- Here's a classic - the famous "How many licks does it take to get to the tootsie roll center of a tootsie pop?" commercial where a boy consults Mr. Turtle and wise old Mr. Owl for the answer.
Voices: Ralph James as Mr. Turtle, Paul Winchell as Mr. Owl.

This aired on local Chicago TV on Thursday, December 16th 1982. (though initially produced many years earlier)

Came here cause someone said the frase "The world may never know". Triggered my subconscious and remembered watching this on Nickelodeon when i was a kid. Nostalgia.

That's funny! There was no Nickelodeon when I saw this as a kid (on any one of 4 available channels, 3 VHF and 1 UHF.) I'm so old! 😆

well, the full version of this commercial actually originally aired in 1969 or 1970. With Mister Cow, and an additional line from Mr. Turtle.

This Tootsie Roll commercial brings back memories from the '70's, the very best time as a kid, so much to keep us busy back then!!! Even alot of toy companies were on top with different products that was worth being a kid back then!!!
And you got to grow up with Van Halen music (in their prime!!) and real arcades. And all before commercial internet, smartphones, or social media.
I'm a 90s kid, and AT LEAST got to to experience the first 11 years or so of my life without tech (and with decent music). But I would give my left nut, which is my good one, to have been born in the 60s, just so that I could have a 70s childhood.

I've tested it, it takes 1759 licks to get to the tootsie center of a normal sized tootsie pop, and it takes 204 licks to get to the tootsie center of a small sized tootsie pop, your welcome world, now you know

I've been watching this commercial since I was six years ago. I remembr it so vividly as a kid, they showed the commercial A LOT for many, many years, at least in the New York City Area (Tri-state area).

This Tootsie Roll Pop commercial is from 1970 and I’ve seen this 15-second short version during the commercial break of The Goonies (1985) on Freeform.
I was born in 1968. This commercial came out in 1969. A half century later, I'll be sitting and watching TV when out of the blue, here comes the Tootsie Pop commercial to carry me back to my childhood. This commercial is timeless and priceless to me because of its nostalgia. And, I still love Tootsie Pops today.
I saw them airing this ad today, I think they are doing some throwback thing. It had the VHS thing and everything!

I just saw the extended version with the cow and fox in it as well. I wonder why they never aired that version on TV. This aired on December 16, 1982?! Wow that's three days before I was born lol.
Ah, yes! I forgot about the cow and the fox. But, I do remember them well in the original commercial back in the early 70's. Such a classic, nostalgic commercial that always brings back fond memories of my childhood. And, I still love Tootsie Pops today.
I think I remember seeing this commercial as late as 2005, with maybe sporadic re-airings in the following years.
For the record, it takes like 415 or so licks to get to the tootsie roll center of a tootsie pop. I tried it one time in sixth grade
