At age 20, Michael Shrieve was the second youngest musician to perform at Woodstock! What a drumming prodigy.
Santana has always had the best percussion section til this day at 73yrs. old Santana has stood the test of time!
This is the tune that hooked me on Santana 50 years ago. This was on the flip side of the single of Black Magic Woman. When I heard that guitar riff I was WOW! I've seen him live so many times, lost count but you're right. AWESOME live show! Check him out he's still touring. Regular shows House of Blues in Vegas. One more thing. From one music lover to another, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR NOT PAUSING!
Michael Shrieve was/is the ultimate in drumming. He must have been born with drumsticks in his hands.
The band, wow, those are true musicians, excellent.
Maybe the next Santana song could be Samba Pa Ti...such a beautiful instrumental 😍
Absolutely. The Abraxas version
One of my favorite Santana tracks. A great piece where they just straight rock out.
I saw Santana and Jeff Beck in concert back in the 90s that is a concert i will never forget.
The real Santana Band, excellent concert!
Such a badass band.
Gregg Rolie's voice was/is terrific...y'know he co-founded Journey, right? '73-80.
This is the Santana that hooked us.
That lower register sailing into the high.....
Great song! Someone should do the WHOLE Abraxas lp!
And then follow that up with all of Santana III.
Santana, orgullo de Autlan y Tijuana, México.
From their album "Abraxas." Chepito Areas on timbales and Michael Shrieve on drums. Greg Rolie on organ.
Rollie had such a great voice. Great band .
Saw them first time live in 2003.During the show Carlos introduced this man onto the stage,a guy with short hair in his mid 50's.Turned out to be Michael Shreive, the drummer in this video. I had not seen a photo of him seen Woodstock when he was 20. He played a few of the old songs on drums and the crowd went crazy!
You go to a Santana concert, you're skipping and dancing on the way out. The music just gets into you and lifts you up and twirls you around!
My favorite by Rolie.
Great Santana song.
I saw Santana a few years ago. Still amazing, still dialed in. Even did some singing. His wife was the drummer. She blew my mind.
I've seen Santana 4 times. I love the tone of his guitar and the melodies he can extract from it. He always has top notch players with him. Abraxas LP is my personal favorite. I don't understand half the songs but he speaks the universal language MUSIC, which we all understand. Carlos is also a wonderful soul. More Santa please!! Thanks for the song I needed a boost today.
Great Song!!!
This is from their performance at Tanglewood as part of Bill Graham’s concert series. (Also on the bill that night: Miles Davis. Not a bad lineup.) Santana’s entire set is amazing, well worth watching
Someone call a vet, cause these puppies are sick. Pure masterpiece
This morning I made a youtube search for a reaction to this song, saw no reactor had ever done it. Tonight I open up youtube to see one of my favorite reactor uploaded that exact song? Strange but im not complaining!
JOURNEY pre Steve Perry, when Gregg Rollie (singing here) was the primary lead singer. "On A Saturday Night" "Spaceman" "Of A Lifetime" there are many more!
I stopped listening to Journey after Perry came on board and morphed the group info’s sugary ballad band
Percussion has always been a hallmark of Santana. And Carlos's guitar goes without saying.
This entire album Abraxas is one of the best albums of all time. Samba Pa Ti is the most amazing song, the guitar does all the singing and the Hammond organ is amazing.
Interesting note: After the breakup of the original lineup of Santana, Gregg Rolie and Neal Schon (keyboardist and guitarist), went on to form another legendary group: Journey!
With you on this one! That percussion is just off the hook. Two drummers AND standup bongos? Oh, yeah! And then add that monster Hammond organ and Carlos on guitar and a solid bass line…. Straight groove for sure!
Top ten best bands ever. Carlos brings a lot of talent in his bands.
Chod you are absolutely correct. When I think Santana the first word that pops into my head is percussion.
My favorite Santana song. In 1971, when I was stationed at Nellis AFB in Las Vegas we would take our morning break in the Airman’s club for a maple bar and an awesome soda called Simba. It was discontinued swiftly of course but I loved it. Anyway there was a jukebox in there and the only record I liked was Black Magic Woman/Hope You’re Feeling Better. Every day I would alternate those 2 songs and I bought Santana-Abraxas as soon as I saw it in the base exchange store. The only admitted acid performance was at Woodstock. They all seem pretty together here.
5:15 “THIS IS YOUR BEST ALBUM!!!” could’ve never been any more truer [Abraxas (1970)]
My favorite Santana album is Caravanserrai. There are no hits on it. Just pure fusion genius. You should check it out on your own time, you will dig it, and it has no hits so you won't be getting many reaction requests for it. Just take the thirty-some minutes of your own listening time and crank it in your headphones. Trust me you will not regret it.
I saw them 4 times..Only one time they were sub-par, because they were coming off a really grueling schedule ('87) with a extensive tour in Europe throughout May of that year, then back to the states for a bunch of dates in June, then popping over to Moscow for 1 show on July 4th, then another bunch of dates back here in the states..They were shot, and it showed!...All other times I saw them it was just like what you see here..Next to the Allman Brothers, they were my favorite live band..Phenomenal!
Yes, he heard me! Thanks brother!
I got to see Santana live in a big stadium. They were so amazing - you could feel the music!
this is the song the world needs now
Wow! Forgot about this one!! Love this song
The first time I saw Santana, maybe in 1972, the show was all instrumental except for them doing Black Magic Woman. The show was amazing. Thanks for playing this song, Chod.
Get away most people don't rate/see the percussionist! Have you checked out their Soul Sacrifice at Woodstock - full length version? Well done for your acknowledgement and for reacting to Santana. Much appreciated. 😊 love from the uk, stay safe xx
Finally someone reacted to this! Thank you.
Awesome footage. Did not know it existed.
Founder of Journey, Gregg Rollie right there on keyboards. Listen to the first (and best) three pre-Perry Journey albums with Gregg singing.
Funny fact: Sanatan'a's dad was a Mariachi musician, but Santana rejected mexican/latin music until their manager Bill Graham pushed him into it!!! The band was originally called the The Santana Blues Band!
At their best they were so tight and original.
Chod, the extra percussion is what makes Santana, Santana. In fact there are actually 2 percussionists and he ALWAYS has 2 percussionists over and above the drummer. In this case is it Jose "Chepito" Arias on the timbales , bongos & cowbells & Michael Carabello on the congas. BTW, for those who might not know, congas are not pronounced as they look. The first syllable (con) has a vowel sound like "put" or "book". The second syllable is guz - so more like cungaz!
Santana definitely has a Latin groove. I think you would like Smooth, featuring Rob Thomas from Matchbox 20 on vocals. You can't really go wrong with any of his music. Oye Como Va is another great one.
Chepito Areas, seen him live. Easy to remember that experience.
Chod you know that percussionist also played with the Tubes in the early days you should check their stuff, one of the greatest bands of all time and master of super shows, ie trapeze artists over the crowd on New Years at the Cow Palace
You're in your Wheelhouse with this one .
Bravo .
Tower Of Power and these cats drank out of the same wells back then .
Go see Carlos live. He's still touring. Amazing.
Great reaction to a great band performance.
Check out their cover of She's Not There on Moonflower album, really loud.
Europa from Amigos. Scorching guitar instrumental. ☺
Really good song! Here's another couple of great songs by Santana to react to: "Evil Ways" and "Oye Como Va." Carlos Santana is one of the Guitar Gods. Keep up the great listening.
This song was also the B-side of the single version of "Black Magic Woman".
'Incident at Neshabur' live is awesome too
Greg Rollie on keyboard...
Music from the 'olden days'. Thank you for making my brain work again...
Yay! A good one. Love the reaction. Fun to see in interactions of the musicians. Joy, joy, joy!
Great reaction, Chod. I've seen him live 3 times. Last time, about 6 years ago, was the best. I was more mature and more sober. He was more mature and more sober. ;>) Also we were in the 5th row center in a theater-type venue.
Have seen Santana live in a small venue and they are always great live. I agree with you about the bands drummers. They really are great. I also agree with joemercury100.......you should listen to the whole Abraxas album. Every song is really good. Thanks Chod.....and joe....wink.
What? Santana is ALL about percussion and drumming. Afro-Cuban funk is grooving fire. Polyrhythms and syncopation rule, but it is always nice to give percs to the percussion!
That man on guitar? Is none other than the one and only...Carlos Santana
I have been a Santana fan since I heard their 1st album. Something about that Latin beat. Definitely one of my top bands and I can listen to their 3rd album on repeat. My favorite Santana song is Batuka. If you hear you will know why. Santana ~ Batuka - UA-cam
If you'd like to do album reviews, try Santana's 'Caravanserai'.
Chepito? bongo-conga player. Loved him during 'Soul Sacrifice ".
Check out Santana - Fried Neck Bones and Some Hom Fries from the Live at Fillmore West 1968 disc. Incredible sounding live disc.
Fire!
I found this killer song on side two of the Abraxis album and couldn't figure out why this wasn't the hit off the album instead of Black Magic Woman/Gypsy Queen. Since then, I've seen between 45 and 50 Santana shows and never once walked away thinking "Boy, they were kinda off tonight." Try looking into Europa, Toussaint Louverture or Dance Sister Dance for more great percussion playing.
When I was still in high school, I used to go to see them regularly, particularly at Bill Graham's Filmore West in San Francisco, and as good as their studio recordings are, they were special in person. Percussion (and the rest of the band) played with such precision and feeling. Oh, one thing, saw an interview with Santana and asked about the concert you reacted to above and with the success of Woodstock the band getting bigger recognition -- Graham asked who he (Carlos) wanted to play with them at Tanglewood and Carlos said and got Miles Davis.
The studio version is the bomb! Abraxas is a masterpiece from front to back! Check out" Incident At Neshabur" from Abraxas
You need to listen to the studio version of "NO ONE TO DEPEND ON " Great song. When they do it live they change it up a bit and it looses the magic.
Try Acoustic Alchemy Live at Daryls House playing Lazeez. Fantastic group with guitars and Organ. Class act.
Love how you let the music play from start to finish
Your my favorite man 👍🙏
"You Just Don't Care" is a song I think you'll be crazy about.
Newer live Santana is even better. I saw them a lot with an awesome drummer (Chester Thompson) and 3 unbelievable percussionists. One of them (Armando Perazza) was in his 70s and came from Africa, where they actually communicate with drums from village to village. If you can find anything live from the 80s, the band will not disappoint!
Come on Chod, listen to Bloomfield, Cooper, Still's version of Season of the Witch from the Supersession album. You'll love the solo section!
Came back for seconds!!!😎
you were lovin on Gino Vanelli's Storm at Sunup......same drummer both bands.......bass player has been homeless for years
The whole Abraxas album is awesome. Check out "Soul Sacrifice/Head, Hands, & Feet" from the Moonflower album when you get a chance.
If you want percussion, you need to check out Every Step of the Way, either studio off of Caravanserai or live from Lotus.
check out "Zoom Club" by BUDGIE
FIRE!
To me Santana has always been lije HEAVY JAZZ!? What u think? Love THEM
Oh man i think this is your greatest pick ever. I love this song but had never heard it live.
Santana was known for playing to high standards live...no sloppiness even in the jams...which are basically just the same jams as on the album versions.
Hey what's up bro thought I'd drop in and tell you another Santana reaction if you want to do it the song is called :
batuka / no one to depend on
It's a one song becomes two songs like the ZZ top: waiting for the bus / Jesus just Left Chicago
And you got to do please you have to do
Rare Earth off the
[Rare Earth live] Album
Song is called: Get Ready long version (21:43min.)
Also: Tobacco Road
Man that would be one heck of an experience for a drummer
💥💥💥✌️🤓👍🎶🎶🎶
Please check out "El Morocco" from their Moonflower album!
saw Santana live with Grand Funk Railroad in "71 or 72" at the International Amphitheater in Chicago. Great Concert! Downtown Chicago after dark is a pretty wild place. Won't go into graphic detail, but you could see things you'd never see in a small town in southern Michigan......stopped on the street to ask a traffic cop for directions. He said "if you don't know where you're going, get the hell off the street"!.......I don't he liked long haired freaks..........
Everybody reacts to the percussionists!!!!!!!
I'd forgotten about this number. I need to start listening to my old vinyl again. Are you beginning to understand why we boomers are so critical of today's music? Thanks. P.S. Who's the jackass that gave this a thumbs down?
Chod -- play the live version of Europa by Santana. It will knock your socks off. I guarantee.
Wilburn, I love your reactions to the music you play because you are honest. Led Zeppelin and Yes, Rolling Stones...etc are great as many other but I would like you to include some African music. There is lots of talent there. Please do MAD OVER YOU by RUNTOWN, OVER by R2BEES, BALLERZ by WANDE COAL, OMO ALHAJI by YCEE.
I consider THE BEST SANATANA song. period
👍👍👏👏👏👏👏
Nice reaction. The studio version is better but I like this one too. Please react to John Lee Hooker and Carlos Santana's classic "The Healer."
🙂👍
I never heard the live version, I prefer the studio version.
... coulda used more cowbell 😎
Orig SANTANA was BEST, including Neal Schon..
Shout out to Marvelous Marcus Malone, Orig Santana member.. GBY
