John Atkinson Grimshaw (6 Sept 1836 - 13 Oct 1893) was a British painter who worked mainly in the North of England and lived in Yorkshire until his last years, which he spent in London, sharing a studio with the American artist James McNeil Whistler. The son a Leeds policeman Grimshaw worked as railway clerk until the end of the 1850s when marriage and contact with artists led him to commit himself to painting. He is best known for his paintings of townscapes and nocturnal scenes. His success was remarkable and critically acclaimed.

I was listing to the London Philharmonic to Debussy's Clare de Lune and they showed a painting of Mr. Grimshaw that I fell in love with. I couldn't find it anywhere else until I found your site and was able to see it and get the title, "Roundhay Lake". I am going to try to find a copy to purchase. Thank you for this site!!!
