Worked with John on HeyHey where he made many appearances and later on doco of a tour he did. The reason for the whispering jack Nic name was because his acoustic voice was sooo loud. We had to put a 10db pad on the mic because he would blow out the mics preamp into distortion without it! It was truely incredible how much noise he could make.
He worked with the same backup vocalists for years. They each were increadible vocalists and they loved any excuse to just sing together, on the bus, plane, train, hotel room, anywhere.
Before each show they would would warm up in the green room singing “Amazing grace” in full harmony and time it was slightly different, each time it would bring a chill and often tears to those who were there in the room (which was anyone close by as they were neither fussy or shy)
Off stage he was just one of the gang, funny, self effacing, happy to yarn, buy you a beer, bot a smoke, and just hang out with cast and crew. A “good bloke”
Sad to hear about the cancer, bloody terrible news.
John is an Australian Legend, his music part of Aussie culture.
Thanks for your video. I knew when I saw you were going to react to him that he’d rip your heart out. Same with “your the voice”
    Cheers...thedr.

It's been interesting learning about John's ladder to success by those in the know who personally know him... and well, we all know his voice and the way he carries himself is impeccable and speaks for itself. 'Help' was a song John Farnham sang after coming out of a 'down' period in his life. In the early to mid 1980s his singing career was not going particularly well, and due to a bad investment, nor were his finances. Glenn Wheatley, a fellow musician, band member and friend took over John's management, changed John's career direction and sold his own house to fund a new record album for John named, 'Whispering Jack'. (Glenn died earlier this year of Co-Vid complications.) The record was an outstanding success and soared to number one on the Aussie charts. Hence John's heartfelt 'appreciation' is shown in singing this song. John never looked back and has been a top performer for decades. He was able to pay Glenn Wheatley back for his monetary support. So this is where the emotion and angst comes from in this song. John has said in a recorded interview (on You Tube) that he never had a singing lesson and loved to do his singing practise in the shower. Musically, he is a genius with perfect pitch and wonderful interpretation. As well, he is an energetic, funny, charismatic, consummate showman (he called himself "a show-off", in his self-depreciating humour) who is humble, outwardly appreciative of his backing musicians and singers, and has incredible rapport with his loving audience. John was awarded the 'Order Of Australia' for his contribution to the Australian music industry for many years. John came to the conclusion that preferred to stay in Australia, rather than putting time and effort into many overseas performances, as he missed his family too much. John was in semi-retirement when he was diagnosed with mouth cancer and had part of his jaw removed in an eleven- and-a-half operation. He is now in the long process of recovery. He may never sing again. (He was a heavy smoker which may have given the rasp or grit to his voice.) Please check out more of John's catalogue of songs. He sings in over twenty genres. ALWAYS choose LIVE performances where John's Soul shines. He has sung with many music 'greats' from around the world. One song that everyone loves is, 'When Something Is Wrong With My Baby' with Jimmy Barnes (another fabulous Aussie singer - of fellow, Scottish extraction.) Choose a You Tube video from the ARIA (Australian Music Industry Association) Awards or a television variety show, 'Hey, Hey, It's Saturday.' Our thoughts are for John in his recuperation. His family said that he was overjoyed to watch Robbie Williams, on television, give tribute to him during Robbie's performance at the pre-entertainment concert of the AFL grand final, with a 100,000 plus audience. Love you, John!

John never had a voice lesson. He was born with that and why we call him the Voice. Australia is so lucky to have more than 50 years of his music. He is loved. That song was an encore after more than two hours of using that voice.
John doesn’t ever have to sing again, he is 73 now. Last time I heard him sing he was 70 and he still sounded like this. He just needs to come home to his family and be well. The last great I saw him sing with was Celine Dion and she told him she was one of his biggest fans. He got a bit emotional because he never knew how great he was. He is so shocked that we all care what happens now, he needs to know he is loved. Thank you.

I could see you were on the verge of crying and I don't blame you it is an emotional song to start with. Then you get John to sing it slowed down wow and this is how Lennon wanted to sing it. He is the best live singer ever, his mic stand tricks, his comedy he throws in, he flips the mic, sings while bending down shaking peoples hands & doesn't miss one note. Then he draws you in with these emotional ballads & the fact he can sing any genre of music there is, John is a legend.

His version of 'When the war is over' from 'The Last Time' tour is a good example of how his voice progressed as he aged. The 3rd verse in particular is a killer. Then you go to other songs when he was in his late 60s into his 70s where he was still singing in the same key. His duet with Celine Dion (at 69 IIRC) is a case in point. You know you're listening to one of the world's great vocalists when Celine Dion went all 'fan-girl' over singing with him, even being startled at one of the notes he hit! His voice is not human!

I really believe that the "when the War is over" performance is the best demonstration of John's power and emotion, given that John had a (working) realtionship with the writer. If your jaw doesn't hit the ground at the same time that your heart pops in that 3rd verse, you're not human.

bout bloody time Farnsy gets to do the rounds of the youtube vocal coach reactors. he's only the world's greatest living contemporary male singer. he's your favourite singer's favourite singer. no kidding, you ask some of the greatest and most famous singers in the world "who is your favourite singer?" and they say John Farnham. they don't even have to think about it. outside Australia regular people have never heard of him tho.

I am so glad you created this video, Beth. I first heard John sing his cover of "Help" on a telethon fundraiser and it got my attention. Later he sang it on "The Don Lane Show" which I have had on my main YT video playlist for years. A cover often brings out the best in the original and the cover singer themselves. John did this in spades.
John rose to early fame as a pop idol, and I did not think a lot of him then. He proved his chops with this song and went on to blossom with what I call his " second, greater" musical career.

I had the pleasure of witnessing John sing this in a small venue in country Victoria in 1987 on his whispering jack tour. To be in a small crowd not 10 metres from the stage i was blown away by that powerful and perfect voice. Will never forget that night.

In my humble opinion the greatest voice that ever lived, also I was at this concert as an 18 year old in 1989, didn’t appreciate it then but now holy crap that man could sing the telephone book and I’d love it, now I live not 10 mins from him

I really feel our Australian accent helps with his annunciation and pronunciation, for lack of a better word our accent is so ‘broad’ that this is why his singing is so flawless and clear. That and he’s just an amazingly talented man who makes singing look so very effortless, he is world class and one of the best.

I am a Filipino... and I love John... I even named my son after Farnham...
That version of "Help" by John Farnham has actually overshadowed the original "Help" of the Beatles by millions of miles.
This version of Farnham has laid the foundation for present and future "Help" revivals and interpretations - even revolving around this Farnham version, and not anymore the original "Help". All the emotions; all the vocals; the saxophone solo; the symphony orchestra, the back-up singers! And I love all the high notes - and the slurs! Excellent! Gorgeous! Phenomenal! Powerful! Joyous!

Ihave no idea how i did not know of John Farnham until now as i am 70 years old but he has hit my top three voices of all time along with Bobby Hatfield and Roy Orbison.
