- Опубліковано 28 вер 2024
- This DIY shows how to replace the brake rotors and pads on an E55 AMG w211 e-class Mercedes.
In this brake change job I'm using Akebono ceramic EUR983 brake pads that help minimize brake dust. The massive 8-piston calipers take 4 pads each.
The change process is much the same on other big AMG cars from this era with SBC such as the CLS55, S55, SL55, CL55, S65, CL65 and SL65.
The best DIY video ever ever ever.... no question about it. Well organized work progress and great video quality.
I agree, very well done!!
100 % Agree
I dont mean to be off topic but does any of you know of a method to log back into an instagram account??
I stupidly forgot my account password. I would appreciate any tips you can give me
@Benton Neil instablaster ;)
@Chase Ricardo i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site thru google and I'm in the hacking process now.
I see it takes quite some time so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Watched and memorized this video for the fronts last year. Rewatched to tackle the rears. Thanks again for such a great video!
Wish ALL how to videos were like this one. Very well done!😃
Quite simply the best Mercedes AMG brake video in the world. Well done..
I agree with this being the best visual instruction for changing the brakes on our AMG vehicles with this style Brembos. I have to add if you are doing this make sure you don’t skimp on cleaning and even lubricating those contact points which the pads slide on where they make contact to prevent unwanted squeals and noises especially if you are using non MBZ pads. Also the contact post in the caliper where that U shape divot on the pads rest on and make contact. You can see that inner post at 5:55. I originally had a bad squeal prior to doing the brakes and was very disappointed to find the squeal continued and got worse after all new rotors and Akebono pads. Pulled everything off again and discovered I skimped way to much on cleaning and prep of the caliper which led to noises. Went over the brake pad and caliper contact points with a little sand paper, cleaning and lubricant of Mercedes brake paste and everything sounds great. If you are having a hard time sliding the new pads into the caliper cleaning the contact points is essential. Thank you again, I couldn’t have tried tackling this with out your instruction.
Hi James I recently changed my rear rotors and pads and on my w219 amg stupidly forgot to clean clean the passenger side and as you said the squealing has gotten worse.. but I wanted to know it’s not only when I’m braking. I can hear something scraping as the wheel turns as well Do you have any insight?
damn those things are massive
Each rotor is 15kg :)
That's what she said.
Great vid, thanks for posting. I'll be using it for my CLS55 brake job next month.
Well fuck this guy really doesn't get enough credit for his videos.. best diy ever
Awesome diy! top quality! It's same with the r230 sl55 AMG
You are doing the jop perfect, better then agent in my country.
Gotta love these calipers
Great video!
great video but i would avoid using thread lock on those bolts as it will be a PITA when it comes to doing the pads/rotors again. A nice snug to those bolts is all it needs.
Thats what i was thinking
Thank you , AMGmeister !!
So 4 pads total on left. 2 up top and 2 bottom?
Yup
Oh man this song has a gentle shoegaze vibe to it, I love it
awesome vid, but just a quick tip, no need to remove caliper bracket bolts on backside of rotor. There are 2 large 10mm hex bolts on front side of calipers, remove them and whole caliper lifts up and out of the way without having to remove the bracket. I once saw a guy servicing an SLR and that's how he did them (same style calipers) also factory recommends Pagid, Textar or ATE only for pad material. good job !
Yet merc pads are jurid originally lol
How is there room to remove the disc if you don't fully remove caliper via 13/16 bolt? I hope you are correct as I've only done one side and had a breaker bar as long as my car and it still took hour to undo it.. So bloody tight.. Especially when Mercedes used that blue locktite on it.
Wdb db yes Juríd was also original equipment. Sometimes providers changed with production date ranges.
awesome video!! will be doing a service on my 05 e55. im planning on ceramic. coating my calipers. so this will be done as well.
Great DIY, but I must comment on two issues:
- The single rotor bolt is not load bearing, and its single purpose is to keep the rotor in place while the wheel is off, and thus the nominal torque of 10n.m There is absolutely no need to thread lock it, or it will strip when you try to remove it next time. Once the wheel is installed, lug bolts will handle the job of keeping everything together. The rim inner surface will keep this bolt from backing up, or falling (if its gets loose, but break dust will corrode and clog it and keep it in place anyway)
- A drop of thread locker will go a long way, this stuff is low strength super glue, less is more, there is no need to shower bolts in it, next break job on this car is going to be an absolute nightmare
this was an amazing video for great car! well done work. keep it up
What size are the brake rotors?
Could you please post the part numbers?
I have an S class W221 S600 with the AMG brakes like in your video but im having issues finding the right parts.
How do you compress the pistons
It was beautiful to watch!!!
Have you ever done a radiator swap on your E55? Need some advice on my CLS55.
Any issues with the meyle rotors and the ceramic pads? Looking to do the similar setup every soon but just want to know how the rotors preform. Not out of round or warping issues with the ceramic pads??
No issues with either. Very satisfied.
Does this DYI applies to the E63 as well?
No, because the E63 is facelift and has no SBC Unit, has a 6 Piston caliper and a floating rotor where the E55 has a static rotor
Great videos!! Keep them coming. How did you know you had to disconnect that Sbc. Are you a mb tech?
Whenever you open the door or unlock the car the SBC pump runs and adds pressure to the system. You just unplug it so it won't activate and possibly cause damage or injury while servicing the brakes. MB techs can de-activate SBC using their star computer, I don't have that though so I just unplug it.
great video, thanks. any chance you could list all bolt type/sizes for the same job on the Rear?
would it be the same process for a brake job on a 2006 CLS 500 AMG?
Excellent detailed video
I had my rotors and pads replaced last year ,and now the fronts squeak bad ,im guessing the rotors since they feel all bumpy ,pads have plenty of life for sure on my 2004 s55 w220
you dont have to unplug the SBC pump. just jack the car up and dont touch the door handles while servicing the brakes.
I'd rather take 20 seconds to unplug it than have my fingers sliced off from the pistons if the SBC decides to turn on (:
beautiful car and good video information. Question: what is the reason that the SBC connector must be disconnected?
Thanks for the great videos !!! :)))
It is disconnected incase the door is opened or the car is unlocked accidentally during the service. These things cause the SBC pump to run and this will damage the caliper pistons or crush your fingers when you have the caliper removed or are replacing the pads.
well I just purchased a 05 e55 I'm glad I ran across this lol uncomplicate the 1st time...... my question is this there's no pistons in the calipers? so there no need to bleed the system after removal of the pads an calipers? from what I seen no but hey I'd like to ask still
8 pistons in the caliper, so you still have to bleed to get old fluid out. My brakes were just bled and fluid was changed before I got the car so I'm not in a rush to do it again. You need to find someone with STAR computer to do it I believe.
AMGmeister dam..... But in order to slide the new pads in you didn't have to push the pistons in then bleed them to push the pistons against the pad like typical breaks?
With the SBC brakes in this car it is easy to push the pistons to fit the new pads in - unlike a traditional brakes with a brake booster. Once you start up the car it will squeeze the pads to the rotor itself.
AMGmeister well that's awesome thanks for the info it's good 2 know
AMGmeister Does my 2007 e63 amg have sbc? I'm considering changing my front brakes and rotors.
Hey did you reuse the caliper bolts? I heard they are one time use..
I'm guessing the rears are identical -1 set of pads each
Thought it was going to be a piece of cake. My caliper bolts are super hard to get off. One is stuck.
Hit it with WD-40 and a long breaker bar and it should come off.
Thanks i'll try that
I had the same problem. It was a monster b*tch. I didn't have a lift so I couldn't get full access. Anyway, if you dare, disconnect the spindle from the upper control arm and the wheel assemlby falls forward to you and allows you access to the caliper bolts. They usually have a ton of lock tite making removal without a lift a major head ache. Regardless, I used a propane torch for a few minutes and then ice water and then a huge breaker bar and it broke them open. Wasn't easy but you can do it.
Yeah mine broke nearly everything i own lol
well done video! thanks
Unfortunately by using your SBC disconnect method you are not going to tell your SBC unit that you have done a brake job. Amongst other things the procedure will tell the SBC that you are using new brake pads and/or rotors again and the SBC knows how to handle this information for various situations.
Other than that another great video.
Why didnt you replace the hardware? pins and springs.. since they only cost a few bucks i tend to replace them every time i service my brakes.
Nohuuuhuuuh true
Good Job! A questions what was the costs ?
Nice video. With the SBC unhooked can I then flush my brake system or do I need a compatible scanner to do that? Thanks, Tom
great video, thank you. I have a 2010 e63 amg. you have any tips before i do the front brakes?
Thanks! It should be easier for you since you don't have to worry about any of the SBC stuff.
Nice video! How or what tool did you use to measure those 120 and 60 degree turns after the bolt was torqued to spec? Thanks.
Hello. Which is better rotors Meyle, Zimmerman, Brembo???? 🙏🏻
Caliper Bolts are ONE TIME USE ONLY!!!!! They come with Locktite installed. I would not want these bolts to come off while driving! Look in WIS
If you are just changing pads do you just remove the pin thats holding it in place?
Is it imperative to change the sensor every time you service the brakes?
SUPERB!!!!!
I did this and now the brake light won't turn off please help!
Just one question if anyone knows...are the brake wear sensors the same on the rear and front ?
I have 2009 E-350 with sport package. Do my car has SBC? Do I need to worry about SBC?
and would it be the same brake shoes?
Where did you get that flat screw driver?
Are front and rear pads the same?
i have an 2007 e63 amg. will these rotors fit my car?
No. The E63 has 2 piece rotors.
well done
This is driving me nuts - I have this music, but I can’t remember who did it: Cocteau Twins? Flaming Lips?
soundcloud.com/stevendeblat/is-this-much-for-u :)
I followed the video to the letter on my C55 AMG. When I started the car I now have an ESP display malfunction and ABS display malfunction. ABS light is on in the dash and the car won’t come out of park. I called Mercedes and they didn’t know why you would unplug the SBC module.
HELP!!!
The C55 does not have an SBC module. I assume you disconnected the ABS module instead which might be causing the problems. Double check the connection. If you did brakes on a C55 you would not need to disconnect anything anyways. This video is for E55/S55/CL55 etc as I say in the description. I hope you are able to resolve the issue.
AMGmeister thanks for the reply. I was not able to resolve. Was able to trip the shifter bypass. But ultimately had to have it towed to the shop. Also the car wouldn’t shift out of first gear, and the speedo stoped working. Any thoughts as to to why?
C55 and CLK55 6 piston brembo caliper bracket bolts torque is 115 Nm. Don't use 180 Nm.
is this the same for a 09 C63 AMG?
Thanks for the vid. Will give this a crack soon. Interesting to see you have over 100k views on this video. Must be a lot of diy AMG owners out there…
If rotors are still fine can you get away with a pad slap
Best video!
great diy! is there any specific precautions to take with the parking brake when doing the rears? also you didn't mention the SBC activation procedure, is this not essential? (@ 7:25 in this vid: ua-cam.com/video/J8jaVufCQcg/v-deo.html
You do not need to bleed the air out of brake line???
Why would you need to do that? You don't even need to do that on conventional brakes. All your doing is pushing the fluid back up into the reservoir when pressing the pads away from the rotor.
While you are there and you already got some old fluid out, why not just crack the bleeder and let much of the old fluid out then top off again. It gets rid of any fluid that may have moisture.
Besides MB service says to flush brake fluid regularly. On my ‘01 my calipers lasted as long as I owned the car no issues and the fluid was always clear and clean
can this rotors and brake pads be fitted on Sl55 2004?
where can I check the compatibility
Eyas KD yes, this would work. You can double check by putting in your car on a website like FCP euro and it will show if it fits or not.
@@AMGmeister Thank you,
Do you think its worth it to have the genuine rotors and pads from MB or this will do the same job? there is a big price difference , and this price difference is for something, please correct me if I'm wrong
5:57 Bimbo brakes look good.
good vid, but the "brake quiet" (orange goop on pad backings) is kinda pointless in my experience. cheap insurance for a non-existant issue I guess.
Yep only grease aluminium parts just where the pads slide in and out when braking and very little please and use org MERCEDES IS water resistant made for the purpose + u don't want glue backside when u let go of the brake u want them to me go of the pistons right
@All Does my 2009 E350 4Matic Sedan have a SBC pump? So that when I replace the Brakes(Brembo) & Rotors(Brembo), I know to disconnect the pump
Inte8ranD no it does not have sbc
No, SBC in 2009 is the keyword to say that you don’t have SBC.
Would you recommend the same procedure for a W209 CLK 55?
Very similar ,but clk55 has 6 piston front calipers ,with two pads ,not four.
No SBC to worry about ...Unbolt the caliper from the bracket with 10mm hex bit ,,re ,fit with 110Nm.
I'm trying to purchase some pads and rotors any advice on a site the has decent prices?
Check out fcpeuro.com - They have Zimmerman rotors which are the best quality. If you want a lower price but still good quality you can get Meyle rotors on eBay. You can get Akebono pads pretty much anywhere. Hope this helps.
@@AMGmeister I looked on there but I couldn't find rotors with AMG package

you do not need to disconnect the SBC unit. simply lock the doors and dont touch the handles until the work is done.
Hey are these rotors the same as the s55 2003??
The rotors are slightly different for the E55 compared to the S55. The S55 has the same brakes CL55.
Will the EUR984 Pads work on a 2005 E55?
Yes, those are the correct pads for the rear brakes on the E55.
I am just going to order a pair for my E55. Question is, what are your reviews on these pads? In terms of dust and durability I've heard they are great. But how is the performance (say braking from 100 km/h to a standstill). Are they as good as the OEM or better/worse?
And how is akebono compared to Zimmerman pads?
Thanx for great video
Arian
Great tutorial, but he’s tightening the calliper bolts way too much.
He says 180nm, but most people online are saying 115nm. I went with 180nm and snapped the bolt. Mercedes recommend replacing this bolt with each rotor change. Technically the bolts are 10.9 grade so you can,
electronicfilters.tpub.com/TM-10-4330-237-13P/css/TM-10-4330-237-13P_105.htm
but this didn’t work out so well for me)
if you keep it to 115nm you can use the existing bolt. (180nm felt extremely excessive with 4 x1/2 rotations using full force before the snap)
180nm is from the Mercedes workshop manual. Using new bolts is advisable.
Thats it? And the mechanics charge triple the price for an AMG, its just a extra pin that needs to be pushed out.
thanks men i love u
jokemoke241 your reply sounds gay
I'd rather use AMG original parts and let the AMG center change everything, cus I'm a car idiot and I want all my work done on the car documented through MB. Hence why I set myself back about about $14000 on service and other maintenance work and parts. Keyword: Stupid :)
well done video AMGmeister! My daily driven 06 E55 AMG is up to 150,000 miles now. I've logged 75,000 miles in only 2 years ownership. In this time I have replaced the brake pads & rotors, one front air shock, and the SC double idler pulley. Thats it other than fluids and filters. Excellent automobile.
samspace81 do you still have the original rear air shocks? Any leaks or problems there?
MRBADASS yes and no no problems
I'm back to do this again! 226,000 miles now!
@@samspace81 Legend!
Brilliant! At that rate you must be on 300,000 by now?
Use this video today to change the pads and rotors on my CLS 55 AMG. Thanks for posting, it was very helpful.
do a video for the rears to
Yeah mate, great videos! So detailed which is useful for those less mechanically inclined. Very helpful :)
Professional looks different. You don’t just pull the calipers back. You use a reset tool. He risks that the calipers might cant. Also you don’t wanna disconnect the SBC. Do it right via Star Diagnosis or other tool that can do it properly. You’re not replacing a lightbulb here, you work on everyone’s life insurance (called brakes)! Other than that good video.
I understand that this comment is 3 years old but you need to understand that not everyone has the resources to have a STAR Diagnostic Tool casually lying around at home, and sometimes doing things yourself can save you some cash.
Did I see correctly that the SBC pump was disconnected? is it possible to do it without SD computer?
Great video. Thank you for posting. Are you required to change the rotors each time you change the pads?
No.
Solid guide but that is WAY too much threadlocker! A dab will do it.
Where does one get the metal backing plate that holds the pads in? I need replacements but can't find them anywhere. I can locate the mounting pins that hold the pads in the calipers but not the rear facing metal brackets that the pins go through.
Dude this is the most perfect video tutorial we've ever seen.
I'm supposed to do the front rotors + pads on a 2008 E63 w211.
Is the job similar?
Thanks!
How did you feel about the Meyle rotors vs the oem? Did they perform as well?
I had a bit of a nightmare with this, rears were done in a few hours - but when it came to the fronts, it was a bit of a saga:
First of all I couldn’t get the pins out and they were totally seized. So I ended up sending them to a calliper specialist who themselves had to wire erode them out along with the pad slider plates allen head button screws - the calliper behind these plates was totally corroded to the point where the pads were jammed in and had to be levered out.
While they were away removing the discs involved cutting off the calliper retention bolts so the discs went in the bin, and then one of the brake hoses was split so had to be replaced.
The new Brembo pads I bought just wouldn’t fit, so I had to get some Pagid pads on the day which were a bit more expensive than my usual source.
One of the dust shields also had detached itself so I ended up doing this too, the part was very expensive…
Needless to say everything when back with plenty of grease - choices where appropriate.
So since the brake callipers were off I was set to bleed the brakes and not having star, I had to do this solely with a pressure bleeder - which is possible, I was due a change anyway and I did it twice with a drive in between to bed in the new pads to flush as much as possible from within the SBC pump.
Yay; life working on cars. 😒🤬😅
Hi @AMGmeister, I have a doubt, would this be the same on a 2009 W211 E280 model? Or is it different? Great DIY video btw.
And why did Mercedes want to charge me $8 K for this on my E63 ?
Because OEM Parts. That's why.
Why are you taking your car to the dealership?
Does this DYI apply to the E63? I am curios whether the process for removing the calipers are the same or not.
I don't have a Mercedes yet. But I really like to watch your detailed videos.
Is there a sensor on both sides in the front? Do you have to reset the sensor with a scan tool? How good are the akrbono pads? Do they produce alot of dust?
Great video as always amgmeister! Question: I want to do the rear brakes and rotors. What are the part numbers for the akebono pads and meyle rotors for the rears? Thanks
Do you what I need to go from the factory solid rear rotors to vented ones ?on a w211 e500
After doing this my car is saying abs and esp malfunction. Help!!
I have 04 S500 can I put the calipers from a 04 CL55 amg?
I am confused with finding wear sensors for the front, I have some ebay sellers telling me they are the same for left and right, but by looking at your video one is dark grey where the other is not.
I was just following this. Mercedes does provide different parts for driver and passenger side. The head size of the sensor pin is different for the passenger and driver side. I have not tried using the same one for both sides - it might not fit. www.ecstuning.com/Mercedes_Benz-2004-E55_AMG-211.076-Base-Sedan-V8_5.5L/Braking/Sensors/
Are the wearing indicators required on both wheels?
