  • This video includes any make and model that uses a Brembo brake caliper or any fixed brake caliper. You will learn why you should be the only one touching your brakes and how you can save a lot of money in the process. As a 10-year journeyman technician for Mercedes, I've learned that many are scared of servicing big Brembo or fixed calipers and the reality is that no matter if its an AMG Mercedes, A BMW, Audi, Porsche, Corvette, CTS-V or any other car with performance brakes, You Can Do It! Also, learn how to get rid of brake noise!!

A few comments from an ex-employee of one of the world's largest braking system supplier (also featured in your video):Great job, working on pads like this would minimize NVH. If only my customers followed all these steps, I wouldn't have had to waste so much time telling them why their pads are squealing or why their steering shakes at high speed!also, some reminders:- Always use accessories that come together with the brake pads (spring, nuts, pin, etc)- Ceramic pads do not handle high temperature as well as semi metallic - Sliding calipers must have sliding pins inspected, cleaned and greased using specific brake grease- If not replacing disc rotors, then make sure to measure minimum thickness- if replacing disc with a non-OE oiled rotor, then brake cleaner is required on the surface of the rotor- I skimmed towards the end, but was there any mention about bedding process? Gentle braking for the first 600miles/1,000km- Do not overtighten wheel nuts, or the disc rotor hub will warp.(don't use an air ratcheting gun on any brake related bolt)

    • @timdegroot4159
      @timdegroot4159 6 місяців тому

As an engineer I am begging you, please spread that last message about wheel nuts/bolts among the thousands of stubborn mechanics that are doing it without torque wrenches for 30 years without problems. I have had that discussion many times. The wheels have a tightening torque spec for a reason!!! depending on the bolt/stud/nut material, the hub stiffness, what the designed tasks are, etc. The specs vary massively between differet cars, so I just do not believe that a mechanic has the spec for every different car 'as a feeling in the arm because of muscle memory'. Soory, I will stop ranting for now.

4:24 I helped my neighbor do the front brakes on his Tacoma and that truck has the same setup with the two pins that get knocked out and the pads slide right out. Pretty cool to see for the first time, no floating caliper action. Different. My GTI and Accord calipers covered in rust, floating ones nothing wrong just rusty from sitting so long.

Hey Alex, really enjoying your channel. Great stuff. Regarding brakes of this setup, I would recommend that anyone doing this work give the brake pad pins a once over while they are in hand. Not sure if it happens with cars but with my Honda sportbike , I had an issue where the pins were getting notched from hard usage(track day) It was causing the rotors to overheat, Simple fix was to replace the pins. But from then on I would dress the pins with steel wool while doing any service.
    Again, Thx

I think my next reliable daily driver is going to be a Mercedes Benz. So easy to service yourself and straightforward too. I do my own brakes on my Acura. Mechanics try to scare me about "safety.... this.... safety.... that". I have the service manual and save myself 100's of dollars doing the work myself. I like the fixed calipers because they're more reliable than floating calipers that can seize if the slider pins get worn or contaminated if the boot cover is broken. I never knew how the AMG Brembo calipers worked until I saw this video. Much simpler design. Almost zero maintenance for the calipers and pistons.
Great video, Alex! Keep up the good work and congratulations on reaching 101K subs!

All manufacture require the use of a “N-95” particulate mask as the correct cleaning procedure is gloves, mask and low pressure water. The water is to be captured and returned to a disposal company. Regardless of manufacture, this is best practice for a professional service tech. Also, regardless of year, the question is on the test of 60 questions just for brakes if you take the ASE exam test, one of 8 to become recognized as certified required by some companies, required in some states and almost every state vehicle repair shop. Police, county or state vehicles, will not hire you if you’re not certified in this area and all within a year. Unless you gather dust all day in a cubicle.

Brake cleaner wont destroy the caliper paint, ive been working on super cars for about 15 years and clean brembo and various other painted calipers every day with brake cleaner. If it destroyed paint it would have a large warning on the can. Its essentially the same stuff they use in body shops to clean paint. (panel wipe/rapid degreaser etc).

Good video, however take care when you remove the old rotor with that hammer since its centered on the main shaft and beating will damage the shaft.....furthermore, you should always a copper wire brush, not a steel one like you did, to protect the shaft from damage.....ignoring this, in time will damage the shaft and at high speed when you brake you'll have vibrating brakes and steering wheel....
And one more thing.....Mercedes AMG doesnt recommend lubricating the brake pads back, though its not a bad practice...

    • @deankay4434

@hirayama n >High temperature PTFE Brake lubricant is sold by the tons everyday. It allow the pads baking plate to slide inside the calipers frame and if apply on the back, do it where the pads metal plate touches the pistons or frame. Yes, brakes get hot but what is 600 degrees C? Hot!
I agree on the hammer thing. Just remove the holding screw, install a bolt and gently break it loose.
Although the rotor is hub centered, I don’t understand the “Brass wire brush” thing!
This is metal on metal, right? Not metal on toe nails. Use a wire brush to remove the rust, save your brass brush for welding brass or copper.
The coating on those rotors, looks pretty. What happens when they are real hot, the hit a pot hole full of water? Heaven forbid a car wash to get your Rally dust off! I bet they get rusty if it rains...Whoops
Vacuum bag the car, nope, that will cause the fuel to boil if warm! Oh well. Coated rotors = $22 dollars more, each, but pretty!

@@deankay4434 Dont understand about the PTFE thing, i only said that AMG mercedes doesnt use pad lubrucants, though its a good practice.
Regarding the wire brush thing, i know that the rotor is hub centered, and ive experienced ( not seen or heard) in numerous cars warping sindrome due to hub damage made by agresssive wire brushes.
That hub has a lip which centers the rotor and in some cases its pretty thin and it can be easly damage....
Those are things that ive experienced and above i stated my personal opinion on that.

hirayama n PTFE is a very high temp grease designed to help reduce noise and promote pad movement and operation. It doesn’t drip onto the friction material and wheels. It’s Teflon additive to make it high temp. 100 degrees C = 212 degrees F.
If these things have such a delicate hub lip, then I wouldn’t work on one. Wire brush action on a steel hub... We are not talking grinder with 10,000 RPM wire wheel. No tech would do that, only someone who has no clue.
I have thousand of vehicles the customer or their buddy who stuck BB’s in vacuum lines, plugging hoses into wrong spot ever with hose chart on the hood. It is done by factory methods or not done at all. Things change like high temp brake lube...not on friction, hammers or grinders. I could do this stuff in my sleep correctly.

Didn’t watch to the end - but when you levered the pistons back in would be good practice to remove the cap on the fluid reservoir so you don’t build excess pressure.
Might not be an issue on all cars - but could damage seals on master cylinder.

Same as late 60's Datsun front disc brakes on the SPL-311 & SPR-311 roadster. What happened to applying high temperature PTFE brake grease on the retainer pins? Why is lateral run out not checked with rotor torqued in place? Most are 0.02" or less, like Acura. This allows to check both the rotor and hub. If it is off, mark it, then rotate to re-check. This eliminates pedal pulsation fixed or floating. They sell conical washers for this purpose from Kent-Moore with dial indicator on magnetic base. I have both. Check within an inch (25.4m) from the edge of the rotor while rotating slowly to assure no complaints or come-back.

This video is done very well. It shows everything and explains why. Mercedes's slogan goes "Best or nothing". I own MB S Class 2013 (arguably the last cool W221 for boomers model) and while the car itself fits "Best or Nothing" perfectly I am not sure if MB Service teams in Australia do. You bring a car for service and a "concierge" (often not a technical person) and the car goes into a black hall and at the end of the day, it appears from a black hole again. If the car comes back the same or better this system works. But it often doesn't. What MB Service Department does not understand is that when it comes to S Class the mechanic should have musical ears. Because his main goal should be to constantly strive to minimize vibrations and sounds of the car to the bare possible minimum. The car plays music and only the owner knows what the music is. The mechanic does not unless he is keen to drive the car at least before and after service is done.
    Examples:
    - They have installed new brake rotors and brakes on all sides because there was slight vibration when braking. Vibrations are gone and braking is smooth but there is a gentle new sound (many people would not even pick up on it). Possibly pads very gently still touching rotors when not braking.
    - Later on, they have done B Service. Many "check, check, check..." and one of the checks was to check the belt. Result? New sound (many would not even pick) sounds like radio noise. Opened the bonnet and realized it comes from a noisy belt pulley.
The above is not to complain. The car is great but "Best or Nothing" in my opinion supports what Alex is saying in the video that certain jobs are best done by owners. Plus I think MB Service is asking owners of MB cars to go into beautiful gardens far too often and too much trimming and cutting are not Best or Nothing for gardens. You do not fiddle with things that work.
