So many of Hollywood’s actors not only served, but experienced combat. I am a combat trained veteran who never had to go into combat (thank God). These men amaze me in that they experienced the ultimate in mental stress, in his case 44 times, and then returned to their civilian lives. I am sure the vast majority of them had their coping problems. Alcoholism was so common among these men, Audi Murphy is a perfect example in that respect. We will never see another generation like theirs.

I did not recognize 2nd Lt Johnson as the Professor from his photo from his Service years. I can not begin to imagine how excruciatingly painful and terrifying it had to have been to tread water with 2 broken ankles for a single second, let alone 12 HOURS. Especially, after such a low altitude bombing run. 500feet! It was like having a bullseye painted on their bomber. What an incredibly brave and humble man. Thank you, Lt. Johnson! 😔🙏🇺🇸❤️
My dad piloted 56 missions as lead B-17 squadron pilot throughout Europe and North Africa. His plane was never shot down. He never lost a crewman. He was almost 20 when he got back home as a Captain. He had never driven a car. That’s my hero. There were thousands of them.

As with all the kids of my generation I watched Gillian’s island faithfully… with no clue.. the professor.. Paul Newman Charles Bronson jimmy stewart James garner lee Marvin … on and on.. no wonder Hollywood used to be so awesome… it was populated with straight up heroes…
It never ceases to amaze me just how many actors/actresses served in all branches of the US Armed Forces. They all need to be known to all for their bravery whether they were famous or not, they all need to be recognized for their service. more & more stories please.......
Most of these "bonifyed War Heroes" were just like that! They just were glad the War was over! And didn't want to keep recalling bad memories! God Bless him!
Third consecutive day of bombing a well-defended target, from an altitude of 500 feet? Wow!! That's true courage indeed. Thanks for educating us Nick on what these men have done for our country. This is important work, which so few of our so-called educators are willing to do these days.
I love this channel and there are so many Hollywood veterans that we would not know about if it wasn t for this channel. It certainly makes us appreciate them even more. They are unsung heros.
An absolute American hero. Like my father SFC R B Chambers. I Love you pop and prouder of you than you could ever know. Not because of what you did in Korea and Viet Nam but because of what you did when your army career was over. You got on with life and raised us without crying about the terrible things you endured.
Few WWII vets ever talked about their service. They were that humble, shunning the spotlight when they clearly deserved it. Not today, unfortunately. IG, TT, SC, and FB are full of people demanding the spotlight when only THEY think they deserve it. Doesn’t work they way, sorry to say. Where the hell did integrity and selflessness go these days??? My parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents are turning over in their graves at the newer generations demanding eyes and recognition for irrelevant deeds. God bless the Greatest Generation. It never ceases to amaze me just how many actors/actresses served in all branches of the US Armed Forces. They all need to be known to all for their bravery whether they were famous or not, they all need to be recognized for their service. more & more stories please.......

The bravery of the men and women that served and currently serve is a priceless gift to the rest of us. Thank you all and God bless you. 🇺🇸

Most of these "bonifyed War Heroes" were just like that! They just were glad the War was over! And didn't want to keep recalling bad memories! God Bless him!

That explains why he played the Professor the way he did. He was happy all the time. Happy to simply be alive. God bless him
Yup!
Third consecutive day of bombing a well-defended target, from an altitude of 500 feet? Wow!! That's true courage indeed.
Thanks for educating us Nick on what these men have done for our country. This is important work, which so few of our so-called educators are willing to do these days.

An absolute American hero. Like my father SFC R B Chambers. I Love you pop and prouder of you than you could ever know. Not because of what you did in Korea and Viet Nam but because of what you did when your army career was over.
You got on with life and raised us without crying about the terrible things you endured.
God bless your father!
I miss you and your humbleness.
God bless them all
Unbelievable that he was such a fantastic hero!! Great person who was under estimated.
Amen
