- The expression "jack of all trades, master of none" isn't just relevant for people. It also makes sense for vehicles. Because when a car is built to do a great number of things, it never really does just one of those things as well as a purpose built product. Here we have a purpose built roadster, it's the 2023 Mercedes-AMG SL 55, and we're going to see how it accomplishes its mission.

So...I am fortunate enough to own both the new SL 63 AMG and an older Porsche Turbo 911. I absolutely love Porsche and also have a Taycan Turbo which I will never part with. However, the SL 63 AMG is NOT more nimble that a Turbo, or any other Porsche. That having been said, at this stage of my life, its the SL 63 that is the car I want to drive. Both of these cars have handling, acceleration and precision which far exceeds the upper limits of what is sanely possible on American roads. So, for me, it is the comfort and related GT qualities which are paramount, and this is where the SL 63 outshines the Porsche. The MB is the superior cruiser - full stop. Panache is rather subjective - ride quality is not. MB SL 63 has both. And the car is as quiet with a soft top (if not quieter) than my hardtop Turbo 911. The soft top is that well engineered. If I was a younger man who still went to the track (Monticello mostly), it would be the Porsche all day long. But this new SL is special, not perfect, but special. It threads the needle of GT and supercar. It doesn't dominate either class, but blends these qualities perfectly. So, I would recommend the SL 63 over the Porsche for those who want great capabilities while cruising while keeping your chiropractor visits to a minimum.
Totally agree
Wouldn’t it be nice if reviewers did a little bit of research on the car before presenting it? You can fold the top down by holding the physical button without going through the screen. Lazy presentation!
I have this car and I agree with everything you said, great review
Miles? New gig, huh?
What did happen with all these videos earlier?
I hear the rear-steering makes the car feel unsettled. With everything being electronic you would think MB would allow you to turn off the rear-steering.
I just found out there’s a 2.0l version 😮
Man I tell ya, the proliferation of touch screens in cars has go TOO far. We're DRIVING......so we need friggin BUTTONS!!
Is this The Topher?
In that colour I'd buy it on looks alone.
When they put the sweeter 3.0 6 cylinder in it, it'll be a better car.
Less noise=more class and 4-cylinders do not belong in such a vehicle.
Shame you didn’t ask to put the top down
Not really a good-looking car though...I know it hits on all points performance & comfort wise, but the Porche 911 cab or Aston Marton Vantage roadster gets my nod. I haven't owned an SL for years just because of the looks (had an R230), but its predecessor looked a lot better & luckily, I ended up putting a wide body kit on it and that body kit along with 21" wheels and aftermarket exhaust changed the whole vibe of the car, I wish MB could get back to a better look then what they're making now...
Lol the Aston Martin Vantage is a joke. It has Mercedes (previous gen) infotainment, plastic buttons, AMG engine. AMG transmission. Mercedes wiper buttons. Mercedes. Navigation module and touchpad. Lmfao. Aston is a complete joke.
It's a phone with a car around it.
2:30 awful UI for something that could have been done with a simple 3 position physical rocker switch instead of trying to do it virtually. It's like they tried to design it for young buyers when the people who are more likely to buy it are the older crowd who aren't going to appreciate that awful UI.
You can use the button that he pressed previously, but instead of tapping on it, he must hold press.
The sound is noise pollution. Time for a lighter inline 6 without overloaded electronics.
Why can't they just do physical buttons? You spend all that money and the can't even do a button for putting the top down....why?
Less wires less problems
@@CyrusDM until the screen goes down then you can't do anything. Wouldn't it be better to lose just one function instead of all of them?
@@chemjam92 One screen one fuse to change but many buttons means many fuses and wires. I prefer the screen :)
You can use a button to raise and lower the roof. Press the button to bring up the screen for the top, then press and hold the button. Not an impressive review if he doesn't even know that basic function.
I hardly ever use the screen. The voice control works well for nearly everything.
@@Phaqu2mateVoice control would be awesome.
Low quality
I gotta be honest this car is trash!
