- Dave Moltrup is the most amazing steel mill modeler I have ever had the pleasure to meet. His HO scale layout depicts with incredible detail and accuracy multiple steel mill activity and railroad operations specifically tailored to serve them. The layout is so intense it took 2 videos to cover all of his operations. Part 1 introduces us to Dave as he explains the layout and gives us detailed explanations of what is going on in each area. Part 2 will cover even more mills and manufacturing areas depicted on this fabulous layout not shown in part 1.
I worked with Dave in a previous life as professional firefighters. I saw his attention to detail throughout his career, so it’s no surprise. It carries over to a hobby, which is dear to his heart.
This is miraculous. My great grandfather and many other Slovak relatives worked at Youngstown Steel and Tube after immigrating here from Eastern Europe. It's so sad to think that very few if any young people today would have any interest whatsoever in viewing and appreciating this incredible model. The mid-west steel mills were responsible for so much of our nation's history.
In my opinion, this exhibit is worthy of permanent display space in the Smithsonian Institution.
This is fantastic but reminds me why I shouldn't model steel mills! What an intense industry! So neat, great modeling.
Great Tour of the layout. Great Details. Thanks.
I had a co-worker who worked in Ambridge (American Bridge Co.) PA in 1950. At the time, they were making Bailey Bridges for shipment overseas. He told of times at night when Jones & Loughlin (sp?) would be pouring molten steel and how it was so bright that you could read the newspaper on your front porch across the river from it. What a fantastic rendition of this legacy industry you've created there!
I see our PTF DESIGNS Blast furnace backdrop building flat with all the LEDs @ 1:16 ! I’m honored to have one of our products on this absolutely fantastic layout!! Blown away! Thanks for sharing! - Nick-

Dave's model layout(s) are things of technical beauty. A recent historic record of the steel industry in and around the Pennslyvania area.
I am beyond blown away! One of the most original and amazing layouts I’ve ever seen!
thanks so much I agree!
Thanks I felt the same way
Absolutely amazing the great detail 👍
Man, what an incredible display of master craftmanship. Stunning. Thanks for sharing.
thank you!
I am a ferrous metallurgist from Pitt and his processing knowledge is spot on. Amazing.
Holy crap this is amazing. The detail alone without any trains running is impressive enough, the rest just puts this through the stratosphere. Great work!
Thanks more to come on this layout toward the end of the week.please consider subscribing and liking the videos
Amazing! You can tell a lot of time and dedication to detail went into this layout. Thanks for sharing.
Magnificent. I love the industrial scene. The various types of railroad cars are especially impressive and interesting
Awesome! Glad you guys could put together a video tour, thanks!
Really enjoyed this one...gotta love those steel mills.
Thank you I do as well !
This is amazing, thanks for sharing.
Awesome. One of the best I’ve seen.
The details and explanation of steel making is excellent and enjoyable.
Thanks Ted
That is just amazing. Unbelievable
WOW this is amazing ..
Stunning detail and build.
I built the Walthers Blast furnace but realised the structure was too huge to fit on my layout and I sold it on...
Thank you for sharing.👍
Dave….. AWESOME Layout 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Absolutely MAGNIFICENT
I had the pleasure of working with the late Paul Schneider in filming the Kalmbach video about steel mills and railroading and the realism in your models transported me back to our tours. It was always the sheer size and accompanying sounds and smells that just made everything almost surreal. Bless you for your skills time and patience to capture an essential industry
thank you for great video
FROM AUSTRALIA
Thanks!
My absolute favorite part of this video was early on when he said while talking about the steel mill, he pointed to a little sign on the crane and stated, "My wife made that for me!" How cute.
I could melt. Where are these kind of women?
I can only hope to have anything of this magnitude and quality. Maybe one day.
Beautiful Steel Mill .
Amazing modeling.
Congratulations mate, your layout is amazing!
Mind Blowing!! What a work of Art!!
Thank you I thought so as well!
Amazing.
In the photo of Beaver Falls PA towards the end of the video. THE Dam that was shown, still has the causeway at the west side, where they still produce electricity. I want there in 2019 to inspect their overhead cranes. The stone in the causeway has carvings from the early 1800s . Beaver falls is a cool city
wow, amazing
Wow, this is just thoroughly incredible! 😯There are so many hour of work in all that. Great video 👍
Thank you so much
Love that GSP
Amazing!
We will be doing more with Dave soon!
Outrageous. You’ve gotta be quite mad to do this. This guy is my kind of mad. Just love this madness. I have no words 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼Thanks a million for sharing this masterpiece ❤️🙏🏼
I could be wrong but on the top of the cold roll mill there are 3 roof vents. They look like the bottoms of some old painters polls cut off that I've had years ago. If that is what they are that's genius, love seeing all the hand built structures.
😮 I'm blown away so awesome thanks for sharing this with us I subscribed
Fantastic, and one of the best industrial themed layouts I've seen. Dave's commentary was brilliant however I wish all those guys weren't chattering in the background.
The way this guy was talking, he had me convinced he was actually producing steel and I almost believed it. What an incredible piece of craftsmanship.
Lol
Amazing detail!
Interactive art. 👍
21:55 wonderfull site! My father used to work for Hoogovens Royal Dutch Steel & Iron Company, later Corus, Hoesch and now Tara Steel. I like to rebuild some simplified parts of the plant due to lack of space in HO scale in a medium size sleepingroom. I have a GM shunter and a lot of Shimmns(coils) for transport to the customer.
I operated Frytags layout a few times. Huge thing.
Love your layout, (and your dog)! I grew up in Youngstown, I was born around the same time as Gateway Yard. Where in the heck did you find that Bliss roller, Pollock cars and SOHIO truck? You are an incredible craftsman, and it is fascinating how you know everything about this mill. Regarding the "flare", when we were kids, dad would drive by the Campbell Works at night, and mom would always point out the "cigar lighter", (her name for the flare). Can't believe Walthers has a Hulett kit, amazing. Beaver Falls is a great town, home of Donny Iris. Your knowledge of steel making is amazing, enjoyed the video, thanks.
Wow❤
Beavers Falls is also the hometown of Joe Willie Namath, SuperBowl winning quarterback of the New York Jets.
Dean Freytag would have loved this. Wow!
Dean and Dave were close friends. More to come on this layout
@@alpugliesetrains9753 I was lucky enough to meet Dean years ago. He signed my copy of his book and even gave me a Davies Steel coil car. I still have it in my collection today.
This puts how huge an industry steel was at one time in perspective . The steel rails for the trans Siberian railroad most likely came from these plants
Man I would have to organize that wall! 😂😂😂😂
Beaver falls ❤
0:10 Thats some busy pegboard.
I was hoping to see maybe one train moving, maybe next time
the daughter of the designer of the hewlitts lived in cape may, nj, her son was a friend of mine.
Hey I'm in Koppel
. So close ...
You ought to see Ken McCrory's layout and steel mill. Roughly 30 x 70 ft.
let us know were it is located and perhaps any open house info as I am always looking for great model railroads for the channel.
@@alpugliesetrains9753 Ken's layout is in Downingtown, PA. 395 Font Road. There are several videos of his layout on UA-cam. It takes up the second floor of a large barn. Ken has a full sized SD45 cab simulator on the first floor.
An awesome layout! I only wish I had the money, space and most of all, the know-how, to accomplish a project like this! I did get a chuckle when I saw that Sohio Gasoline truck sitting near those hot bottle and slag cars. In real life could be a BOOM!😂😂 Just kidding.
Nicely done Dave !!! Just a suggestion try to keep the background conversations quiet when filming. Makes it harder to understand Dave at times.
Thanks Ken for watching . Sorry about the background noise.
Overwhelming.....
Did you include a Diner that serves meatloaf?
dude looks like john goodman
Looks like giant people
Tara = Tata Steel
He must of worked in a steel mill
That's about right the only industry the U.S has are shown in models these days and thanks to Brandon no longer exist.
Such a shame that someone is talking in the background
