I had a "French drain" installed in my yard several years ago to help with the drainage issues. It stopped water from going into my cellar (house built in 1900) and pooling on my sidewalk. It works really well, you won't be sorry for doing it, yeah it's not a fun project but sometimes we have to do what we have to do besides planting. Good luck.

Loved visiting garden centers this morning ☕️…as it’s freezing rain/sleeting outside here 😭
Love the idea of a formal look for your secret garden. I’d like to do that in my side yard. Feels less intimidating to upkeep the “formalness” in a smaller space. Looking forward to watching you develop that area.

I have used blocks or stakes to surround the base of a top heavy planter to keep it from falling during our windy storms. Might be something you could put on the spiral topiary so it won't fall again.

I had a thought: What if instead of running that water off to the street and the drainage ditch, what if you split it and send it with perforated pipes and two pop-up heads coming out of the ground (they are green) and give that extra water to your lemon tree and the other tree nearer the fence?? Free water is always a good thing!! You're going to dig anyway, so why not save the water for your trees. Oh, and did you know you can freeze those lemons and make lemonade in the summer? My MIL did that at her Rancho Cordova house and the small lemon tree splitting her property and the neighbor's. Have a great week and happy planting!!!

Additional garden art on the office front, fence, and in the planting area will enhance your garden. The Garden Man looks wonderful on the fence. I love that color of the Garden Man. Having metal sun/moon wall art on the fence areas and on the front of the office are ideas. You can paint the metal art the colors you want that will complement your garden/taste.
I'm anxious to see your garden thru out this growing season and beyond. HAPPY GARDENING!

How much would it cost to remove the asphalt -- could you take it out gradually, but where it's especially problematic first?

If you plan to change the fence, you probably should try to make the wire panels stand on their own, without support from the fence.

In terms of order of priority, would it make sense to get rid of the driveway area that you don’t need sooner? I know you’ve mentioned it’s expensive, but it could help with your drainage issues and it would help in the overall design. Maybe worth putting other things on pause until that can be done? Either way, looks great!

You want the water to be absorbed into the ground and not be drained away. To allow that you need to decrease the amount of asphalt in your front yard so the water can be absorbed. The whole amount the water that lands on the asphalt is trying to be absorbed along its edge.

I’m SURE it’s just me, I would be more concerned about puddling water if it stayed a puddle. IF I were as dry as you are I MIGHT want the water to STAY on my property UNLESS it NEVER soaked in ? I BELIEVE there are other ways to stop the rain from destroying your flower beds but again THATS JUST MY THINKING. I BELIEVE Jim Putnum also has the same thoughts on trying to keep water ON YOUR property unless it’s forming a standing water puddle that never leaves. Of course if it’s destroying your home in anyway way it should be diverted . JUST MY THOUGHTS ! ! And please take it with a grain of salt ? ❄️⛄️💚🙃
