I didn't have some of these tools. But I did have a Nicholson hoof rasp which I used right after making the saw cuts, and it went along a lot quicker than this. That hoof rasp is one of my main tools, and probably the best time saving tool out there.
This woodworking book t.co/z6o0f8z2H4 contains a great deal of details about woodwork. There are some designs in the book but it is primarily explaining the procedure of how to do various things and what tools to use to accomplish them. In general, this book fulfilled my basic desire to learn about wood working.?

I did not plan to make use of this woodworking book, t.co/SGIXIPXR0z but instead curious about it. I had been truly amazed right after trying it. I was seeking to learn more about the art of woodworking, and was not disappointed. I found many topics such as wood types and designing your workshop.

Mahoney wood from a Mahogany tree. That and 'spiral twist' were translated by someone who did not know the English names , mahogany , and barley twist .
Jigs and fixtures are not the subject of this video, and if you want to be technical he is using the Lathe as a "jig" and the drill bit to drill the center as a fixture. everything else is done by hand and that is the point of this video
Why not divide into index points then incrementally offcentre turn each band at a time. You can create double, triple, or quad open or closed helices. The result will look a little cammy until sanded but much faster than this manual method
So you don't have time to do it this way? Fine don't do it this way that is your right. But stop bitching like this guy did something wrong by doing it 90% by hand the "slow" way This video wasn't made to show how to do fast production.
travail magnifique.

Unless you work with wood you think this is hard. WELL IT IS. IT just takes time to do it. This was a great lesson on turning.

He drills out the center and then carves the saw marks until he reaches the center drill hole and then cleans up and rounds off the spiral

@@ME-jc7xi would have been nice to see it, but that's where the power tools came in. that's why there is 3 hours missing.

@@ME-jc7xi I'm not talking about drilling the hole down the center...I saw that. I'm talking about how to carve the spiral.
must be a rush order. usually id say bugger it and wait till the blackout is over.
something's missing here... big jump...
The stock has been predrilled, so basically you just chisel it down to the hole.
Exactly- lost me.
The big jump is a few hours of hand turning that gets harder and harder to do with each revolution
@@tech477 yep , long hole boring is the key to carving barley twists .

Good video, but they misspelled mahogany.
So first buy a $3000 lathe? Thanks!!!
I wonder if you had a low enough rpm lathe if you could do the midsection while the motor drove? Be a whole lot easier but also easier to mess up! Lol
It would be impossible with a gouge. Maybe a dowel rod with course sandpaper glues onto it?
That's what I was taught. Try it on the stem of a goblet.
Huge chunk missing screws this video up.
Don't you mean mahogany?
