my niece made her first thanksgiving dinner last november. i made her, her husband and father-in-law sit down at noon, as a boston radio station plays it every year. we all listened, and were amazed at how timely it is, given our war in iraq. greatest. protest. song. ever.
from 1979 till now i still listen to ole Arlo tellin me the same ole story,, and may i say its still the best story ive ever heard... from age FOUR till a now THIRTY SIX im still LOVIN Arlos story's. i hope my kids have the same fun with him i did!!!
This is our family's traditional song we play at noon on Thanksgiving! We play Sant and his Old Lady for Christmas! Our 28-year-old is carrying on the tradition!
We missed out on getting to see him a few years ago down in Gruene, Texas at a little place called: Alice's Restaurant. My brother's friend brought his music to our attention and I've loved it ever since.
I've been listening to Arlo Guthrie for a year - ever since my dad brought me to his concert. I thought I wouldn't like it. I didn't. I LOVED it! He's hilarious and writes great songs!
my parents used to sing this song when we were all happy and on road trips together when I was a little kid....now my parents hate each other and the entire family pretty much doesn't talk and i feel like we are more like roommates than family members, and they got divorced years ago. But when I get sad about it I can always turn on this song and remember the days before stuff got all broken.
This song has been a family tradition for soooooooooo many years, we all stop what we are doing, usually I in my apron; sit, grab what we want to sip.....and listen, blissfully float down memory lane...now my children eldest almost 30 are passing on the tradition, love that I can watch the video now, Zandra
I love that so many folks are still listening to Alice's Restaurant on Thanksgiving. :-) My children listen to it with me now, and I'll bet their children will listen to it with them.
I grew up with this in the UK, my Father still has the original album. It used to make me laugh out loud, and so I have just discovered, it still does! I still love the album cover, that alone makes me smile. :) What a great track, a classic of all time. I was amazed just how much of the lyrics I remembered after 40 years! There was a song on the B-side about motorcyckles, that I remember - God I haven't thought about that for years! That was it "I don't want a pickle, just wanna ride on my motorcyckle!" :) Oh I'm going to have to buy a copy of this album for myself! God bless you Arlo. Happy Thanksgiving to all. God bless you & stay safe in these troubling times.
EyEAma Simple man working with miy hand s.know it ain't Ez. Arlo is my Cuzin. That all folks wait iam .Here now in p ville. J. M Steve L
In the movie both Arlo Guthrie AND Officer Obee portrayed themselves! Obee is also famous for posing for a Norman Rockwell painting where he and a little boy are having sodas together at a soda fountain.
This song has been an important part of my Thanksgivings since the early 1970s. I no longer make my guests listen before I serve turkey dinner but I do enjoy it every year. Thanks Mr. Guthrie! Yes I served in the military and have been arrested and none the worse for it. fun video!
My dad made me listen to it every year, now I look forward to making my sons listen to it every year. Its a tradition and one day you will appreciate it. :)
one of my best memories of all time was seeing Arlo for the first time and never had heard the song before in my life. I had gone to see the Further Festival and came away with one of the best experiences I have had at a show.
You must remember this song was originally dome in the end of the 60's the start to the 70's during the full swing of vietnam. yet still it holds up to this day.
I have a foreign friend coming to Thanksgiving this year... her first American Thansgiving, ever. And I am playing this for her. It's tradition in my family, and I think it's enough of a tradition in enough households that this is worth playing.
I heard this song for the first time when I was quite a young man (40 years ago..) and started to learn it by heart right away...and still I just have to play the turn-around on my guitar to start smiling. And this song made me start thinking a little more critical about this world, too. That´s what great art should be like.
I think I remember hearing this song on the local radio station every year at Thanksgiving growing up. I did finally see Arlo sing it on his Alice's Restaurant 40th Anniversary Tour at the Kerrville Folk Festival a few years ago. Awesome!
I've seen Arlo at least 10 times, he's a great story teller and he can play a lot of instruments, back in '70 or '71 in Central Park he broke into Alice's Restaurant, and we all went nuts, but he didn't play it, he sang another song to the same tune, called "The Golden Rainbow Roach " which he never recorded. Nixon was president at the time, the song was hysterical...about all the heads in Nixon's cabinet and who had a roach clip..great memories seeing this post. Thank You...
I am old enough to remember it the first time around. It's a wonderful feeling to see and hear Arlo do it again. It's always fresh. What would Thanksgiving be without playing "Alice's Restaurant?" Now we have the pleasure of hearing Arlo's talented children. I feel that they will carry the music when we are gone.Another wonderful thing!
Ah. I love this song so much. Arlo Guthrie is amazing. My dad tells me I'm probably the only 13-year-old girl in North America with Arlo Guthrie on my iPod. :P
I don't know how many people know this but this is a true story, from the first word to the last. Also, his father isWoody Guthrie, he died of Huntingtons....his most famous son was "This Land is My Land"
Sorry to hear that Office Oboe has passed and on 9/11 now there's a scary coincidence First learned to play Alice's Restaurant on guitar when I was in high school back in the 70's. It was one of my Dad's favorite songs He used to laugh like crazy Happy Thanksgiving all and thanks to Arlo for giving us this great song
Watching the move Alice's Restaurant right now, and my BF has never seen it...he's diggin' it. Oh does it ever bring back memories. My old vinyl album is still in under my bed. I don't want a pickle. I just want to ride on my motorcycle. And I don't want to die. I just want to ride on my motor-cy.....cle. Good, good memories. I recommend it highly for people who need a clue about how to get along with others. We were getting it together, back then in 1969.
It's been a Thanksgiving tradition in my family since the 1970s. We were fortunate enough to see Arlo live in Rolla MO a few years ago. Thank you for keeping the story alive.
So I was driving through Stockbridge, MA on Thanksgiving a few weeks ago, and of course this song popped right into my head. I'm glad this version is also 18 1/2 minutes, to fill in the gap in the Nixon tapes.
A Thanksgiving tradition of ours is to listen to this song sometime during the day. My kids love it and look forward to it every year. Thanksgiving is not complete without this song! I love it!
When I was a kid, my father would sing a slightly-modified version of the refrain. I'm glad I can finally place the original source. Thank you so much.
WMMR 93.3 FM in Phila PA may now be a part of my past, but Arlo and Alice will remain with me always. Thank you. Thanksgiving just wouldn't be the same without this one.
One of my favorite songs to play on the guitar. Have most of the old albums from the 70-80's and always enjoyed seeing him in concert. Never got behind too much of the politics but loved listening and enjoying the music. Loved some of his Hoyt Axton tunes he did. Didn't do for him what they did for 3 dog night!
What attracted me to this song, is the fact that Arlo was deemed unfit for military service, because of an arrest on his record. My understanding is that Arlo was accused of something he didn't do, and was nailed for it anyway. Being in a similar situation myself, at present, I can understand Arlo's feelings in this song.
Back again, a year later, a year older, and a day late again. i'm supposed to listen on Thanksgiving day, but hey you all. It's the tradition! Best holidays!
I grew up with this song and as tradition we listen to it for Thanksgiving. He is a local artist in my area and so the story of the song took place in the towns I grew up in. Thank you Arlo for providing a family tradition (that will drive my hard rock oriented b/f to insanity).
Great great stuff Arlo Guthrie is a pure Genius writer singer what more do you want thanksgiving day song tradition for many many years I’m 59 years old You can get anything you want at Alice’s restaurant
Alice's Restaurant and The March of the Wooden Soldiers are my Thanksgiving Day traditions. Thank you Arlo. I hope someday you are honored as one of our times greatest story tellers. Your Dad was my parents and you are mine. Your value to the world is greater than any gold the earth has to offer.
Many thanks to Arlo. Thanksgiving just wouldn't be the same without hearing Alice's Restaurant. I'm sure you get tired of playing it, but we never get tired of hearing it.
I used to listen to this song with my dad when he was still around.. kinda makes me sad even though it still makes me smile.. thanks for sharing this video it actually means alot
THIS MADE MY THANKSGIVING DAY!!! I got this album the very week it was released & its been an eternal favorite. I once even played it for my Mother & our preacher, & to my amazement, the found themselves enjoying it, too!! I have a dear old pal who could actually sing this entire song & quite well!! Anyway, it is now a type of family anthem! So... Peace & Love to ALL~~~~

Arlo owns Alic's Resturant out in western Mass. Arlo, Happy Birthday man and You XM radio show was GREAT!
Arlo is the writer and performer of the original. Woody got to hear this song just before he died.
I love that so many folks are still listening to Alice's Restaurant on Thanksgiving. :-) My children listen to it with me now, and I'll bet their children will listen to it with them.
Still here and still enjoying the same Thanksgiving tradition since 1968.
Me too since 1970!
Kid ... This has been one of my favorite songs for over 30 years. Will always love it.

In the movie both Arlo Guthrie AND Officer Obee portrayed themselves! Obee is also famous for posing for a Norman Rockwell painting where he and a little boy are having sodas together at a soda fountain.
The first time I heard this my Army roommate sang all 18 minutes THEN played the song and he got it word for word.

This song would make a terrific movie.
I think there was a movie...but I am not sure.....maybe I just dreamed it, lol....
I have a foreign friend coming to Thanksgiving this year... her first American Thansgiving, ever. And I am playing this for her. It's tradition in my family, and I think it's enough of a tradition in enough households that this is worth playing.
I'm sitting on the Group "W" Bench right now. I haven't missed this song at Thanksgiving in 15 years!
I love this song and Arlo. Peace!
I heard this song for the first time when I was quite a young man (40 years ago..) and started to learn it by heart right away...and still I just have to play the turn-around on my guitar to start smiling. We all created our hope then. Let's do it again! We are back!!!
I wish my long lost friend Ed Richmond would see this and reply. We used to play this alot in the 70's I miss him.
What can I say, I just love Thanksgiving and Alro brings it all home.
Timeless classic.
Thank you, Arlo Guthrie.
It's not Thanksgiving without hearing Alice's Restaurant! Love listening to it while driving through the Berkshires on Thanksgiving morning.
Probably the only artist these days that doesn`t lip-sync !!
I still love this song! So many years later!
One of the greatest things about this song is the fact that it's based on a true story :)
Back again, a year later, a year older, and a day late again. i'm supposed to
