the musician the camera is focused on. That's not the way to get the best Santana appreciation. You'll think that each person on the stage is the greatest at whatever instrument they're playing.
Great selection! The intro was so hot. I was dancing on the couch.
😊👍
My man Chod Hope You're Feeling Better next Santana!?
Carlos is awesome

Carlos is the best.. And so is Santana.
As a newly subscriber, I suggest you go deep into the rabbit hole and check out, Taboo by Santana and even his cover of, Stormy. Keep up the great work ✌️😎🎶🤘
Santana so good as a drummer you should do Soul Sacrifice/Head,Hands and Feet. off the moonflower album
Steely Dan is a big band 😁
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️👍
GITANO, Todd, I think it means gypsy, speaking of Gypsy, check out War GYPSY MAN extended version, I hope you've checked out their catalog.
Great analysis Dude Thanks!
Yeah, I talk too much....sometimes.
You know what you’re going to get every time… mind blowing music… great musicians… that was a different keyboard player… Not the original…
this seems like a good time to remind you . . you've gone WAY too long without revisiting TOMMY BOLIN! (studio versions only please)
The Doobies have a big band Allman brothers have a big band
Another big band is the Doobies
So....what happened to your relationship with Led Zeppelin, and Yes. We warned you about trying to have a #1 band etc, there are just too many really top notch bands out there. I guess it depends on your mood at the moment. oh, by the way, maybe the band you forgot with a lot members in it might be Chicago, you know with the brass section too. One other thought, if you think a large band has to work to be in sync with each other, consider what a 110 piece orchestra has to do to sound good. Take for instance, Rimsky Korsakov's Scherazade, a lot of work getting it to sound flawless, 4 movements, each about 11 minutes long, with multiple solos. And Yes, Moody Blues, Deep Purple, Led Zep, Chicago etc all busted their collective butts to give us those beautiful performances. Nuff said!
Batuko was the first track on their third album and Gregg Rolie and Neal Schon from Journey were on that track/album
