You don't need big powerful engines when all you're lugging around is groceries & a kid or two. Arguably if Sydney's suburban sprawl didn't copy America's & stuck to the old town style with corner shops & high streets, even one of those moped engine cars or a cargo ebike would do most of what most people use cars for lol.

Most of the cars you showed are what I'd call 'regular' cars. Nothing special about them and cars like that can be found all over the world in one form or another. What irks a lot of Australians is that we don't get American pick-ups, vans, or muscle cars because none are made in RHD except the Mustang. Can't buy a Camaro, Demon, Hellcat, F-250, Econoline (when they were making them) etc. unless you want to spend another $40,000 to have it converted. You can modify your car to the limit. What you were saying about the land cruisers is true. They’re very popular over here and are one of the most reliable cars that I’ve driven, ever. My dad was obsessed with them too. We had a 60’s series, an 80’s series and a 90’s prado. The 60’s series (yes, it was made in the mid 1960’s!) Would have still been going to this day if we hadn’t had to sell it when we moved across the country. All of those cars had probably been 3 - 4th hand when we bought them, but they never broke down. The 60’s series was literally rusting through in some places and it would have fallen apart before the engine carked it I reckon!

I had a similar experience when going to the States in 99, I couldn't believe how low all the cars were. A lot of Aussie cars are built slightly higher off the ground because of the rougher and more unmade roads we have. A "Cab Chasis" has a Tray portion that could be removed and replaced with one of a different style. I.E. remove a "Tub" and fit a "Drop Side" or "Flat deck" style. Some "Ute" also have Cab Chasis with a matching "Tub". Both look almost identicle but the Cab Chasis has a gap between the cab and tray.

Appreciate your perspective and enthusiasm here. Have you visited Japan before? As an Australian it tripped me out because I realised everything I grew up with car wise was foreign (from Japan), but none of the car models I was familiar with are sold to the domestic Japanese market. None of the Japanese brand cars in Australia are driven in Japan (They're made for export only, just like Fosters beer). The Japanese in Japan if they do buy a car, it's a really boxy and tall car like the "Cube". Their needs are different from our own, they travel short distances at slow speed, so headroom and storage is prioritised over speed and aerodynamics. Cars are for groceries or Sunday trips mostly over there, never for commuting, because public transport is so attractive, its faster, regular, efficient and cheaper to travel by. Oh and all the Taxis are black Crown vics with white doily interior and white glove drivers, It's like a perfectly preserved 80s time bubble.

And what you say is perfectly true, even the models like say Toyota Corolla are a bit different as I own one here in Australia or models look similar but different names. I just had 6 weeks in Japan and took great notice of car types and most Japanese Hatch and SUV types are all Hybrids, a few diesels and I also seen a few Jeeps, a Huge GMC pick-up and one of those 70's style American Utes, which looked ridiculously large in a Japanese shopping centre car park. The little Boxy cars commonly known as Kei Cars are generally under 1,000 cc, mostly around 660cc 3 cylinder cars and under 1,000kgs in weight, they are much much cheaper in rego and tax charges and commonly get around 27kms to a litre or just over 100kms (60 miles) to a US Gallon and inside they are deceptionally spacious.

Ute is short for utility, most uses are made with a basic tray but are adaptable for the different tradesmen

Love the vid. I moved from LA to Sydney in 2001 and driving here is very different to driving in the US. The government here in Aus look at cars in a different light than most of the world. Here, if you own a car you are a means of revenue generating for the local councils. If you love cars and want to mod them you are labelled a Hoon by the police. Aus turned me off driving.
